An Uninterruptible Power Supply(UPS) is a system designed to deliver energy during accidents that the AC mains is out of its acceptable limits, without interruption of power flow through the load. Battery Discharger is the device to supply high quality power to the Inverter, when accidents occur, such as Power Failure. The Battery Discharger should have a fast response characteristics. The LLC resonant converter for UPS battery discharger is proposed. The proposed Battery Discharger offers substantial improvements in efficiency, size and cost. The proposed Battery Discharger of UPS approach is a good solution for high power applications above KW. To verify the validity of proposed Battery Discharger, simulations and experiments are carried out.

This paper presents a new lithium ion unit-cell and pack battery by using a new formulation ratio of material. The three types of formulation ratio for the unit-cell were used. The life cycle and basic properties of the lithium ion unit-cell$({\Psi}18{\times}65(mm))$ about one of them were acquired by the charge-discharge experiment. The nominal voltage, nominal capacity and cycle life output of the lithium ion unit-cell is respectively 3.7V, 2.4Ah, and above 500cycle. Pack type lithium ion battery has the size of $29.5{\times}73.5{\times}115(mm)$ and the weight of 300g. As the results, the weight and bulk of lithium ion battery used to a safety lamp were decreased to 1/4 and 1/7. In addition, the comparison of the new lithium ion battery and lead storge battery for confirming the effectiveness of the new lithium ion battery have been performed.
Recently portable mobile devices such as smart-phones and notebooks have rapidly increasing demands. Those devices consume more power because they are expected to offer more complex functionality including multimedia features. For these reasons engineering efforts are changing to focus on maximizing energy efficiency within a limited battery capacity instead of increasing computational performance. In this paper, we propose a battery management system using event driven programming technique on a embedded processor. We also show that the proposed system satisfies SBS (Smart Battery Specification) v1.1. The proposed system maintains minimum code size and memory size comparing to those of RTOSs. The proposed system can be also easily incorporated in the conventional RTOSs as a form of firmware.

This paper proposes a modularized charge equalization converter for hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) lithium-ion battery cells, in which the intra-module and the inter-module equalizer are Implemented. Considering the high voltage HEV battery pack, over approximately 300V, the proposed equalization circuit modularizes the entire $M^*N$ cells; in other words, M modules in the string and N cells in each module. With this modularization, low voltage stress on all the electronic devices, below roughly 64V, can be obtained. In the intra-module equalization, a current-fed DC/DC converter with cell selection switches is employed. By conducting these selection switches, concentrated charging of the specific under charged cells can be performed. On the other hand, the inter-module equalizer makes use of a voltage-fed DC/DC converter for bi-directional equalization. In the proposed circuit, these two converters can share the MOSFET switch so that low cost and small size can be achieved. In addition, the absence of any additional reset circuitry in the inter-module equalizer allows for further size reduction, concurrently conducting the multiple cell selection switches allows for shorter equalization time, and employing the optimal power rating design rule allows fur high power density to be obtained. Experimental results of an implemented prototype show that the proposed equalization scheme has the promised cell balancing performance for the 7Ah HEV lithium-ion battery string while maintaining low voltage stress, low cost, small size, and short equalization time.
Purpose: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is common in children, and button battery (BB) ingestion has been increasing in recent years. This study was to identify factors related to outcomes of FB ingestion, particularly BBs in the stomach. We evaluated whether the current recommendations are appropriate and aimed to suggest indications for endoscopic removal of BB in the stomach in young children. Methods: We investigated patient age, shape, size, location of FBs, spontaneous passage time and resulting complications among 76 children. We observed types, size, location of BB and outcomes, and analyzed their associations with complications. Results: Coins and BB were the two most common FBs. Their shapes and sizes were not associated with the spontaneous passage time. Size, spontaneous passage time, and age were also not associated with any specific complications. For BB ingestion, all 5 cases with lithium batteries (${\geq}1.5cm$, 3 V) presented moderate to major complications in the esophagus and stomach without any symptoms, even when the batteries were in the stomach and beyond the duodenum, while no complications were noted in 7 cases with alkaline batteries (<1.5 cm, 1.5 V) (p=0.001). All endoscopies were conducted within 24 hours after ingestion. Conclusion: The type and voltage of the battery should be considered when determining whether endoscopy is required to remove a BB in the stomach. For lithium battery ingestion in young children, urgent endoscopic removal might be important in order to prevent complications, even if the child is asymptomatic and the battery is smaller than 2 cm.
A protection integrated circuit which enables the stable operation of the rechargeable battery should be designed with a low-power architecture because it consumes the power of the battery. This paper proposed a low-power scheme especially when the several series-connected batteries are provided. By adopting a time sharing control of the batteries, the chip size and power consumption could be reduced.

Two-stage charge equalization scheme for HEV lithium-ion battery string is proposed with the optimal power rating design rule in this paper, where in the first stage the over charged energy of higher voltage cells is drawn out to the single common output capacitor and then, that discharged energy is recovered into the overall battery stack in the second stage. To achieve charge equalization of sort, the conventional flyback DC/DC converters of low power and minimized size are employed. The industrial sample employing both the proposed two-stage cell balancing scheme and the optimal power rating design rule shows good cell balancing performance with reduced size as well as low voltage stresses of the electronic devices.
This paper analyzes switching losses, efficiency and temperature depending on Si and SiC devices applied in two stage AC-DC converter. To evaluate the charge and discharge performance and stability of the battery pack, there is a need for a battery pack testing system. To do battery charge and discharge experiment used in battery pack test, A topology, two stage AC-DC converter, has been built. SiC devices more decrease switching losses than that of Si. Also, cooling system was applied in Si and SiC devices. When using SiC devices, it can be confirmed that the size of heat sink is reduced for small loss.

This paper focuses on the zero-voltage/zero current transition voltage equalization circuit for the series connected battery cell. By adding auxiliary resonant cells at the main switching devices such as MOSFET or IGBT, zero current switching is achieved and turned off loss of switching elements is eliminated and by the voltage/second balancing of the inductor, zero voltage switching can be applied to switching element. Transformer coupling between battery cells and ZVZCT (Zero Voltage Zero Current Transition) switching method allow the fast balancing speed and high frequency operation, which reduces the size and weight of the circuit. The validity of the battery equalization is further verified using simulation involving four lithium-ion battery cell models.
This paper presents an effective control scheme for an electric vehicle battery charger where a symmetrical bridgeless power factor-corrected converter and a buck converter are cascaded. Both converters have been popular in industries because of their high efficiency, low cost, and compact size, hence combining these converters makes the overall battery charging system strongly efficient. Moreover, this charger topology can operate at universal input voltage and attain a desired battery current and voltage without ripple. In order to achieve a unity input power factor and zero input current harmonic distortion, the proposed control scheme adopts duty ratio feed-forward control technique in both current and voltage control loop. Additionally, in the current loop, its reference is created by a phase-locked loop (PLL) block, leading to a pure sinusoidal input current although the input voltage waveform is being distorted. The feasibility and practical value of the proposed approach are verified by simulation and experiment with an 110V/60Hz ac line input and 1.5kW-72V dc output of the battery charging system.
