The Purpose of this study is to Provide a basic data for Projects of residential bathroom remodeling according to contemporary life style. The subjects of this investigation are collected through questionnaire from adult resident who live in Seoul Korea. Four hundred ten cases are collected, and frequencies, percentile, crosstabs, and factor analysis and varianc analysis using Spss-win program analyze adequate cases in necessary condition. In this study, residents demographic informations, bathroom preferences, types, sizes, cost construction period, instruments needs, behaviors and facilities seperation are included. By statistics treatment, the significance of the data is analyzed.

In the design guideline about the existing elderly house, the equipment related to kitchen and bathroom are the most important in the secure and functional aspect. On the other hand, the present elderly house is being designed according to foreign design guideline or common housing form instead of reflecting living and physical qualities of the korean elderly. Therefore, in this study based on the guideline of the existing literature, we made kitchen and bathroom equipments and conducted an experiment in finding proper position and height for korean elderly enough to use the kitchen and bathroom conveniently and independently. Based on the guideline of the existing literature related to foreign and domestic elderly house, we made Mock-up furnished with the equipments of kitchen and bathroom. The equipments of kitchen consist of sink and shelves to be capable of changing height. The equipments of bathroom consist of different height wash bowls, toilet stools, grab bars, and a bathtub. The study was accomplished by observing and measuring the use of the elderly.

It is very important for the elderly to maintain their independence and to live safe and comfortable daily lives in order to lead an independent life. The bathroom in the house has the greatest number of fall accidents and has a great influence on the independence of the elderly. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a bathroom design method that improves the independence of the elderly whose physical function is deteriorated through preventing falls. In this study, first of all, we investigated the causes of falling in bathrooms based on the previous studies, and identified the intelligent services that can prevent falls and selected them according to individual needs. Secondly, we investigated the bathroom size of the apartment among the various housing type, analyzed the type of the bathroom, and developed a standard type of the bathroom. Thirdly, we analyzed the design guidelines for the elderly residents in Korea and proposed improvement directions. We also divided the intelligent sanitary appliances and fall-prevention products and proposed the installation method and directions. Therefore, the comprehensive bathroom design standards and proposals proposed in this study will be the basis of bathroom design to prevent falls and improve independence of the elderly, and it will be easy to understand and help the designer in designing. Finally, this study is meaningful in that it provides independence of the elderly through fall prevention and increases the easiness of hygiene action and suggests direction to maintain self-sustaining life of the elderly.

Bathroom in apartment has the main functions of bath, washing hand and evacuation. The bathroom equipments for these functions are bathtub, shower booth, washbasin and toilet stool. Generally, these equipment are put together in one space, so it may cause people have trouble in using bathroom by other family members' occupation. Therefore the purpose of this study is to investigate the degree of preference about bathroom space fraction and grope for the connection with other spaces in apartment. The subject of this study were residents who live in brand apartments located in Seoul. The survey were carried out from november to December 2006. The data were analyzed through SPSS/PC+ using frequency, percentage and crossovers. The results of this study are as following, 1. A number of respondents would have trouble in using the bathroom by other family members' occupation once a week or more. The functional fraction of bathroom space is needed. 2. Close adjacency to Powder space, dress room is preferred. Coordination of washbasin and powder space is also needed. 3. Each separated spaces can be connected with other related spaces.

A bathroom in house has been stressed not only as a space for physiology and hygiene but also leisure and healthcare. However, the bathroom is the most likely space where an elderly person can have an accident and it is uncomfortable space for them because of their deteriorating physical ability. So the purpose of this study is to help the elderly use their bathroom conveniently by providing smart service. Therefore, we carry out 18 smart service patterns that contain assistive devices and sensors for bathroom. Considering applicability and frequency, from among these service patterns, we suggest 4 service patterns. First is a fall prevention service. This service helps elderly use the bathroom safely at night. Second is a getting ready to go out service. This service helps the situation that elderly use the bathroom after getting up in the morning. Third is a security service in daily life especially before or after meals. And final is a service regarding personal hygiene service after returning home. This service helps to shower or bathe after return home. These services have positive influence in medical expense reductions, good health care and self-reliance of elderly.

The study on bathroom plan for the elderly who use wheelchair has been done continuously. However, the elderly's behaviour at the bathroom and consideration for the caregiver has been underestimated. In this perspective, the purpose of this study is to find out how much more bathroom size is needed for the elderly who use wheelchair and the caregiver based on their behaviours. The study method is as follows: First, behaviours which occur at bathroom were collected from the previous research. Second, the size needed was calculated based on the elderly and caregiver's movement. Third, the size of bathroom enough for the impaired elderly with caregivers was suggested. The room next to shower booth and bath tub should be expanded for the caregiver. In addition, the room beside the basin should be added as much as $600{\times}600$ to let the caregiver stand and support the elderly when they are needed to wash their hair. As a result, the size of bathroom should be at least planed as follow; $1.3m^2$ more for type A, $1.5m^2$ more for type B, $1.6m^2$ more for type C, and $1.1m^2$ more for type D. As the bathroom is the room that the elderly want to modify for their rest of the lives, the room should be reserved enough from the early stage of design, so that this will make the elderly be possible stay at the place until they want to stay.

As the needs of housing for the elderly has increased, many researches have been carried out and some housing projects for the elderly including nursing home began to be provided. Most researches have focused on the development of housing type or space layout and only several ones on interior design. The interior design in house influences physically or psychologically on the elderly who lives in. Also, the subject of them which examined the needs or preference for housing for the elderly were the middle-aged, not the aged. The purpose of the study was to examine the preferred characteristics of interior design in residential space by the elderly. The structured interview with 120 old persons who lived in Busan was carried out using by a questionnaire and 3D images. The elderly answered about the preferred interior style, color, lighting and interior finishes of each room in house, such as living room, master bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. On the basis of the findings, the characteristics of interior design of each room in house which the elderly preferred were presented. In general, they preferred the mixed interior style with tradition and modem. Also, the reddish and purple interior color, flower or plant patterned wall finishes, and wood floor were preferred in living room and master bedroom by the elderly. The white interior color and one colored wall finishes without any pattern were preferred in kitchen and bathroom.

This research grasped the change of bathroom type, the present status for the residents' bathrooms, the level of satisfaction and preference for the residents' bathrooms, along with the plane of large-size apartment. This research aims to contribute to making the bathroom space to be able to satisfy the residents' desires. A total of 115 samples, acquired via internet survey, were analyzed with the statistical computer program SPSS PC+ 15.0 with the bathroom plane analysis. The results of this research are as follows. 1) As the results of the most representative plane, were divided into total 4 bathroom types, public bathrooms were $3.9-5.29m^2$ couple bathrooms were over than $3.17-8.3m^2$ in the average bathroom area, and there were two in less than $199m^2$ and even three in more than $199m^2$ in the number of bathrooms. 2) Three bathrooms were preferred by the residents who have three bathrooms now and by the younger generation though two bathrooms were preferred by most residents in the bathroom number. Most of the public bathrooms and couple bathrooms were considered to be proper in the bathroom area. 3) The preferred types were different according to each brand in the preference of the bathroom form. This means that to present a new plane figure including various bathroom forms is recommended in planning the bathroom space hereafter, that the bathroom spaces are changing. 4) In the bathroom environment, to present the technical solution through the study for the natural lighting and the sound arresting is required. This research hopes that the results of this research will be able to be used as the basic data to provide the bathroom space equipped with a pleasant environment condition to the residents.

The purpose of this study is to get a grasp on the current trend of apartment facilities by analyzing the bathroom facilities of the brand apartments, which are currently being sold in the metropolitan area. Twenty eight apartment complexes from top seven brand apartment, ranked by its construction ability in 2007, were selected as the subject of the study. Research was conducted by studying bathroom facilities of each complexes through e-catalogues in their web-site. The results of the analysis are as follows. Functional improvements as well as digital equipments were added to the basic facilities. Also in order to upgrade the quality of bathrooms, various and high-quality facilities and finishing materials were used as well as glass partitions for separation of dry and wet area, sunlight windows and so on. The conclusion reached to the fact that those various bathroom facilities need to be considered in the aspect of providing high quality living environment, not just supplying various bathroom to the future customer.

The purpose of this study was to provide a guideline for the bathroom fixtures of the aged by examining current status. The study has been carried out by measuring physical size of 50 aged peoples over 65 years old and their bathroom fixture status. The results were revealed as follows; 1. The height of washstand is $0.46\~0.52$ time of person's height. Adequate height of wash stand is proposed as $74\~80$ cm. The height of current market available wash stand is very close to the proposed size. 2. The height of toilet is $0.23\~0.27$ time of person's height. Adequate height of toilet is proposed as $38\~41$ cm. The height of current market available toilet is also very close to the proposed size. 3. The height of bathtub is $0.26\~0.35$ time of person's height. Adequate height of bath tub is proposed as $45\~49$ cm. The proposed height is higher than that of current bath tub available in the market. However, it should be noted that the proposed height is the sum of bath tub it self and elevation during actual installation. As stated above, it is revealed that the physical dimensions of the bathroom fixtures in the current market are properly sized. However, to draw more practical guideline for the bathroom fixture, more studies including actual experimentation will be required in the future.
