In this paper, we propose a rapid-charging system for the lithium-ion battery (LIB) packs used in electric forklifts. The battery offers three benefits: reduced charge time, prolonged battery life, and increased charging efficiency. A rapid-charging algorithm and DC/DC converter topology are proposed to achieve these benefits. This algorithm is developed using an electrochemical model, which controls the maximum charging current limit depending on the cell voltage and temperature. The experimental use of a selected 18650 LIB cell verified the prolongation of battery life on use of the algorithm. The proposed converter offers the same topological merits as a conventional resonant converter but solves the light-load regulation problem of conventional resonant converters by adopting pulse-width modulation. A 6.6-kW converter and charging algorithm were used with a forklift battery pack to verify this method's operational principles and advantages.

The conventional lead acid battery is optimized for cranking performance of engine. Recently electric devices and fuel economy technologies of battery have influenced more deep cycle of dynamic behavior of battery. I also causes to reduce battery life-time. This study proposed that aging battery model is focused for increasing of battery durability. The stress factors of battery aging consist of discharge rate, charging time, full charging time and temperature. This paper considers the electrochemical kinetics, the ionic species conservation, and electrode porosity. For prediction of battery life cycle we consider battery model containing strong impacts, corrosion of positive grid and shedding. Finally, we validated that modeling results were compared with the accelerated thermal measurement data.
For a battery module where single cells are connected in series, the single cells should each have a similar state of charge (SOC) to prevent them from being exposed to an overcharge or over-discharge during charge-discharge cycling. To detect the existence of unbalanced SOC cells in a battery module, we propose a simple measurement method using a single-frequency response of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). For a commercially available graphite/nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide lithium-ion cell, the cell impedance increases significantly below SOC20%, while the impedance in the medium SOC region (SOC20%-SOC80%) remains low with only minor changes. This impedance behavior is mostly due to the elementary processes of cathode reactions in the cell. Among the impedance values (Z, Z', Z"), the imaginary component of Z" regarding cathode reactions changes heavily as a function of SOC, in particular, when the EIS measurement is performed around 0.1 Hz. Thanks to the significant difference in the time constant of cathode reactions between ≤SOC10% and ≥SOC20%, a single-frequency EIS measurement enlarges the difference in impedance between balanced and unbalanced cells in the module and facilitates an ~80% improvement in the detection signal compared to results with conventional EIS measurements.

Lithium-ion batteries are used in many fields due to their high energy density, fast charging conditions, and long cycle life. However, overcharging, over-discharging, physical damage, and use of lithium-ion batteries at high temperatures can reduce battery life and cause damage to people due to fire or explosion due to damage to the protection circuit. In order to reduce the risk of these batteries and improve battery performance, the characteristics of the charging and discharging process must be analyzed and understood. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the charging and discharging characteristics of lithium-ion batteries using a battery charger and discharger and simulator to reduce the risk of loss of life due to overcharge and overdischarge, as well as casualties from fire and explosion due to damage to the protection circuit.
In order to optimize the performance of a lithium-ion battery, a performance prediction modeling technique that considers various degradation factors is required. In this work, mathematical modeling was carried-out to predict the change in discharging behavior and cycle life, taking into account the cycle aging of lithium-ion batteries. In order to validate the modeling, a cycling test was performed at the charge/discharge rate of 0.25C, and discharging behavior was measured through RPT (Reference Performance Test) performed at 30 cycle intervals. The accuracy of cycle life prediction was improved by considering the break-in mechanism, one of the phenomena occurring in the BOL (beginning of life), in the model for predicting the cycle life of lithium-ion batteries. The predicted change in cycle life based on the model was in good agreement with the experimental results.
This paper proposes a novel compound-type hybrid energy storage system (HESS) that inherits the unique advantages of both battery/supercapacitor (SC) and the SC/battery HESSs for electric vehicles (EVs). Eight operation modes are designed to match this system. A mode control strategy is developed for this HESS on the basis of these modes, and five classes of operation modes are established to simplify this strategy. The mode control strategy focuses on high operating efficiency and high power output. Furthermore, the compound-type HESS is designed such that the SC is the main priority in braking energy absorption. Thus, this HESS can operate efficiently and extend battery life. Simulation results also show that the compound-type HESS can not only supply adequate power to the motor inverter but can also determine suitable operation modes in corresponding conditions. Experimental results demonstrate that this HESS can extend battery life as well. The overall efficiency of the compound-type HESS is higher than those of the battery/SC and the SC/battery HESSs.

To improve the cycle-life and efficiency of an energy storage system for HEV, a dynamic control system consisted of a switch between a battery and an ultracapacitor module is proposed, which is appropriate for mild hybrid vehicle with 42V power net. The switch can be controlled based on the status of the battery and the ultracapacitor module, and a control algorithm that could largely decrease the number of high charging current peak is also implemented. Therefore the cycle life of the battery can be improved such that it is suitable for a mild hybrid vehicle with frequent engine start-stop and regenerative-braking. Also, by maximizing the use of the ultracapacitor, the system efficiency during high current charging and discharging operation is improved. Finally, this system has the effects that improves the efficiency of energy storage system and reduces the fuel consumption of a vehicle. To verify the validity of the proposed system, this paper presented cycles test results of different energy storage systems: a simple VRLA battery, hybrid energy Pack (HEP, a VRLA battery in Parallel with Ultracapacitor) and a HEP with a switch that controlled by energy management system (EMS). From the experimental result, it was proved the effectiveness of the algorithm.

In the field of defense, one-shot devices such as missiles are stored for a long period of time after they are manufactured, so it is essential to predict their storage life. A study was conducted to find the shelf life of a Li-ion battery used in one-shot devices. To do this, a Li-ion battery that has been used in weapon systems for more than 5 years was secured. A non-functional test was performed on the battery to check for external changes or failures. After the non-functional test, a discharge test was performed to measure the performance after storing it. Through the test, the performance was checked, including the initial charging voltage, discharge time, and battery temperature, and the trend of the change was identified. An F-test, One-way ANOVA, and regression analysis were performed to verify the aging, and the shelf life of the battery was estimated by an approximation formula that was derived through a regression analysis. As a result of the ANOVA, the p-value was less than the reference value of 0.05, and the performance of the battery decreased by more than 15% after a certain period of time. This change is assumed to result from the change in physical properties of the lithium polymer cell.
This paper describes the design and control of a phase shift full bridge converter with a current doubler, which can be used for the on-board charger for the lead-acid battery of electric forklifts. Unlike the common resistance load, the battery has a large capacitance element and it absorbs the entire converter output ripple current, thereby shortening the battery life and degrading the system efficiency. In this paper a phase shift full bridge converter with a current doubler has been adopted to decrease the output ripple current and the transformer rating of the charger. The charge controller is designed by using the small signal model of the converter, taking into consideration the internal impedance of the battery. The stability and performance of the battery charger is then verified by constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) charge experiments using a lead-acid battery bank for an electric forklift.
