  • Ordinary heterotrophic organism (OHO) active biomass plays key roles in biological wastewater treatment processes. However, due to the lack of measurement techniques, the OHO active biomass exists hypothetically within the design and simulation of biological wastewater treatment processes. This research was purposed to develop a quick and easy quantifying technique for the OHO active biomass applying a modified batch aerobic growth test. Two nitrification-denitrification activated sludge systems, with 10- and 20-day sludge ages, were operated to provide well-cultured mixed liquor to the batch tests. A steady state design model was firstly applied to quantify the "theoretical" OHO active biomass concentration of the two parent systems. The mixed liquor from the parent systems was then inoculated to a batch growth test and a batch digestion test to estimate the "measured" OHO active biomass concentration in the mixed liquor. The measured OHO active biomass concentrations with the batch growth test and the batch digestion test were compared to the theoretical concentrations of the parent system. The measured concentrations with the batch growth test were generally smaller than the theoretical concentrations. However, the measured concentrations with the batch aerobic digestion tests showed a good correlation to the theoretical concentrations. Thus, a different microbial growth condition (i.e., a higher food/biomass ratio) in the batch growth test, compared to the parent system or the batch digestion test, was found to cause underestimation of the OHO active biomass concentrations.

  • The biodegradability of organics has become essential for the design and modeling of a biological nutrient removal process. Respirometry for the batch test just with wastewater has been conducted to estimate active biomass and readily biodegradable organics in municipal wastewater simultaneously. Municipal wastewater contains significant active biomass, which is estimated about 17% of COD. Compared to the batch test seeded with sludge, the batch test just with wastewater represents a little higher readily biodegradable organics. This might be due to the different environment of the logarithmic growth of active biomass. The nitrate uptake rate test has been also performed for the estimation of the readily biodegradable organics. The nitrate uptake rate test results in a little higher readily biodegradable organics compared to the batch test seeded with sludge and similar organics compared to the batch test just with wastewater. This might be caused by the different sludge of a sequencing batch reactor process. Taking the result of the previous research into account, the readily biodegradable, slowly biodegradable, active biomass, soluble inert, and particulate inert organics are estimated about 11%, 49%, 17%, 11%, and 12% of COD, respectively.

  • Fast delivery of construction projects provides more value to project owners. Batch production, which is production not in single pieces, but in batches, is a common approach in repetitive construction projects such as multi-unit residential building construction projects. In batch production, the use of a small batch size allows the early start of subsequent activities, and thus can lead to early completion of projects. In addition to batch size, balance between productivities in construction activities can affect project duration. However, the impact of the balance between productivities with regard to their order on project duration has not been studied. The main goal of this study is to test a hypothesis, which is that the order of construction activities' unbalanced productivities affects the amount of time reduction that can be achieved by using a small batch size. A computer-based simulation model was developed, and five different cases were simulated to test the hypothesis. The conclusion of the simulation result is that the order of productivities does not affect the time reduction achieved by using a small batch size. It is expected that the findings of this study can help general contractors make decisions in terms of batch size.

  • In this paper, the efficient BILBO(named EBILBO) is designed for BIST that is able to batch the testing when circuit is designed on FPGA. The proposed algorithm of batch testing is able to test the normal operation speed with one-pin-count that can control all part of large and complex circuit. PRTPG is used for the test pattern and MISR is used for PSA. The proposed algorithm of batch testing is VHDL coding on behavioral description, so it is easily modified the model of test pattern generation, signature analysis and compression. The EBILBO's area and the performance of designed BIST are evaluated with ISCAS89 benchmark circuit on FPGA. In circuit with above 600 cells, it is shown that area is reduced below 30%, test pattern is flexibly generated about 500K and the fault coverage is from 88.3% to 100%. EBILBO for the proposed batch testing BIST is able to execute concurrently normal and test mode operation in real time to the number of $s+n+(2^s/2^p-1)$ clock(where, in CUT, # of PI;n, # of register, p is order # of polynomial). The proposed algorithm coded with VHDL is made of library, then it well be widely applied to DFT that satisfy the design and test field on sme time.

  • Partition coefficients for zinc vary on a broad range depending on properties of the foundry sands (TOC, clay content, total iron content) and solution pH. Among these properties, solution pH was found to be the most important factor. Empirical equations were developed from batch tests to predict partition coefscients and rate constants as a function of foundry sand properties and solution pH. Rate constants obtained from batch (kinetic) tests and batch sorption tests were found to be comparable when the solution pHs were comparable.

  • In this paper, an efficient BILBO(named EBILBO) is proposed for batch testing application when a BIST (built-in self test) circuit is implemented on ASIC. In a large and complex circuit, the proposed algorithm of batch testing has one pin-count that can easily control 4 test modes in the normal speed of circuit operation. For the implementation of the BIST cifcuit, the test patern needed is generated by PRTPG(pseudo-random test pattern generator) and the ouput is observed by proposed algorithm is easily modified, such as the modelling of test pattern genration, signature EBILBO area and performance of the implemented BIST are evaluated using ISCAS89 benchmark circuits. As a resutl, in a circuit above 600 gates, it is confirmed that test patterns are genrated flexibly about 500K as EBILBO area is 59%, and the range of fault coverage is from 88.3% to 100%. And the optimized operation frequency of EBILBO designed and the area are 50MHz and 150K respectively. On the BIST circit of the proposed batch testing, the test mode of EBILBO is able to execute as realtime that has te number of s$\^$+/n$\^$+/(2s/2p-1) clocks simultaneously with the normal mode of circuit operation. Also the proposed algorithm is made of the library with VHDL coding thus, it will be widely applied to DFT (design for testability) that satisfies the design and test field.

  • The batch least square filter is widely used for ground estimations. However, in orbit determination (OD) under inaccurate initial conditions and few measurement data the performance by the batch least square filter can lead an unstable results. To complement weak part of the batch filter, the batch unscented transformation without any linearization process is developed by ACL (Astrodynamics and Control Laboratory) in YONSEI University. In this paper, the batch unscented transformation is introduced and applied to satellite orbit determination using Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR) data. Only range of the satellite measured from ground tracking stations is used for measurement data. The results of simulation test are compared with those of the weighted batch least square filter for various initial states errors (position and velocity). Simulation results show that the batch unscented transformation is comparable or slightly superior to batch least square filter in the orbit determination.
