  • In general, building energy performance is evaluated with a detailed transient building energy simulation program. However, energy evaluation tools with the bin method are still used, because of their simple and easy way to calculate building energy performance, without reducing their precision. In this research, several heating and cooling degree day methods are compared, and evaluated with their performance for variable base temperature. This analysis considered about ten years of the continuous outdoor temperature, in the Seoul and Busan areas. It is concluded that the simplified bin method is more or less acceptable for Seoul and Busan, compared with the detailed hourly bin method.

  • This study investigated the effect of bonding temperature and holding time on microstructures and mechanical properties of diffusion bonded joint of Haynes230. The diffusion bonds were performed at the temperature of 950, 1050, and $1150^{\circ}C$ for holding times of 30, 60, 120 and 240 minutes at a pressure of 4MPa under high vacuum condition. The amount of non-bonded area and void observed in the bonded interface decreased with increasing bonding temperature and holding time. Cr-rich precipitates at the linear interface region restrained grain migration at $950^{\circ}C$ and $1050^{\circ}C$. However, the grain migration was observed in spite of short holding time due to the dissolution of precipitates to base metal in the interface region at $1150^{\circ}C$. Three types of the fracture surface were observed after tensile test. The region where the coalesce and migration of grain occurred much showed high fracture load because of base metal fracture whereas the region where those did less due to the precipitates demonstrated low fracture load because of interface fracture. The expected fracture load could be derived with the value of fracture area of base metal ($A_{BF}$) and interface ($A_{IF}$), $Load=201A_{BF}+153A_{IF}$. Based on this equation, strength of base metal and interface fracture were calculated as 201MPa and 153MPa, respectively.

  • In this study, brazing characteristics of the dissimilar Ti and Cu metals using a Zr-base amorphous filler ($Zr_{41.2}Ti_{13.8}Cu_{12.5}Ni_{10.0}Be_{22.5}$ in at.%) have been investigated for various bonding temperatures. In the sample brazed at $790^{\circ}C$ for 10 min., the Ti-rich phases in the joint were observed, while the Cu-rich phases were obtained in the sample brazed at $825^{\circ}C$ for 10 min.. Such a different microstructure and composition in the joints could be explained by the degree of the dissolution reaction. At $790^{\circ}C$, the reaction between the Zr-rich liquid phase and the Ti base metal was actively occurred to form Ti-rich liquid phase in the joint. As the temperature increased to $825^{\circ}C$, however, the reaction between the Ti-rich liquid phase and the Cu base metal was promoted to form the Cu-rich liquid phase in the joint finally. Such a different interface reaction is attributed to the reactivity or solubility between the Zr as a main element in the filler and the Ti and Cu as a base metal element.

  • The study was carried out to examine in more detail metallurgical and mechanical properties of brazed joints of diamond cutting wheel. In this work, shank(mild steel) and sintered bronze-base tips were brazed with three different filler materials(W-40, BAgl and BAg3S). The machine used in this work was a high frequency induction brazing equipment. The joint thickness, porosities and microstructure of brazed joints with brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) were evaluated with OLM, SEM, EDS and XRD. Bending(torque) test was also performed to evaluate strength of brazed joints. Further wetting test was performed in a vacuum furnace in order to evaluate the wettability of filler metals on base metals9shank and tips). The brazing temperature had a strong influence on the joint strength and the optimum brazing temperature range was about $700~850^{\circ}C$ for the bronze/steel combinations. The strength of the brazed joint was found to be influenced by the three factors : degree of reaction region, porosity content, joint thickness. The reaction region was formed in the bronze-base tip adjacent to the joint. The reaction region resulted in a bad influence on the strength due to the formation of Cu5.6Sn, CuZn4, $\beta(CuZn)$ and CdAg, etc. Porosities increased as brazing variables(brazing temperature, holding time) increased, and the brazed joints with porosities of less than about 3-5% had an optimum strength for the bronze-base tip.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were carried out in order to investigate the processability and the transcriptability of the injection molding of micro structures. For this purpose, we designed a mold insert having micro rib patterns on a relatively thick base part. Mold insert has a base of 2mm thickness, and has nine micro ribs on that base plate. Width and height of the rib are $300{\mu}m\;and\;1200{\mu}m$, respectively. We found a phenomenon similar to 'race tracking', due to 'hesitation' in the micro ribs. As the melt flows, it starts to cool down and melt front located in the ribs near the gate cannot penetrate further because the flow resistance is large in that almost frozen portion. When the base is totally filled, the melt front away from the gate is not frozen yet. Therefore, it flows back to the gate direction through the ribs. Consequently, transcriptability of the rib far from the gate is better. We also verified this phenomenon via numerical simulation. We further investigated the effects of processing conditions, such as flow rate, packing time, packing pressure, wall temperature and melt temperature, on the transcriptability. The most dominant factor that affects the flow pattern and the transcriptability of the micro rib is flow rate. High flow rate and high melt temperature enhance the transcriptability of micro rib structure. High packing time and high packing pressure result in insignificant dimensional variations of the rib. Numerical simulation also confirms that low flow rate causes a short shot of micro ribs and high wall temperature helps the filling of the micro ribs.

  • Co base superalloys have been widely used for the parts of gas turbine due to their excellent strength, thermal fatigue, oxidation resistance and weldability at high temperature. In this study, directional solidifications were carried out at various solidification rates, including $0.5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$ in the Co base superalloy FSX-414. The cellular interface were formed at a low solidification rate, $1{\mu}m/s$, and the dendritic interface was found at higher solidification rates, $5{\sim}300{\mu}m/s$. As the spacing of dendrite structure decreased, the size and spacing of eutectics decreased. Dendrite arm spacing decreased with increasing solidification rates and temperature gradient. It was interesting to find the $M_{23}C_{6}$ eutectic microstructure formed between $\gamma$ dendrites. Composition analysis showed that Cr and W were segregated severely between the dendrites, which resulted in the formation of Cr-rich $M_{23}C_{6}$ and W-rich MC carbides.

  • The bonding phenomena and mechanical property of duplex stainless steel during brazing have been investigated. The UNS32550 was used for base metal, and the MBF50 was used for insert metal. Brazing was carried out under the various conditions (brazing temperature : 1473K, 1498K, holding time : 0∼1.8ks). There were various microconstituents in the bonded interlayer because of reaction between liquid insert metal and base metal. In the early stage of brazing, BN is formed in the bonded interlayer and base metal near the bonded layer. Cr made is formed in the bonded interlayer. The amount of BN and Cr nitrides decrease with the increase of bonding temperature and holding time. Superior shear strength of 550MPa is obtained by restraining the formation of nitrides. • Nickel base superalloys are widely used for high temperature applications due to heat resisting capability and corrosion resistance at high temperatures. Superalloys with many strengthening alloying elements are frequently used in powder form to alleviate harmful effects of alloy segregation. HIP (hot isostatic pressing) and DB (diffusion bonding) as a form of solid-state bonding process is used to make turbine components, such as integrated turbine rotors. HIP/DB process requires many technical overcomes related to dimensional changes as well as microstructural control. In this research, HIP/DB process for nickel base superalloys, Udimet 720 and MM 247, were investigated with a view to control the dimensional change during the consolidation process. Simple disc-shaped cans were used to select the conceptual die design for the control of the dimensional change especially in radial direction. The change in the shape of consolidated shape was investigated using commercial FE code with constitutive equations fur low temperature plasticity deformation.
