An Experiment Study on the Chaos Phenomenon for a Rectangular Cantilever Beam (직사각형 외팔보의 혼돈현상에 대한 실험)

  • The slender rectangular cantilever beam has vef interesting to study dynamic behaviors of the harmonic base excitation of a cantilever beam shows many nonlinear dynamics due to unstability , energy transfer and mode coupling. Nonlinear phenomenon shows superharmonic, subharmonic, super subharmonic and chaotic motions of the cantilever beam. Experimental observation and verification of these phenomenon carry much importance for the theoretical study as well as in it self. In the experimental cantilever beam, the chaotic motions of the beam appear as a pink noise signal in FFT analysis and as a torus structure in the oscilloscope analyzed to eventually give information of chaotic motions of the cantilever beam.

Non-Planar Non-Linear Vibration Phenomenon on the One to One Resonance of the Circular Cantilever Beam (원형 외팔보의 일대일 공진에서의 비평면 비선형 진동현상)

  • Experimental and theoretical study of the non-planar response motions of a circular cantilever beam subject to base harmonic excitation has been presented in this paper work. Theoretical research is conducted using two non-linear coupled integral-differential equations of motion. These equations contain cubic linearities due do curvature term and inertial term. A combination of the Galerkin procedure and the method of multiple scales are used to construct a first-order uniform expansion for the case of one-to-one resonance. The results show that the non-linear geometric terms are very important for the low-frequency modes of the first and second mode. The non-linear inertia terms are also important for the high-frequency modes. We present the quantitative and qualitative results for non-planar motions of the dynamic behavior.

  • This paper is concerned with the experiment of vibration isolation device whit can cope with heave, pitch and roll type vibrations. This new device consists of S-shaped piezoceramic actuators supporting each corner of the plate. Small piezoceramic sensors are located at the middle of each side. This paper also presents the development and the movement of the system. The active control technique was also developed to cope with base excitation. Experimental results show that vibrations can be reduced by the new device in the case of base excitation of harmonic type.

  • A probabilistic optimum design method of the base isolation system consisting of linear spring, viscous damper and frictional element is presented. For the probabilistic approach, the base excitation is assumed to be a stationary Gaussian filtered random process. For optimum design, the objective function and constraints are derived based on the stochastic responses of the system. As a numerical example, the optimum design problem of a three-story base isolated shear type structure is formulated and solved by the sequential quadratic programming method. As a result, the effects of variation of design variables such as parameters of the base isolation system and the mass of base on the objective function and constraints are investigated and the optimum parameters of the base isolation system under study are derived.

  • Reduction of microvibration is regarded as important in high-technology facilities with high precision equipments. In this paper, smart control technology is used to improve the microvibration control performance. Mr damper is used to make a smart base isolation system amd fuzzy logic control algorithm is employed to appropriately control the MR damper. In order to develop optimal fuzzy control algorithm, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is used in this study. As an excitation, a train-induced ground acceleration is used for time history analysis and three-story example building structure is employed. Microvibration control performance of passive and smart base isolation systems have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulation results show that the multi-objective genetic algorithm can provide optimal fuzzy logic controllers for smart base isolation system and the smart control system can effectively reduce microvibration of a high-technology facility subjected to train-induced excitation.

  • A series of tests was conducted for full-scale single-pylon asymmetric cable-stayed bridges using a system of multiple shaking tables. The 2-span bridge length was 28 m, and the pylon height was 10.2 m. 4 different base conditions were considered: the fixed condition, RB (rubber bearings), LRB (lead rubber bearings), and HDRB (high damping rubber bearings). Based on investigation of the seismic response, the accelerations and displacements in the axial direction of the isolated bridge were increased compared to non-isolated case. However, the strain of the pylon was decreased, because the major mode of the structure was changed to translation for the axial direction due to the dynamic mass. The response of the cable bridge could differ from the desired response according to the locations and characteristics of the seismic isolator. Therefore, caution is required in the design and prediction in regard to the location and behavior of the seismic isolator.

A Study on Base Isolation Performance of Magneto-Sensitive Rubbers (자기민감 고무를 이용한 구조물의 면진성능 연구)

  • Recently, as large structures become lighter and more flexible, the necessity of structural control for reducing excessive displacement and acceleration due to seismic excitation is increased. As a means to minimize seismic damages, various base isolation systems are adopted or considered for adoption. In this study, a base isolation system using Magneto-Sensitive(MS) rubbers is proposed and shown to effectively protect structures against earthquakes. The MS Rubber is a class of smart controllable materials whose mechanical properties change instantly by the application of a magnetic field To demonstrate the advantages of this approach, the MS Rubber isolation system is compared to Lead-Rubber Bearing(LRB) isolation systems and judged based on computed responses to several historical earthquakes. The MS Rubber isolation system is shown to achieve notable decreases in base drifts over comparable passive systems with no accompanying increase in base shears or in accelerations imparted to the superstructure.

  • Microvibration problem of high-technology facilities, such as semi-conductor plants and TFT-LCD plants, has been considered as important factors that affects the performance of products and thus it is regarded as important in facilities with high precision equipments. In this paper, various base isolation control systems are used to investigate their microvibration control performance. To this end, train-induced ground acceleration is used for time history analysis and three-story example building structure is employed. Microvibration control performance of passive and smart base isolation systems have been investigated in this study. Based on numerical simulation results, it has been verified that smart base isolation system can control microvibration of a high-technology facility subjected to train-induced excitation.

Real-time hybrid simulation of smart base-isolated raised floor systems for high-tech industry

  • Adopting sloped rolling-type isolation devices underneath a raised floor system has been proved as one of the most effective approaches to mitigate seismic responses of the protected equipment installed above. However, pounding against surrounding walls or other obstructions may occur if such a base-isolated raised floor system is subjected to long-period excitation, leading to adverse effects or even more severe damage. In this study, real-time hybrid simulation (RTHS) is adopted to assess the control performance of a smart base-isolated raised floor system as it is an efficient and cost-effective experimental method. It is composed of multiple sloped rolling-type isolation devices, a rigid steel platen, four magnetorheological (MR) dampers, and protected high-tech equipment. One of the MR dampers is physically tested in the laboratory while the remainders are numerically simulated. In order to consider the effect of input excitation characteristics on the isolation performance, the smart base-isolated raised floor system is assumed to be located at the roof of a building and the ground level. Four control algorithms are designed for the MR dampers including passive-on, switching, modified switching, and fuzzy logic control. Six artificial spectrum-compatible input excitations and three slope angles of the isolation devices are considered in the RTHS. Experimental results demonstrate that the incorporation of semi-active control into a base-isolated raised floor system is effective and feasible in practice for high-tech industry.

  • This paper presents an analytical evaluation of the effect of motion on seismic responses of base isolated low-level building and experimental studies to evaluate isolation performances of a rubber bearing. Dynamic responses induced by earthquake were evaluated by response analyses, taking the rubber bearing of the base isolation devices into account. In the experiment, vibration tests were carried out using a model for rubber bearings as isolation devices against earthquake in order to investigate the isolation performances of the rubber bearings. Several kinds of rubber bearing for base isolated low-level building against earthquake are examined. As a result, it is shown that the effect of the motion on the response of the building and the base response is well controlled from a seismic design standpoint.
