  • The loss of the sulfur cathode material through dissolution of the polysulfide into electrolyte causes a significant capacity reduction of the lithium-sulfur cell during the charge-discharge reaction, thereby debilitating the electrochemical performance of the cell. We addressed this problem by using a chemical and physical approach called reduction of polysulfide dissolution through direct coating functional inorganic (graphene oxide) or organic layer (polyethylene oxide) on electrode, since the deposition of external functional layer can chemically interact with polysulfide and physically prevent the leakage of lithium polysulfide out of the electrode. Through this approach, we obtained a composite electrode for a lithium-sulfur battery (sulfur: 60%) coated with uniform and thin external functional layers where the thin external layer was coated on the electrode by solution coating and drying by a subsequent heat treatment at low temperature (${\sim}80^{\circ}C$). The external functional layer, such as inorganic or organic layer, not only alleviates the dissolution of the polysulfide electrolyte during the charging/discharging through physical layer formation, but also makes a chemical interaction between the polysulfide and the functional layer. As-formed lithium-sulfur battery exhibits stable cycling electrochemical performance during charging and discharging at a reversible capacity of 700~1187 mAh/g at 0.1 C (1 C = 1675 mA/g) for 30 cycles or more.

  • A novel pseudo-continuous conduction mode (PCCM) voltage-fed single-stage power factor correction (PFC) full-bridge battery charger is proposed in this paper. By connecting a freewheeling transistor in parallel with an input inductor, the PFC cell can operate in the PCCM with a constant duty ratio. Thus, the dc/dc stage can be designed using this constant duty ratio and the restriction on the duty ratio of the PFC cell is eliminated. As a result, the input current distortion is less and the dc bus voltage becomes controllable over the wide output power range of the battery charger. Moreover, the operation principle of the dc/dc stage is designed to be similar to that of a conventional phase-shifted full-bridge converter. Therefore, it is easy to implement. In this paper, the operation of the new converter is explained, and the design considerations of the controller and key parameters are presented. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 1 kW prototype are given to confirm the operation of the proposed converter.

  • In this paper, in order to get the characteristics of the lithium secondary cell, such as charge and discharge characteristic, temperature characteristic, self-discharge characteristic and the capacity recovery rate etc, we build a thermal model that estimate the impedance of battery by experiment & simulation. In this one-dimensional model, Seven governing equations are made to solve seven variables c, $c_s,\;\Phi_1,\;\Phi_2,\;i_2$, j and T. The thermal model parameters used in this model have been adjusted according to the experimental data measured in the laboratory. The result(Voc, Impedance) of this research can be used in BMS(Battery Management System), so an efficient method of using battery is developed.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear observer design method for SOC(state-of-charge) estimation of Lithium polymer battery cell. The dynamic equation of the battery cell is modeled as a simple RC electrical circuit with a nonlinear voltage source and the parameters are obtained via nonlinear optimization. Using the sum of squares decomposition, the observer gain is designed such that the error dynamics is asymptotically stable and the decay rate is below the prescribed value. In order to illustrate the performance of the observer, a computer simulation is performed using the experimental data with the UDDS(urban dynamometer driving schedule) current profile.

  • Radioisotope (Nuclear) battery using $^{63}Ni$ was prepared as beta cell. The electroplated $^{63}Ni$ on Ni foil is fabricated, and beta cell and photovoltaic hybrid battery was designed to use at both day and night in space project. A Ni-plating solution is prepared by dissolving metal particles including $^{62}Ni$ and $^{63}Ni$ from neutron irradiation of ($n,{\gamma}$). Electroplating solution of a chloride bath consists on nickel ions in HCl, $H_3BO_3$, and KOH. The deposition was carried out at current density of $10mA\;cm^{-2}$. The prepared beta source was attached on a PN junction and measured I-V properties. The power output at activity of 0.07 mCi and 0.45 mCi were 0.55 pW and 2.69 nW, respectively.

  • In order to level electric power of the photovoltaic and wind-turbine system and ensure fast response of the fuel-cell and micro-turbine, the energy storage is required in the microgrid system. In this paper, a simplified simulation model of the battery energy storage for charging method with IUIa is developed using PSCAD/EMTDC. The model consists of e.m.f.(electromotive force), internal resistor and overvoltage capacitor. A method for deciding parameters of the model on a case-by-case basis is proposed. The developed model can be used in the simulation of a complicated system such as a microgrid system.

  • Battery cells are connected in parallel to enlarge the system capacity. However, cell inconsistency may reduce the overall system capacity and cause the over-charging or over-discharging issue. This paper proposes a SOC-based sequencing equalizer for parallel-connected battery configuration that uses the ANFIS (adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system) algorithm to make the switching decision. Depend on the load current and the SOC (state-of-charge) rate of cells, the switching decision is made to equalize the SOC of the battery cells. The simulation results show that the system capacity is maximized and the controller is adaptive for a large number of parallel-connected in dynamic load profile.
