Temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor using nonlinear predictive control algorithm (비선형 예측제어 알고리즘을 이용한 회분식 중합 반응기의 온도제어)

  • Nonlinear unified predictive control(UPC) algorithm was applied to the temperature control of a batch polymerization reactor for polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA). Before the polymerization reaction is initiated, the parameters of the process model are determined by the recursive least squares(RLS) method. During the reaction, nonlinearities due to generation of heat of reaction and variation of heat transfer coefficients are predicted through the nonlinear model developed. These nonlinearities are added to the process output from the linear process model. And then, the predicted process output is used to calculate the control output sequence. The performance of nonlinear control algorithm was verified by simulation and compared with that of the linear unified predictive control algorithm. In the experiment of a batch PMMA polymerization, nonlinear unified predictive control was implemented to regulate the temperature of the reactor, and the validity of the nonlinear model was verified through the experimental results. The performance of the nonlinear controller turned out to be superior to that of the linear controller for tracking abrupt changes in setpoint.

  • It is not easy to establish the correct standard time and standard manhour in a process of small quantity batch production system, especially in a case of irregular quantity of production. Therefore, how to establish rational standard time about manufacturing process of a power cable company which is representative business for small quantity batch production system will be suggested in this paper. Furthermore, how to establish standard manhour which can be used for effective control of labor productivity will also be presented.

A Study on the Monodispersed Silica Fine Particles Prepared by Using Batch-Semibatch Mixed Process (회분과 반회분의 혼합형 공정에 의해 생성된 단분산 실리카 미립자에 관한 연구)

  • Modispersed silica fine particles were produced from the hydrolysis of $Si(OC_2H_5)_4$ by using batch-semibatch mixed systems. Four types of mixed process, i.e., batch-batch, batch-semibatch, semibatch-batch, semibatch-semibatch, were used in order to measure mean particle size, particle size distribution, yield, and packing density. As a result of the test, silica particles prepared by semibatch-semibatch process were larger than those prodeced from any other systems in particle size and yield. On the other hand, silica particles prepared by batch-semibatch process were better than those produced from any other systems in particle size distribution and packing density. Especially, it was found that particle size of $SiO_2$ prepared by semibatch-batch process decreased with increasing the reaction time. Therefore, batch-semibatch process was a successful method for controlling the size, i.e., a narrow distribution of a particle size which ranges to several microns.

  • A batch Process has a multi-way data structure that consists of batch-time-variable axis, so the statistical modeling of a batch process is a difficult and challenging issue to the process engineers. In this study, We applied a statistical process control technique to the general batch process data, and implemented a fault-detection and Statistical process control system that was able to detect, identify and diagnose the fault. Semiconductor etch process and semi-batch styrene-butadiene rubber process data are used to case study. Before the modeling, we pre-processed the data using the multi-way unfolding technique to decompose the data structure. Multivariate regression techniques like support vector regression and partial least squares were used to identify the relation between the process variables and process condition. Finally, we constructed the root mean squared error chart and variable contribution chart to diagnose the faults.

A modified simulated annealing search algorithm for scheduling of chemical batch processes with CIS policy

  • As a trend toward multi-product batch processes is increasing in Chemical Process Industry (CPI), multi-product batch scheduling has been actively studied. But the optimal production scheduling problems for multi-product batch processes are known as NP-complete. Recently Ku and Karimi [5] have studied Simulated Annealing(SA) and Jung et al.[6] have developed Modified Simulated Annealing (MSA) method which was composed of two stage search algorithms for scheduling of batch processes with UIS and NIS. Jung et al.[9] also have studied the Common Intermediate Storage(CIS) policy which have accepted as a high efficient intermediate storage policy. It can be also applied to pipeless mobile intermediate storage pacilities. In spite of these above researches, there have been no contribution of scheduling of CIS policy for chemical batch processes. In this paper, we have developed another MSA for scheduling chemical batch processes with searching the suitable control parameters for CIS policy and have tested the this algorithm with randomly generated various scheduling problems. From these tests, MSA is outperformed to general SA for CIS batch process system.

Batch Scheduling Algorithm with Approximation of Job Completion Times and Case Studies (작업완료시각 추정을 활용한 배치 스케줄링 및 사례 연구)

  • Many small and medium-sized manufacturing companies process various product types to respond different customer orders in a single production line. To improve their productivity, they often apply batch processing while considering various product types, constraints on batch sizes and setups, and due date of each order. This study introduces a batch scheduling heuristic for a production line with multiple product types and different due dates of each order. As the process times vary due to the different batch sizes and product types, a recursive equation is developed based on a flow line model to obtain the upper bound on the completion times with less computational complexity than full computation. The batch scheduling algorithm combines and schedules the orders with same product types into a batch to improve productivity, but within the constraints to match the due dates of the orders. The algorithm incorporates simple and intuitive principles for the purpose of being applied to small and medium companies. To test the algorithm, two case studies are introduced; a high pressure coolant (HPC) manufacturing line and a press process at a plate-type heat exchanger manufacturer. From the case studies, the developed algorithm provides significant improvements in setup frequency and thus convenience of workers and productivity, without violating due dates of each order.

Cell Growth and Lipid Production from Fed-batch Cultivation of Chlorella minutissima according to Culture Conditions (유가식 배양에서 배양조건에 따른 Chlorella minutissima의 생육 및 지질생산)

  • The culture condition of growing Chlorella minutissima was optimized to produce biodiesel for fed-batch cultivation. First, under heterotrophic cultivation, the optimum level of glucose was determined to be 10 g/L for 20 days. After, three cultivation conditions were operated: autotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic growth. The lipid level and the maximum cell concentration from the fed-batch heterotrophic process were 32.0 (%, v/v) and 15.0 (g-dry wt./L) in 20 L flask, respectively. In addition, since the relatively constant specific lipid production rate was observed as 0.040 (% lipid/g-dry wt./day) at the latter period of cultivation time, the fed-batch process could maintain continuous lipid production. Fed-batch process is higher than those values from the batch process. The lipids from the fed-batch process contained over 38% of $C_{18}$, known as the suitable composition for the biodiesel application. For mixotrophic and heterotrophic growth under fed-batch condition, glucose was proved to be an appropriate carbon source for a large scale outdoor cultivation. For fed-batch cultivation, the feeding rate of seawater medium containing glucose was decided to be 0.5 L/day. The mixotrophic cultivation maintained maximum cell concentration of 24 (g-dry wt./L) and the lipid level of 43 (%, w/w). The lipid composition from this process was also proved to be suitable for the biodiesel production. The fatty acids from the mixotrophic growth contains 18% of $C_{17}$ and 49% of $C_{18}$, implying It also tells that C. minutissima is a suitable resource of biodiesel. Especially, the mixotrophic cultivation with fed-batch process might be useful for the large scale cultivation for the biodiesel production.

  • A scheme of dynamic optimization for batch reactor his been developed and applied to a semi-batch esterification reactor. To obtain optimal operating conditions for the given semi-batch reactor system with complex reaction kinetic and process constraints, a general nonlinear programming solver and finite element techniques have been introduced. The optimization results for the complex reactor system have been compared with those of Kumar et al. [1984] to show better optimization performance. The proposed optimizing scheme has been applied to the free end time problem to obtain the realistic operating condition. The results can supply valuable information for economic operation of the given batch esterification reactor.
