  • More than 100 Mbps rate is needed in the UBcN for a subscriber to receive broadband traffics with multi-channel like UDTV or 3DTV. Although the optical fiber is recently deployed for the FTTH, the UTP is the most widely used medium and will be used in UBcN age. Network providers may consider the 1000BASE-T or the vectorized VDSL if they adopts the UTP in the place where does not have optical fibers. But UTP should be expanded because 1000BASE-T and vectorized UTP needs 4 and 3 pairs cable, respectively while residential region has not exceeding 2 pair UTP cable. To solve the problem, we propose a 500BASE-T technology using 2 pairs UTP in this paper. The technology introduces a rate adaptation sublayer and a SERDES sublayer above and under the PCS, respectively. The rate adaptation sublayer is compatible for the GMII. Also, if we modify the SERDES sublayer, the technology can easily obtain 250BASE-T with 2 pairs UTP. We implement such functions with FPGA and analog board and verify the function of rate adaptation and symbol vector synchronization, and effective transmission rate by experiments. In particular, we show that link efficiency is increased by enable control in the rate adaptation sublayer.

  • The sequence of ITS (partial 16S ribosomal DNA, complete ITS1, 5.8S ribosomal DNA and ITS2, and partial 28S ribosomal DNA) was analysed by PCR and autosequencing in Sarcodon aspratus. The ITS lenght of S. aspratus was 716 base pair. As this sequence compared with other reports on S. aspratus (ace No AF335110), the sequence variation based on nucleotide deletion and substitution was $1.8\%$. This nucleotide variation rate in same species was very higher than in other species. Also, the sequence varitation rates between this S. aspratus and S. imbricatus, and S. squamus were $8\%\;and\;10\%$, respectively. This results suggested that the high sequence variation of S. aspratus might be caused specific host and inhabitat environment which limited gene flow.

  • The 185 ribosomal RNA gene (185 rDNA) of the marine alga Porphyra sp. 723 (Bangiales, Rhodophyta) was amplified using the polymerase chain reaction and its sequence was analysed. The Porphyra species was a summer strain collected on rocks in upper intertidal zone at Ikidae, Pusan on 23rd July 1999. The fronds were $1{\~}5 cm$ long, monostromatic, and orbicular or ovate shaped, They had spinulate processes at margin of the frond, Comparison of this 185 rDNA sequence with the other Forphyra species indicates that Porphyra sp. 723 has the same 185 rDNA sequence derived from Porphyra suborbiculata (NCBI access number; AB 013180) except one base pair substitution in 2327 base pairs.

  • In this paper, we designed the authentication system for home network service and applied it to actual sensor nodes. SNEP protocol of SPINS provides confidentiality of data and authentication. We achieved authentication key, encryption and decryption applied RCS encryption algorithm of SNEP. In addition, we used pair-wise key pre-distribution for prevention of authentication sniffing in wireless sensor network. The experiment environment consists of a base station receiving data and sensor nodes sending data. Each sensor nodes sends both the data and encrypted authentication key to the base station. The experiences had shown that the malfunction doesn't happen in communication among other groups. And we confirmed in tests that the system is secure when a sensor having malicious propose is added.

  • Shot interfering RNA (siRNA) can be used to silence specific gene expression and have many potential therapeutic applications. However, how to design an effective siRNA is still not clear. Highly effective siRNA has sequence-specific properties which are low G/C content, low internal stability at the sense strand 3'-terminus, sense strand base bias(position 1 is G/C, position 19 is /AU). Recently, mRNA secondary structure playsan important role in RNAi. Target site of siRNA in high-ordered structure (i.e hairpin loop, multi loop) or base pair of many hydrogen bonds dramatically reduce function of siRNA mediated gene silencing. Possible off-target effects of siRNA is detecting from BLAST search.

  • We installed a pair of geomagnetic ground station in Ichon branch of Radio Research Laboratory(Ichon station, N37.1447, E127.5509) and Kyunghee University(Yongin station, N37.1419, E127.0454). We have successfully finished test operation, and we are now setting up a data base for the real time monitoring of the geomagnetic field. We are also going to have another geomagnetic station for the southward direction at Chejuisland(Cheju University) in summer of 1997. By that time, we will have a complete set of geomagnetic data base for the near earth solar-terrestrial environment in real time. In this paper, we compare and analyze the results of geomagnetic field observations from our stations, Kakioka observatory, Wind and Geotail satellites when the coronal mass ejections(CME) occurred on Dec. 2, 1996.

  • Two leptocephali (36.2~69.2 mm in total length) of the family Muraenidae were collected off Jeju Island, Korea. They were identified using 742 base pairs of mitochondrial DNA 12S rRNA sequences, and their morphological description were presented. The two leptocephali were identified to Gymnothorax minor based on genetic distance (d=0.000), being well consistent with that of G. minor adult collected off Tongyeong. Gymnothorax minor leptocephali are characterized by morphological combinations: total myomeres 137~139, predorsal myomeres 32, preanal myomeres 82~86, body depth in total length more than 10%.

  • A Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) is a small genetic change or variation that can occur within a DNA sequence. It's the difference of one base at specific base pair position. SNP variation occurs when a single nucleotide, such as an A, replaces one of the other three nucleotide letters-C, G, or T. On average, SNP occur in the human population more than 1 percent of the time. They occur once in every 300 nucleotides on average, which means there are roughly 10 million SNPs in the human genome. Because SNPs occur frequently throughout the genome and tend to be relatively stable genetically, they serve as excellent biological markers. They can help scientists locate genes that are associated with disease such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes. They can also be used to track the inheritance of disease genes within families. SNPs may also be associated with absorbance and clearance of therapeutic agents. In the future, the most appropriate drug for an individual could be determined in advance of treatment by analyzing a patient's SNP profile. This pharmacogenetic strategy heralds an era in which the choice of drugs for a particular patient will be based on evidence rather than trial and error (so called "personalized medicine").

  • Currently Energy-Saving (ES) methods in cellular networks could be improved, as compensation method for irregular Base Station (BS) deployment is not effective, most regional ES algorithm is complex, and performance decline caused by ES action is not evaluated well. To resolve above issues, a low-complexity energy efficient BS cooperation mechanism for Long Time Evolution (LTE) networks is proposed. The mechanism firstly models the ES optimization problem with coverage, resource, power and Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. To resolve the problem with low complexity, it is decomposed into two sub-problems: BS Mode Determination (BMD) problem and User Association Optimization (UAO) problem. To resolve BMD, regional dynamic multi-stage algorithms with BS cooperation pair taking account of load and geographic topology is analyzed. And then a distributed heuristic algorithm guaranteeing user QoS is adopted to resolve UAO. The mechanism is simulated under four LTE scenarios. Comparing to other algorithms, results show that the mechanism can obtain better energy efficiency with acceptable coverage, throughput, and QoS performance.

  • The effect of the binding of CRP to the symmetrically synthetic 22, 28, and 30 bp lac promoter was investigated by 1H NMR. The binding of cAMP*CRP to the 22 bp DNA did not bring about any changes in the chemical shift values, but did cause selective line broadening of imino proton resonances of specific base pairs. However, The binding of cAMP*CRP to the 28 and 30 bp DNA brought about large changes on the imino proton resonances that seems to be induced by DNA bending. We studied also the role of cAMP as an activator of DNA/CRP complex formation by gel mobility shift assay. Gel mobility shift assay revealed that the cAMP*CRP complex was not able to bind to the 22 bp DNA fragment, but was able to bind to the 28 bp DNA fragment of lac promoter region.
