  • Three species of the genus Dohrniphora, viz., D. cornuta, D. malaysiae, and D. prescherweberae were newly recorded from Korea. These newly recorded species can be easily identified by the characteristic that inner face of male hind femur equipped with a group of peg-like stout setae on basal sensory area. Peg-like setae are arranged perpendicularly in D. cornuta whereas linear in D. malaysiae and somewhat arched in D. prescherweberae. Also, concave area near the peg-like setae is also well developed in male which is smooth in D. cornuta, on the other hand, there is well developed distal carina in D. malaysiae and with groups of microtrichia in D. prescherweberae. In this study, detailed descriptions with photographs of three newly recorded species and a key to males of all Korean Dohrniphora species are provided.

  • It has been well known that the renal cortical blood flow rate was much higher than that of the medulla and the renal blood flow distribution was affected by hemorrhage, volume expansion or salt-loading. The existance of the heterogeneities of glomerular filtration rate and nephron has also been reported. In order to understand the regulations and physiological roles of the heterogeneities, studies on the intrarenal renin-angiotensin system have been focused. Although it is well known that the granularity of iuxtaglomerular cells and renal renin content are more marked in superficial than in the deep glomeruli, their physiological significance is not quite clear. This study was therefore undertaken to clarify changes in renin response and isoelectric ronin profile to TMB-8 in outer, mid and inner cotices of normotensive and hypertensive rats. The basal rate of renin release was highest in outer cortex of Sprague-Dawley rat (SDR), Wistar rat (WR) and spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR). The basal renin release from outer and inner cortex of SHR was significantly lower than that from those of SDR. The reponse of renin release to TM8-8 was highest in mid cortex and the increase of renin release in response to TMB-8 from inner cortex of SDR was significantly higher than that in SHR. In dehydrated rats, the basal renin release from renal cortical slices of SDR was increased but that from WR and SHR was not. The response of renin release to TMB-8 from mid and inner cortex of dehydrated WR tended to increase. In dehyrated SHR, increase of renin release from inner cortex was significantly higher than that in euhydrated SHR. No significant differences in the isoelectric renin profile were found both in different cortical areas and strains. In dehydrated rats, the percentage of renin form 2 was decreased and those of renin form 5 and 6 were increased. These results suggest that the heterogeneity of renin release from cortical area of euhydrated and dehydrated rats in response to TMB-8 may be related to the changes of renal blood flow and/or calcium metabolism in cortical area. These data also suggest that the renin forms with different isoelectric points may have an physiological significance.

  • A single injection of cadmium chloride (3.75 mg/kg) was made into the peritoneal cavities of albino rats. The cortices of kidney were obtained from the experimental animals at 3 hr., 6 hr., 12 hr., 24 hr. and 36 hr. after administration of cadmium chloride, respectively. The specimens of each experimental animal were prefixed in 2% glutaraldehyde-4% paraformaldehyde solution for $2{\sim}4$ hours, and these specimens were post-fixed in 1% osmic acid. After fixation, the specimens were dehydrated with alcohol and acetate and embedded in Epon 812. Ultrathin sections, $600{\sim}800{\AA}$ thickness were made and stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate. And all the preparations were observed with Hitachi-600 transmission electron microscope. The results obtained were as follows: 1. The main changes in ultrastructures of the glomeruli observed at 3 hr. after cadmium chloride administration include loss of filtration slit and fenestrae of capillary endothelium that was resulted from thickings of the basal lamina and fusion of pedicels of the podocytes. At 12 hr. after cadmium chloride administration the Bowman's capsules were mostly filled with abnormally thickened and fused pedicels. After 24 hr. however, the only recognized change was loss of fenestrae of the capillary endothelium. And the ultrastructure of the glomeruli were almost normal in 36 hr. after cadmium chloride treatment. 2. At 3 hr. after treatment with cadmium chloride, in the renal tubular cells the vesicles and vacuoles increased in number at the apical portion, of the tubular epithelial cells, the basal infoldings were reduced and the basal lamina was thickened. After 12 hr., a number of phagosomes appeared at the apical portion and the cisternae of rough endoplasmic reticulum were swollen. At 24 hr. after cadmium chloride administration irregularly shaped mitochondria were observed in the apical area, and mitochondria with swollen cristae were found at the basal portion. And after 36 hr. The ultrastructures of the epithelial cells appeared almost normal except for a moderate increase in the number of vesicles and vacuoles. Consequently it is suggested that in albino rats, cadmium chloride induces acute reversible degenerative changes in the glomeruli as well as in the epithelial cells of the proximal convoluted tubules.

  • Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome is an ecto-mesodermal polydysplasia with numerous manifestations that affect multiple organs. The syndrome is an autosomal dominant inherited, with a high penetration and visible expression. The syndrome is characterized by a series of associated anomalies such as cutaneous, dentofacial, skeletal, ophthalmologic, neurological, and genital anomalies. Generally, the jaw cysts are multiple odontogenic keratocysts, affecting any area of maxilla and mandible. Multiple odontogenic keratocysts of this syndrome are more recurrent than the keratocysts of non-syndrome, thus they are treated aggressively for complete removal. We report a case of multiple jaw cysts associated with nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. In clinical and radiological examinations, frontal bossing, hypertelorism, mild mental retardation and two odontogenic keratocysts in both the maxilla and mandible were observed. Two cysts were treated by marsupialization. For the management of eruption of unerupted teeth, periodic recall check and orthodontic treatment are required.

  • An exploratory study was conducted in Juri Forest Range-2, a proposed biodiversity conservation area of Bangladesh to explore the present growing stock of tree, regeneration condition and status of non-timber forest products (NTFPs). This conservation area contains both natural and artificial plantation was selected by using multistage random sampling method. For determination of plot size and sampling methods, the quadrate size ($10m{\times}10m$) for tree stock measurement, ($2m{\times}2m$) for regeneration survey, ($20m{\times}20m$) for NTFPs survey was determined. Regarding tree stock survey, 14 species under eight families were found where Tectona grandis shows average number of stem/ha was 624 and basal area/ha was (10.36 $m^2/ha$) followed by Acacia auriculiformis (0.2 $m^2/ha$ and 637 stem/ha), Gmelina arborea (0.2 $m^2/ha$ and 600 stem/ha). In regeneration survey, 14 species were found belonging to 9 families where Alstonia scholaris shows highest (3,750) seedling per hectare. Regarding NTFPs, bamboo and cane are the most common resources. In last ten years, the total timber output was 1,28,596.14 cubic feet and total amount of revenue was 4,64,434 US$. The vacant area is 1,335.5 acre which contains 14% of total area. If this vacant area is planted with suitable species and take proper steps for appropriate management of this species it will be a good biologically diversified area.

  • This study was conducted to provide basic information on the management of natural deciduous forests by presenting suitable stand density over time for natural deciduous forests in Pyungchang Area. The stand density index(SDI) for the sampling point was also computed. The cutting scenarios were adopted by considering the SDI estimated in the sampling point. And then, simulation cutting was enforced to the stand. Cutting scenarios consisted of three cutting levels, with the period of 5 years where each suitable cutting level of selection system will not have the SDI over the maximum SDI throughout 30 years and consider harvest after 30 years. As a result of the simulation cutting, it was found that removing 12% and 14% of basal area per each time kept proper stand density while removing 10% exceed to the adequate basis. From an economic point of view, it was concluded that removal 12% of basal area would be the most suit cutting level in selection system.

  • This study was undertaken to suggest a Pinus densiflora community planting model in the central cool temperate zone of Korea and nearby areas. For the purpose of this study, we surveyed various DBH classes of the P. densiflora community in Dangjin-gun, Choongchungnam-do. We surveyed the size of entire individuals in the 92 plots as well as surveyed the location of individuals in each tree layer and sub-tree layer(1/100 scale) of 44 plots using a quadrant method from young to old communities. As a result of analysis, the tree layer was growing well but the basal areas of the subtree layer were less than 10% compared with the tree-layer. This indicates the subtree layer is not in general growing well in the P. densiflora community. There were no significant patterns in the shrub layer. A P. densiflora community planting would consist of a tree layer and a shrub layer and the finding of growth patterns of the tree layer is significant. In order to make a model of the shrub layer, an additionally survey of another shrub layer is needed in a nearby planting area. Both regression models, 1) between tree layer DBHs and individuals per unit area, and 2) between individuals per unit area and shortest distances of individuals, can yield much information through study.

  • The valley forests at Baraebong area, Jirisan National Park were studied to investigate forest structure of tree, subtree and shrub layers in relation to aspect and altitude of the slope. Density and basal area of the tree layer in the north-facing slope were greater than those in the south-facing slope. As elevation increased, basal area of the tree layer decreased in north-facing slope. The impotance percentage of Quercus mongolica increased with increasing elevation while those of Quercus serrata and Pinus densiflora decreased. Species diversity of the north-facing slope was 1.307 and that of the south-facing slope was 1.114. There was a tendency that number of species, species diversity and evenness decreased with increasing elevation. The result of cluster analysis for the tree and subtree layer indicated that the studied forests were classified into Quercus senrraa-broad-leaved tree species community at the low and middle elevation belts of the south-facing slope, Quercus mongolika-broad-leaved tree species community at the high elevation belt of the south-facing slope, the middle and high elevation belts of the north-facing slope and top area, and Pinus densiflora-Quercus mangolica community at the low elevation belt of the north-facing slope. There were significantly positive correlations in the importance percentages among Carpinus laxiflora, Quercus serrata, Styrax obassica and Linden obtuiloba, and among Castanea crenata, Rhodndendron schippen-bachii and Vibntnum erosum.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes understory vegetation composition (shrub and herb layers) in Mt. Gyebang as a northern-temperate deciduous broadleaf forest. Tracheophytes were 146 taxa, consisting 56 families, 93 genera, 124 species, 17 varieties, 3 forma, 2 sub-species and 1 unknown taxa in research subject area. As species area curve analysis, herbaceous layer and shrub species have been decreased over time. As a result of Mantel-test, basal area of upper layer affects to understory vegetation change (p<0.0001). Mean importance value was dominated Lindera obtusiloba (21.585%), Rhododendron schlippenbachii (19.774%) in the shrub layer, identified Sasa borealis (14.082%) and Lindera obtusiloba (7.921%) in the herb layer. According to NMS analysis of shrub layer, Species characterized by strong correlation have been reduced as time goes by. And it reports different species as an increasing in basal area of the upper layer. Herb layer plots of the NMS analysis, Rhododendron schlippenbachii and Rhododendron mucronulatum consistently were affected in shrub layer. In consequence of MRPP-test for changes in vegetation composition, It was analyzed that there are no significant differences for vegetation composition changes on shrub layer in 5-10 years. As a changes of vegetation composition on herb layer were analyzed significantly, composition change of herb layer species was larger than shrub layer species in understory vegetation.

  • The ultrastructure of small arterioles and capillaries in the lumbrical muscles of rat digits were studied by electron microscopy and following results were obtained. 1. The diameter of small arterioles of rat digits were $12\sim20{\mu}m$, and it was relatively smaller than human $(30\sim35{\mu}m)$. 2. All the endothelial cells of small arterioles and capillaries in the lumbrical muscles of rat digits were continuous type, and they had typical morphological characteristics of continuous endothelial cells : numerous cytoplasmic pinocytic vesicles and many tight junctions between the endothelial cells. 3. In the small arterioles subendothelial layers were irregularly spaced beneath the basal lamina, and membrane to membrane contacts were found between the endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. 4. Pericytes were often found nearby capillary endothelium, and their cytoplasmic processes surrounded part of endothelial cells. They were enclosed by basal lamina. 5. Smooth muscle cells in tunica media of small arterioles were only one layered, that is, they were terminal arterioles. Sarcoplasm of smooth muscle cell was divided to 2 areas; homogeneous or filamentous area and non-homogeneous perinuclear area. 6. The tunica adventitia contained fibroblasts with extremely attenuated cytoplasmic processes and collagen fibirls.
