  • Beam - and arch-like structures are two-dimensional bodies characterized by the fact of small thickness compared to the length of structures. Owing to this geometric feature, linear displacement approximations through the thickness such as Kirchhoff and Reissner-Mindlin theories which are more accessible one dimensional problems have been used. However, for accurate analysis of the behavior in the regions where the state of stresses is complex, two-dimensional linear elasicity or relatively high order of thickness polynomials is required. This paper analyses accuracy according to the order of thickness polynomials and introduces a technique for model combination for which several different polynomial orders are mixed in a single structure.

  • Ground pork was packaged(purged) with modified atmosphere (n$_2$ and CO$_2$) and irradiated with the electron beam in order to find out whether modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) inhibit the microbial growth and lipid oxidation development caused by electron beam irradiation. After packaging and irradiation, ground pork was stored at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 6 days and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 3 months, and periodically the microbial counts and the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) for the determination of lipid oxidation were measured. The inhibition of growth of total aerobic bacteria and mesophiles was confirmed when the ground pork was irradiated with the electron beam dose of 1.5 and 3.0 kGy. The N$_2$ or CO$_2$ purging alone was also effective in reducing the development of lipid oxidation of ground pork during storage at 4 and -15$^{\circ}C$. The combination of electron beam irradiation(1.5 and 3.0 kGy) with MAP (N$_2$ or CO$_2$) was effective to inhibit the growth of total aerobic bacteria and mesophiles, and retard the lipid oxidation of ground pork during storage at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 6 days and -15$^{\circ}C$ for 3 months.

  • In this paper, we presented the development results of high speed wavefront sensor which is used in diagnosing the beam quality of He-Ne laser for adaptive optics system. The beam quality information of laser in AO system is necessarily required for diagnosing the optical components or correcting the distorted wavefront afterward. According to system requirements, normally, it is requested that there are high precision of measurement and real time processing speed. The developed wavefront sensor in this paper achieved maximum 30Hz of measurement rate and ${\lambda}/20(\;{@}\;{\lambda}=0.6328{\mu}m)$ of measurement precision in RMS. We also applied the developed into an experimental adaptive system and verified the performance of it by correcting the aberrated wavefront with a rate of 30Hz and $\lambda$/20 precision using the combination of the developed and PID control algorithm.

  • In the welding for the steel structure of H-beam with mild steel and 490N/$\textrm{mm}^2$ high tensile steel, we applied the fillet weld mostly and 6-8mm weld length(AISC-spec.). And a new developed metal-cored-wire is used in automatic welding as well as semi-automatic welding. In this study we have attempted to raise the welding productivity and to stabilize the quality on horizontal positions of fillet welding with the following items: - We improved the weld productivity using metal based cored wire with a high deposition rate in the steel structure of H-beam. - We tested the weldability and evaluated the quality of the weldmetal by horizontal fillet $CO_2$ welding. The process is carried out in combination with a special purpose metal-based FCW with excellent resistance to porosity and high welding speed. - We studied the micro structure of the weldmetal by the various welding conditions. - We studied the effect of welding residual stress by the welding conditions in T-joint. Therefore, it can be assured that more productive and superior quality of the weldmetal can be taken from this study results.

  • This paper dealt with the condensing technology of an LED light source that uses a parabolic reflector to replace a searchlight equipped with a xenon lamp. A ray-tracing simulation was conducted to analyze the influence of the diameter of the reflector and the size of the light source on light condensing. The combination of a parabolic reflector with a diameter of 620 mm and a focal distance of 220 mm, and a 9 mm multi-chip package (MCP) with a luminous flux of 7,000 lm showed the narrowest beam angle. The luminous intensity at the center was measured at 7.7×106 cd. The distance between the light source and the point where the illuminance was 1 lx was calculated to be 2.8 km. The power consumption of the system was 95 W, which is only 9.5% of that of the 1 kW xenon searchlight, and the beam angle was 1.03°. In a site experiment, it was confirmed that the light ray reflected from the LED searchlight proceeds forward without any diffusion because of the narrow beam angle.

  • A study was carried out to fabricate the cutting tool geometry with micro/nanoscale on the single crystal diamond tool by using the FIB. The FIB technique is an ideal tool for TEM sample preparation that allows for the fabrication of electron-transparent foils. The FIB is appropriate techniques to sample and subsequently define the chemical composition and the structural state of mineral inclusion on the micro/nanoscale. The combination of FIB with a SEM allows for 3D information to be obtained from samples including 3D imaging. Cutting strategies were demonstrated to improve the performance of cutting tool geometry and to generate high aspect ratio micro cutting tool. A finely focused beam of 30keV Ga+ ions was used to mill cutting tool shapes for various micro patterns. Therefore FIB sputtering is used to shape a variety of cutting tools with dimensions in the $1-5{\mu}m$ range and cutting edge radii of curvature of under 50nm.

  • Woolyang(月梁) is a beam which whole shape is curved like a so-called moon(月). According to the ${\ll}$Yeongjobeosig(營造法式)${\gg}$, In the case of beams installed under the ceiling of a wooden building, it is used by manufacturing them in Woolyang(月梁) for maximum visual decorative effects as the shape is exposed. In order to achieve the end of a beam that is manufacturing in Woolyang(月梁), it is important to process it in a suitable size and shape for a given situation to achieve a combination with other members around it. However, in the "營造法式", the standard of production of the Woolyang(月梁) is divided into Myeongbog(明?), Chagyeon(箚牽), Pyeonglyang(平梁), and the height of each beam head is divided into 21分$^{\circ}$, 15分$^{\circ}$, 25分$^{\circ}$, but it is not possible to look at any more specific reference. In this paper, try to consider the principle of Woolyang(月梁) manufacturing and its normative contents which were indirectly proposed in the ${\ll}$Yeongjobeosig(營造法式)${\gg}$.

  • The seismic performance of a coupled shear wall system is governed by the shear resistances of its coupling beams. The plate-reinforced composite (PRC) coupling beam is a newly developed form of coupling beam that exhibits high deformation and energy dissipation capacities. In this study, the shear capacity of plate-reinforced composite coupling beams was investigated. The shear strengths of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios were calculated using a softened strut-and-tie model. In addition, a shear mechanical model and calculating method were established in combination with a multi-strip model. Furthermore, a simplified formula was proposed to calculate the shear strengths of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios. An analytical model was proposed based on the force mechanism of the composite coupling beam and was proven to exhibit adequate accuracy when compared with the available test results. The comparative results indicated that the new shear model exhibited more reasonable assessment accuracy and higher reliability. This method included a definite mechanical model and reasonably reflected the failure mechanisms of PRC coupling beams with low span-to-depth ratios not exceeding 2.5.

  • A correction method of reflectivity in partial beam blockage (PBB) area is suggested, which is based on the combination of digital terrain information and self-consistency principle between polarimetric observation. First, the reflectivity was corrected by adding the radar energy loss estimated from beam blockage simulation using digital elevation model (DEM) and beam propagation geometry in standard atmosphere. The additional energy loss by unexpected obstacles and non-standard beam propagation was estimated by using the coefficient between accumulated reflectivity ($Z_H$) and differences of differential phase shift (${\Phi}_{DP}$) along radial direction. The proposed method was applied to operational S-band dual-polarization radar at Jindo and its performance was compared with those of simulation method and self-consistency method for six rainfall cases. When the accumulated reflectivity and increment of ${\Phi}_{DP}$ along radial direction are too small, the self-consistency method has failed to correct the reflectivity while the combined method has corrected the reflectivity bias reasonably. The correction based on beam simulation showed the underestimation. For evaluation of rainfall estimation, the FBs (FRMSEs) of simulation method and self-consistency principle were -0.32 (0.59) and -0.30 (0.57), respectively. The proposed method showed the lowest FB (-0.24) and FRMSE (0.50). The FB and FMSE were improved by about 18% and by 19% in comparison to those before correction (-0.42 and 0.70). We can conclude that the proposed method can improve the accuracy of rainfall estimation in PBB area.

  • In standard finite element algorithms, the local stability conditions are not accounted for in the formulation of the tangent stiffness matrix. As a result, the loss of the local stability is not adequately related to the onset of the global instability. The phenomenon typically arises with material-type localizations, such as shear bands and plastic hinges. This paper addresses the problem in the context of the planar, finite-strain, rate-independent, materially non-linear beam theory, although the proposed technology is in principle not limited to beam structures. A weak formulation of Reissner's finite-strain beam theory is first presented, where the pseudocurvature of the deformed axis is the only unknown function. We further derive the local stability conditions for the large deformation case, and suggest various possible combinations of the interpolation and numerical integration schemes that trigger the simultaneous loss of the local and global instabilities of a statically determined beam. For practical applications, we advice on a procedure that uses a special numerical integration rule, where interpolation nodes and integration points are equal in number, but not in locations, except for the point of the local instability, where the interpolation node and the integration point coalesce. Provided that the point of instability is an end-point of the beam-a condition often met in engineering practice-the procedure simplifies substantially; one of such algorithms uses the combination of the Lagrangian interpolation and Lobatto's integration. The present paper uses the Galerkin finite element discretization, but a conceptually similar technology could be extended to other discretization methods.
