  • An experimental study on the NOx formation of LNG flame in fuel staged combustor has been studied. The design concept of multi fuel/air staged combustor is creation of two separate flame, a primary flame is a act as a pilot flame for the secondary combustion stage combustion zone, where most of fuel bums. Experiments were performed on a semi-industrial scale (thermal input 0.233 MW) in a laboratory furnace and Liquefied Natural Gas(LNG) was used as a primary and secondary fuels. This study included parametric study to identify the optimum operating conditions which are primary/secondary fuel ratio, and primary/secondary air ratio for reducing NOx emission with two types of nozzle. The test demonstrated that NOx emission can be reduced by >70% in accordance with operating conditions.

  • The relationship among the flame radiation, NOx emissions, residence time, and global strain rate are examined for turbulent non-premixed jet flames with wide variations in coaxial air conditions. Measurements of NOx emission, flame geometry and flame radiation were made to explain the NOx emission scaling based on global parameters such as flame residence time, global strain rate, and radiant fraction. The overall 1/2-power scaling is observed in coaxial air flames, irrespective of coaxial air conditions, but the degree of deviation from the l/2-slope curve in each case differs from one another. From the comparison between the results of pure hydrogen flames and those of helium diluted hydrogen flames, it is observed that flame radiation plays a significant role in pure hydrogen flames with coaxial air and the deviation from 1/2-power scaling may be explained in two reasons: the difference in the flame radiation and the difference in jet similarity in coaxial air flames. From the radiation measurements, more detailed explanations on these deviations were suggested.

  • Using lobed burner, flame visualization and measurements of NOx and CO concentration in the combustor exit were carried out to evaluate the relation between the lobed structure in a burner and pollutant emission characteristics. The flame stability is enhanced by the lobed burner compared to conventional circular one. The correlation on fuel discharge velocity for flame blowout should be included on a variable related to the wall effect of the burner, because the flame blowout is observed at the burner having large perimeter. The burner having lobed structure in fuel discharge side compared to conventional burner reduces by 5% NOx emission due to lower flame intensity through flame elongation. Meanwhile the burner having lobed structure in air discharge side and both fuel and air discharge side increase the NOx emission.

  • This numerical study was to investigate the effect of $CO_2$ addition on the structures and NOx formation characteristics in $CH_4$ counterflow diffusion flame. The importance of radiation effect was identified and $CO_2$ addition effect was investigated in terms of thermal and chemical reaction effect. Also the causes of NOx reduction were clarified by separation method of each formation mechanisms. The results were as follows : The radiation effect was intensified by $CO_2$ addition. Thermal effect mainly contributed to the changes in flame structure and the amount of NO formation but the chemical reaction effect also cannot be neglected. The reduction of thermal NO was dominant with respect to reduction rate, but that of prompt NO was dominant with respect to total amount.

  • Self flue gas recirculation flow is an effective method for low NOx emission in the regenerative low NOx burner. The object of this study is to analyze the self flue gas recirculating flow by varying jet velocity of the combustion air. Fuel and air flow rates are fixed and combustion air jet nozzle diameters are 13, 6.5 and 5mm. The stoichiometric line is obtained from the concentration of the fuel using an acetone PLIF technique. It is found that the self flue gas recirculating flow is entrained into that line using a two color PIV technique. As the jet velocity of combustion air is increased, the flue gas entrainment rate into the stoichiometric line is increased. This result suggests that NOx emission can be reduced due to the effects of flue gas which is lowering the flame temperatures.

  • In this study, combustion characteristics for 20t/h water tube boilers are studied. The burner by applying The fuel staging technology, the air staging technology, the partially premixed technology, the separated flame technology and the flame inner recirculation technology was designed. This study was to determine the combustion characteristics for the three types of burners. It is found that the result of flame temperature measurement is less than $1300^{\circ}C$ at the all flame region. also, emissions of NOx and CO are found to be 15.8 ppm and 18.9 ppm, respectively.

  • To remove harmful gases from combustion exhaust gases. fundamental study on NOx removal using pulse corona discharge has been performed through experiments and simulations. The energy consumption should be decreased in order to apply non-thermal plasma technology to industry process. This work summarized the effects of $H_2O$ and Hydrocarbon additive in NOx removal efficiency. The Radical program is used to simulate high voltage discharge and the process of NOx removal. At last, experimental results were compared with simulation results to verify the reliability of this program.

  • The purpose of the study is carried out volume optimization of a combined system consisting of an LNT and SCR catalysts from the standpoint of its economic feasibility and de-NOx performance. Under the rich air-fuel ratio conditions for 5s (${\Phi}$=1.1), CO, $H_2$ and THC were generated at levels of 4%, 1.2% and $110ppmC_1$, respectively. The NOx conversion of the 1+1 combination was 5% lower than that of the 1.5+0.5 combination, however the reduced volume of the LNT catalyst decreased the total cost by about 6%. Therefore, the optimal volume ratio of the LNT and SCR catalysts was found to be the 1+1 catalyst combination, which has the highest total score in the terms of an economic feasibility and the NOx performance.
