The bidirectional dc-dc converter, being the interface between Energy Storage Element (ESE) and DC bus, is an essential component of the power management system for vehicle applications including electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and fuel cell vehicle (FCV). In this paper, a novel multiphase bidirectional dc-dc converter interfacing with battery to supply and absorb the electric energy in the FCV system was studied with the help of real time digital simulator (RTDS). The mathematical models of fuel cell, battery and dc-dc converter were derived. A power management strategy was developed and first simulated in RTDS. A Power Hardware-In-the-Loop (PHIL) simulation using RTDS is then presented. The main challenge of this PHIL is the requirement for a highly dynamic bidirectional Simulation-Stimulation (Sim-Stim) interface. This paper describes three different interface algorithms. The closed-loop stability of the resulting PHIL system is analyzed in terms of time delay and sampling rate. A prototype bidirectional Sim-Stim interface is designed to implement the PHIL simulation.
In December 2017, the government announced plans to increase the current proportion of renewable energy from 7% to 20% by 2030 through a plan called the Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan. Therefore, the demand for installation of photovoltaic(PV), wind turbine(WT) and battery energy storage system(BESS) is expected to increase. In particular, the system combined with energy storage system(ESS) is expected to take up a large portion since PV and WT can receive high renewable energy certificates(REC) weights when combined with ESS. In this study, we calculate the optimal capacity of the power conditioning system(PCS) and the BESS by comparing the economical efficiency and maximize the efficiency of the PV-BESS system in which the PV and the BESS are connected. By analyzing the system marginal price(SMP) and REC, it maximize profits through application of REC weight 5.0 and optimal charge-discharge scheduling according to the SMP changes.
This paper proposes a fault tolerant and high efficiency operation algorithm for a 4 LEG DC/DC converter for a battery energy storage system(BESS) forming a main power source in a standalone DC micro grid. The BESS for the main power supply in the stand-alone DC micro-grid is required to operate at high speed according to fault tolerant control and load by operating at all times. Fault-tolerance control changes the short-circuit fault to an open-circuit fault by using a fuse in case of leg fault in 4 legs, and operates stably through phase shift control. In addition, considering the loss of the power semiconductor, the number of LEG operation is adjusted to operate at high efficiency in the full load region. In this paper, fault tolerant control and high efficiency operation algorithm of DC/DC converter for BESS in standalone DC micro grid is presented and it is proved through simulation and experiment.
Na-ion batteries are being considered as promising cost-effective energy storage devices for the future compared to Li-ion batteries owing to the crustal abundance of Na-ion. However, the large radius of the Na ion result in sluggish electrode kinetics that leads to poor electrochemical performance, which prohibits the use of these batteries in real time application. Therefore, identification and optimization of the anode, cathode, and electrolyte are essential for achieving high-performance Na-ion batteries. In this context, the current review discusses the suitable high-voltage cathode materials for Na-ion batteries. According to a recent research survey, sodium vanadium fluorophosphate (NVPF) compounds have been emphasized for use as a high-voltage Na-ion cathode material. Among the fluorophosphate groups, $Na_3V_2(PO_4)_2F_3$ exhibited the high theoretical capacity ($128mAh\;g^{-1}$) and working voltage (~3.9 V vs. $Na/Na^+$) compared to the other fluorophosphates and $Na_3V_2(PO_4)_3$. Here, we have also highlighted the classification of Fluorophosphates, NVPF composite with carbonaceous materials, the appropriate synthesis methods and how these methods can enhance the electrochemical performance. Finally, the recent developments in NVPF for the application in energy storage devices and its outlook are summarized.
Supercapacitors as novel energy storage devices between conventional capacitors and batteries, with more specific capacitance and energy densities than conventional capacitors and more power densities than batteries are to be used in many fields. And, social demand on fuel economy and reducing pollution needs equipment of new function such as energy storage system with good power performance, high cyclability and good energy efficiency. Supercapacitor is regarded as one of good alternatives for meeting the requirement of market with excellent power performance and high cyclability. This paper deals with the fundamental characteristics of supercapacitor unit and charge and discharge behavior of supercapacitor module for developing 42V hybrid energy storage system with lead acid battery and supercapacitor in order to adopt to 42V power net for vehicle.
This paper presents the circuit arrangement and effective control method of regenerative energy storage system for an electric vehicle using super-capacitors as the braking energy storage element. A bi-directional controlled current flow of the DC-DC converters with the capacitor bank is connected in parallel with battery, and is controlled so that the whole of the braking energy is effectively absorbed into the capacitors and released back to the electric motor upon acceleration. The converter needs the series-parallel switching circuit for making the best use of the series capacitors and for limiting the step-up ratio of the boost converter. The proposed methods are verified by computer simulation and experimental set-up. They are usefully applied to the electric vehicles such as green cars, electric motorcycles, bike, etc which are power- supplied by the electric batteries.
Current research and development efforts and other projects for energy storage systems (ESS) have recently been gaining attention. This is due to the many applications where ESS, particularly batteries, can be used. Among these are peak shaving, frequency regulation, and stabilization of renewable energy output. KEPCO has completed the construction and demonstration of a 4-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Jeju City to verify its practicability in the power grid. KEPCO Research Institute has also been developing technology for the commercialization of BESS, and has been conducting a trial run of a 52-MW ESS (28MW + 24MW of Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations) constructed in 2014 for frequency regulation. This paper discusses the development of operation methods, as well as an operation user interface, for the safe operation and monitoring of BESS used for frequency regulation in a power system. Included are operation and simulation methods for various normal and transient frequency situations that can be experienced by a power system. Also discussed are the results obtained after applying these methods to the 4-MW BESS and the 52-MW ESS, both used for frequency regulation. The technology in this paper will be applied to 500MW ESS for frequency regulation of KEPCO by 2017. It is expected that this technology helps a safe and reliable operation and control of ESS for frequency regulation through its continuous upgrade.
The purpose of this paper is to deduct components that are in the group of highest risk(top 10%). the group is conducted for classification into groups by values according to risk priority through risk priority number(RPN) of FMEA(Failure modes and effects analysis) sheet. Top 10% of failure mode among total potential failure modes(72 failure modes) of ESS included 5 BMS(battery included) failure modes, 1 invert failure mode, and 1 cable connectors failure mode in which BMS was highest. This is because ESS is connected to module, try, and lack in the battery part as an assembly of electronic information communication and is managed. BMS is mainly composed of the battery module and communication module. There is a junction box and numerous connectors that connect these two in which failure occurs most in the connector part and module itself. Finally, this paper proposes RPN by each step from the starting step of ESS design to installation and operation. Blackouts and electrical disasters can be prevented beforehand by managing and removing the deducted risk factors in prior.
The purpose of this paper is to conduct ETA on six items of ESS: the whole system, battery, BMS, PCS, ESS and cable. To achieve that, ESS work flow and its components are categorized. Based on performance, human, environmental, management, and safety, this paper drew initiation events (IE) and end states (ES). ETA is applied to the main functions of each item, and the end states that may occur in one initiation event are suggested. In addition, detailed classification was performed to induce various end states on the basis of the suggested initiation events ; loss of grid electricity of ESS, loss of battery electricity(DC) of battery, impairment of electric function of BMS, loss of grid electricity(AC) of PCS, loss of data of EMS, Mechanical damage of cable, event sequence analysis conducted on the basis of event trees. If the suggested IEs and ESs are applied on the basis of ESS event cases, it is expected to prevent the same kinds of accident and operate ESS safely.
