Wind tunnel tests on flow fields of full-scale railway wind barriers

  • The present study provides a deeper understanding of the flow fields of a full-scale railway wind barriers by means of a wind tunnel test. First, the drag forces of the three wind barriers were measured using a force sensor, and the drag force coefficients were compared with a similar scale model. On this basis, the mean wind velocity and turbulence upwind and downwind of the wind barriers were measured. The effects of pore size and opening forms of the wind barrier were discussed. The results show that the test of the scaled wind barrier model may be unsafe, and it is suitable to adopt the full-scale wind barrier model. The pore size and the opening forms of wind barriers have a slight influence on the flow fields upwind of the wind barrier but have some influences on the flow fields and power spectra downwind of the wind barrier. The smaller pore size generates a lower turbulence density and value of the power spectrum near the wind barrier, and the porous wind barriers clearly provide better shelter than the bar-type wind barriers.

방음벽 안전을 위한 기준 조사 및 분석 (Investigation and Analysis of Regulations for the Safety of the Noise Barrier)

  • For the noise reduction measures in a construction field or near the traffic line receiver is often the most economic measure in order to exclude the propagated sound. The dimension of the barrier is decided by the noise and construction design, and the constructive quality of a soundproof panel shall be secured in accordance with KS F4770 to guarantee the safety of sound barriers. In this paper the problems included in the KS F4770-1 that is the regulation for the metallic sound barrier of the absorption type are identified and it is suggested what to be corrected or improved. Through a series of the analyses, conclusions were reached that it is required to improve test methods in KS F4770-1 as well as to break down test loads for building more cost-effective sound barrier.

어독성 실험에 따른 방근재 친환경 특성 분석 (Analyses on Environment-friendliness of Root Barrier Materials based on Fish Toxicity Test)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of environment-friendliness of Root Barrier materials based on comprehensive experiments on harmfulness of Root Barrier materials and fish toxicity of Oryzias latipes mortality to verify eco-toxicity of each method of construction and Root Barrier material, which are to be applied by taking eco-toxicity into account when building ecological flows in upper areas on natural and artificial grounds. As a result, the following conclusions have been reached in this study: 1. In regard of the harmfulness analyzed, each material showed a different result of analytical value in each lab tank. Compared to lab tank, pH (la), DO (lb), T-N (VI) and T-coli (la) were in the same grade, but COD, SS, T-P and F-coli were less than that of control, respectively increased or decreased by material were analyzed. 2. In the experiment of fish toxicity, Barrier sheet was found to have 66.7% of fish mortality, indicating strong fish toxicity. Synthetic rubber system root barrier sheet (20.0%) was analyzed to have medium fish toxicity, while Synthetic resin system root barrier-waterproof sheet (3.3%), Synthetic rubber system membrane root barrier sheet (3.3%) and Synthetic resin system root barrier sheet (0.0%) showed relatively lower mortality and fish toxicity. To sum up such results as found in the experiment mentioned so far, the values of harmfulness and root penetration resistance analyzed were different in each lab tank, but there was absolutely little correlation with the mortality gained from the experiment on fish toxicity. In the experiment of fish toxicity, environment-friendly root barrier materials were analyzed, and it was found that Synthetic resin system root barrier sheet, Synthetic resin system root barrier waterproof sheet and Synthetic rubber system membrane root barrier sheet are highly environment-friendly. In contrast, Synthetic rubber system root barrier sheet was found to have medium-level environment-friendliness. Also, Barrier sheet was analyzed to have low environment-friendliness.

  • In this paper, barrier panels against falling stones have been studied experimentally with various specimens. Test results show that stiffened barrier panels show more sufficient capacity than unstiffened barrier. Each type barrier panel can be used for various situations. New barrier panel is good for increasing strength and improving environment and maintaining cost down.

Aerodynamic parameters selection and windbreak mechanism of wind barrier for high-speed railway bridge

  • To investigate the optimal aerodynamic parameters of wind barriers for the T-beam of high-speed railway (HSR) bridge and the wind field of the wind barrier-train-bridge system, the three-component forces of the system and the wind pressure on the vehicle surface were tested and analyzed through the sectional model wind test. The effects of wind velocity, with/without wind barrier, the height of wind barrier, and the air permeability of the wind barrier on the aerodynamic characteristics of the train-bridge system are discussed. Additionally, a CFD numerical model is constructed to evaluate the wind environment of the bridge surface with/without the wind barrier, and the impact of wind barrier on the running safety of vehicles are analyzed. Comprehensively considering the running safety of the train and the wind-resistant stability of the bridge, it is more appropriate to set the wind barrier height H as 3.5 m and the porosity 𝛽 as 30% respectively.

  • The existing evaluation of root barrier resistance takes at least two years as an evaluation based on plant growth, and it is difficult to determine early performance in the process of quality control in the field. In this study, thus, the direction of the root barrier resistance evaluation system was presented by considering the construction specifications and design standards for root barrier design. As a result, it was necessary to establish a test method for reproducing simple and consistent test results for evaluating the durability of root barrier materials.

Greenhouse Test Results for Two Years of Sheet shaped Root Barrier Materials Apply to Green Roof System for Sustainable Building Construction

  • Recently, As a part of urban forestation, the introductions of green roofs into public projects has been actively driven. Supported by this policy, the sizes of domestic green roof related markets have been rapidly expanding and many types of root barrier materials developed in Korea or abroad are being commercially distributed. In this study, root barrier tests were conducted over two years with nine types of sheet type waterproof materials that are the most commonly used as root barrier layers in green roof systems. The test conditions prepared considered the climates, natural features and vegetation in Korea and the results and related root barrier performance were verified. From the results of this study, the necessity to improve the joint part of root barrier sheets and forming methods has been identified and a measure to improve domestic root barrier testing methods was proposed.

국내 콘크리트 방호벽의 등급 고찰 (Test Level of Domestic Concrete Barrier)

  • 국내 건설교통부 규정에서는 방호울타리(방호벽 및 중앙분리대)의 등급을 SB1${\sim}$SB7로 나누고 각 등급이 수용해야 할 충돌차량의 중량, 속도 및 각도를 명시하고 있다. 한편, 국내의 콘크리트 방호울타리에는 제원에 따라 형식-1, 형식-2 등의 한국도로공사 표준도들이 널리 사용되고 있다. 각 방호울타리 형식에 대응되는 등급을 규명하기 위한 해석 및 실험적 연구가 수행되어져 왔으나, 아직까지 명확한 기준이 확립되었다고 보기는 어렵다. 이 연구에서는 대표적으로 방호벽 형식-2에 해당하는 등급을 정적 실험을 통하여 규명해 보고자 하였다. 정적 실험시의 재하 형태와 등급 판정기준이 되는 충돌하중은 국내의 각 등급과 유사하게 대응되는 AASHTO LRFD의 시험 등급을 참조하였다. 실험 결과에 의하면 형식-2는 SB5 등급을 만족하고 있는 반면 SB6 등급에 대한 만족여부는 다소 명확치 않은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 기존의 해석적인 연구와 차이가 있으므로 추가적인 연구를 요하는 사항이다. 방호벽의 성능 및 해당등급을 평가하기 위한 기존의 차량충돌실험 및 해석에 부가하여, 비교적 정밀한 거동 계측이 가능하고 극한 상태까지 재하 할 수 있는 정적 실험을 통한 평가를 위해서는 국내 기준의 각 등급별로 충돌하중 및 재하방법을 구체적으로 명시하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단된다.

Strength and structural barrier function of steel channel-reinforced concrete composite slabs

  • This paper reports on the development of a new composite slab system that uses a large- lipped steel channel and reinforced concrete. The advantages of this new system are that it serves as both a structural unit and an unsupported form and it has a secondary structural barrier function. A concrete pouring test was carried out for the large-lipped steel channel. Full-scale tests were carried out to assess the flexural strength-deformation characteristics and structural mechanics of the composite slab. The barrier mechanics of the steel channel concrete element (referred to as the SC subunit) of the composite slab are examined. The test results indicate that the new composite slab has excellent strength, ductility characteristics, and a structural barrier function in its SC subunit that is highly effective against severe loading.
