  • CD30 is a member of tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNFR) superfamily and has pleiotropic functions including cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and death, depending on cell types and stage of differentiation. Although CD30 expression has been described mainly in hematopoietic tissues, several types of nonhematopoietic tumors including embryonic carcinoma and germ-cell tumors express CD30. We examined CD30 distribution in the testis and epididymis from wild type and CD30-deficient mice. In the testis, spermatogonia, spermatocytes and Sertoli cells expressed CD30, but not in spermatids. Spermatogonia and spermatocytes near the basement membrane strongly reacted to anti-CD30. In the epididymis, CD30 expression was exclusively observed in luminal epithelia and some interstitial cells. Taken together, these results show a spatio-temporal regulation of CD30 expression in mouse testis and epididymis and suggest a possible role of CD30 in spermatogonia and spermatocytes.

  • Fire-fighters have been struggling against heat and dense smoke caused by fire when it occurs especially at the basement or the inner place of a building. An indoor fire-fighting robot with well heat-resistance, great searching cameras and good extinguishing ability has been recently developed. It never suffocate, coming into the fire district and extinguishes fire directly. In this study, several experiment was conducted to promote field working ability of the fire-fighting robot. As a result, heat resistance, water discharge and field working appeared satisfactory.

  • A study of the fracture systems in outcrops of southern onshore Vietnam revealed two kinds of fracture groups according to their origin: cooling fractures and deformation related fractures. Cooling of magma introduced extensive fractures in the batholiths with wide spacing and narrow aperture. They are found widespread in all magmatic bodies, but result in poor reservoir quality due to low bulk porosity and narrow aperture. Cooling fractures are often reactivated during later stress regimes. Deformation related fractures, especially 'fault damage zones' and 'hanging wall deformation' is thought to form the most important reservoir type in the fractured basement rock. The porosity formed by intense fracturing and fault breccia along minor fault zones is thought to be the producing zones in the producing fields of Cuu Long basin. They are found along major faults and widespread in hanging wall blocks.

  • Although the biological potential of gastric epithelial dysplasia (GED) as a precursor of gastric cancer has never been in doubt, the classification of these lesions has been controversial and fraught with marked variations in approach to diagnosis across the world. The complexity of cyto-architectural features has been considered to be of paramount importance for the diagnosis of carcinoma in Japan, while breach of the basement membrane and invasion into the lamina propria has been considered the sine qua non of malignancy and hence a pre-requisite for the diagnosis of cancer in the West. In Korea, although the incidence of gastric cancer is similar to Japan, the diagnostic approach to GED or cancer seems to lie midway between Western and Japanese criteria. In this review, we will discuss the difference in the diagnosis of GED and cancer between two pathologists working in the comprehensive cancer center located in Japan and Korea, one of the most prevalent areas in the world for gastric cancer.

  • Seoul Metropolitan Rapid Transit Corporation has 148's stations. Total length is 152km and most of the station is located in the basement and Groundwater occur inflow of 700,000 tons per day. Groundwater is treated as a natural flow way instead of artificial ways. Therefore, most of the collection wells is located in the low place or station for the efficient induction and collecting water. Manhole overtopping is occurring frequently because groundwater is concentrated in the drain pipe near the collecting well and heavy rainfall in summer. As a result, ballast contamination and radon levels are increased in tunnel. This paper introduces a solution is increasing overflow in tunnel, which introduces drainage system of non-motorized that uses differencial head between collecting well and manhole.

  • When we excavate an underground to build basement, the ground anchors are needed to prevent collapse of neighboring ground, subsidence and movement. Ground anchor construction required shore sheet piles, wales and struts as to maintain secure excavation. Existing box-type bracket using head part of ground anchor can not be possibly adjustable to the boring angle because the brackets are manufactured with unified angle in a factory. Also, box-type brackets have imperfection and instability caused by inequable force. In this study, a new bracket system is proposed. The bracket's side plate is reinforced and the angle of boring can be controlled. To investigate the structural performance of presented brackets, FEM analysis has been performed by using ANSYS commercial program. As a result, this bracket shows sufficient stability for all angle case and the strength is increased about 24% than existing bracket.

  • Hong Kong is a renowned small city with densely placed skyscrapers. It is no surprise that heavy duty or even mega foundations are built over the years to support these structures. To cope with the fast construction pace, several heavy deep foundation types have been widely adopted with some prescribed design rules. This Paper has selected two commonly adopted but distinctive foundation types, namely large diameter bored piles and percussive steel H-piles to illustrate the special design and construction considerations related to these pile types in related to local context. The supervision requirement in related to foundation works for which again may be unique in Hong Kong will also be highlighted. A case history is also discussed in the later part of the Paper to illustrate the application of one of these foundations and to highlight the importance of considering foundation design and basement excavation method in a holistic manner.

  • Recently, As the high rise buildings have been demanded due to the rising current of land price, the permanent drainage method have been applied during and after the construction as a way to reduce the buoyancy acting on the bottoms of the foundations in the basement. This method has brought about the consolidation subsidence of the ground and turned out to be the problems of sinking hole and foundation re-settlement. The representative methods to be used for extending the life cycle of the existing building structure which is tilted by the foundation re-settlement or differential settlement of the foundation can be divided into the building structures reinforcement and soil reinforcement. The purpose of this study is to analyze and present the application example of steel pipe pile method to extend the life cycle of the six -stories building tilted in a soft ground.

  • A survey of radon concentrations in both indoor and outdoor atmospheres was carried out using EIRM and Cup Monitor for the period of February 1996 to March 1997. EIRM were used to measure the indoor and outdoor radon concentration at five major cities university. Cup Monitor were also used to measure the indoor radon concentrations at shopping store, office building, apartment, hospital and house in Seoul. The mean indoor and outdoor radon concentrations at the five major cities(Seoul, Daegu, Daejon, Cwangiu and Busan) were 24.1 Bq/m$^3$and 8.62 Bq/m$^3$, respectively. The ratio of indoor to outdoor radon concentrations ranged front 1.7 to 3.9. Inspection of its seasonal distribute pattern indicates the enhancement during winter relative to summer, consistently for both indoor and outdoor air. The results of the survey showed that the concentrations in basements were clearly higher than those in usual living/working places.

  • Condition assessment of concrete structures is essential since their performance affects public safety. Impact resonance testing has been widely used for the nondestructive testing of the concrete structures. In this article, the background, basic principles of the impact resonance testing were described. Not only laboratory studies but also the field applications such as basement concrete of large structure and large slurry wall are described.
