Since 2007, Insurance Institute of Highway Safety(IIHS) has conducted the new bumper test using bumper barrier to estimate the repair cost of impacted vehicle. In this study, for the front body FE model of a medium size passenger car analyzes were carried out to optimize the shape of backbeam center reinforcement bracket. First, overlap effect was examined with changing the overlap magnitude and spot welds were added along the backbeam center line for reducing the section shear deformation. Next, for an overlap model design parameter study was performed for the bracket. Thickness effect was examined and an inner reinforcement was added to the bracket. Also, the lower part of bracket was deleted and additionally the bracket length was extended. The results were discussed in terms of backbeam backward deflection, barrier backstop intrusion and weight. Compared with the current design, the final model showed 44.1% bracket weight reduction with 30.0% decrease of backbeam deflection.

PURPOSES : The impact performance of flexible barrier system such as structural response, vehicular motion and occupant safety vary depending on the impact point. Thus, to properly evaluate the performance of a flexible barrier system, impact should be made to a point which will lead to the worst possible results. This point is called the Critical Impact Point (CIP). This paper presents the way to determine the CIP for a SB2 class flexible barrier system which is consisted of Thrie-Beam rail and circular hollow tube post of 2m span. METHODS: Barrier VII simulations were made for impact points; Case 1 at a post, Case 2 at 1/3 span downstream from a post, Case 3 at middle of the span, Case 4 at 2/3 span downstream from a post. For the structural performance (deflections), impact simulation of 8000kg-65km/h-15degree was used, and for vehicle motion and occupant safety, simulation of 1300kg-80km/h-20degree impact was made and analysed. RESULTS: Case 1 gave the largest dynamic deflection of 75.72cm and also gave the largest snag value of 44.3cm. Occupant safety and exit angle of the vehicle after the impact were not sensitive to the impact point and were all below the allowable limit. CONCLUSIONS : For the SB2 class flexible barrier system's CIP can be regarded as a post which is sufficiently away from the end of Length of Need in order to avoid the end-effect of the barrier system. It can be more economic in the long run because the normal concrete pavement material is likely to cost more due to higher probability of maintenance and repair and higher social cost due to traffic accident, etc.

This study has been started for the development of a refined live load distribution formula that has safety and precision toward I type prestressed concrete girder bridge. This type of bridge is mainly applied to short span bridges that are $25{\sim}40m$ in length. Based on various structure analysis models that are currently being applied as preceding studies for the development of live load distribution method. an analysis of flexural stiffness ratio for barrier and diaphragm has been performed. As the result of parametric analysis for the changes in flexural stiffness ratio, the effect of barrier on load distribution showed as insignificant in all structural analysis models while analyzing the deflection distribution. Also. the deflection distribution of the models with stiffness of 25% in which the diaphragm eccentricity is accounted for as same as the models with stiffness of 100% in which the diaphragm eccentricity is unaccounted for. This results are verified through the comparison with a experimental data.
Barrier VII program is normally used for the design of flexible barrier, but if modelled properly it can be used for the analysis of vehicle impact to small sign posts. In this paper sign post is shown to be modelled as flexible barrier by combining beam and column elements at each beam node. Simulations with the Barrier VII program have been made for 7 impact cases composed of sign posts of circular and H section with rigidly connected support and breakaway support system. The impact speed used for the simulation ranged from 30km/h to 110km/h. The study shows that in the vehicle impacts to a circular sign post with high speed, the large deflection and high inertia force causes the sign plate to hit the windshield leading to a hazard to the occupants. It is also shown that impact to H section post results in small deflection of the post and abrupt velocity change and high deceleration of the impact vehicle causing severe damage to both the vehicle and occupants. Simulation study also shows that breakaway support system eliminates the potential danger of the vehicle impact to the rigidly connected small sign posts by reducing deflection of the post, abrupt change in velocity and deceleration level.

The nonlinear dynamic behaviors of guardrail established on the local or high way have been investigated using BARRIER Ⅶ program with respect to four design variables such as section type of beams and posts, impact angle, impact velocity and vehicle weight. Computer simulation programs are sophisticated analytical models for analyzing dynamic vehicle/barrier interactions and provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to full scale crash testing. This study has been focused on the structural adequacy, occupant risk, and vehicle trajectory. For this purpose, the maximum deflection and impact force have been calculated to design the clear zone and to analyze effect of impact attenuation. Also, the acceleration of vehicle and exit angle after collision have been computed to estimate the occupant risk. From this study, it is suggested that we should strengthen the design criteria of guradrail to prevent from disastrous traffic accidents.

In this study, the noise mapping simulation is executed to design an effective barrier reducing noise levels of a school site. The geographical features of the ambient site and the school buildings are modelled in detail in order to consider sound propagation, deflection, and absorption phenomena etc. The main sound source, sound power level of expressway, is estimated on the basis of measured noise levels at several points of the site. The noise mapping simulation is performed by using ENPro, environmental noise prediction program based on ISO 9613 to analysis the effectiveness of noise barrier. Consequently, the noise barrier is designed to meet an environmental noise standard and satisfy low cost and safety conditions.

Side collisions (or side crash) account for 51.6% of all car to car accidents occurred in 2010. It is necessary to analyze those vehicles' structure deformation and passengers' injuries in the side collisions. A moving barrier (950kg) is currently used in the KNCAP side impact test. However, in order to enhance a passengers' safety in the side collisions, we introduce an AE-MDB (1500kg) which provides more severe conditions for this test. In this study, the test results using both barriers are compared and analyzed.
In order to predict the train noise propagation from a level railroad, this paper presents the model of train noise source and the prediction model based on the results by using the sound intensity method. The prediction model gives the effects of geometric attenuation, ground attenuation, and barrier attenuation of noise. There are several principal assumption in developing model: (a) the train noise is primarily rolling noise; (b) the rail head and wheels are in good condition; (c) the height of source is 10cm above track; (d) the directivity pattern of train noise sources is a dipole source. Calculated results based on this model are compared with available field data and good agreement has been obtained.

A new concept of membrane type LNG CCS was proposed. Also, its static behavior was numerically analyzed considering the interaction between primary and secondary barrier together with securing device. Hull deflection was taken into account as an external load, together with temperature distribution across the barriers. The suggested numerical model considers both sliding and contact between the two mating surfaces of both the primary and secondary barrier, and anisotropic material behavior of plywood, R-PUF was also taken into account. Furthermore, detailed local strength was evaluated for the securing device, which is arranged between two barriers to hold the primary barrier. It was confirmed through the numerical analysis that the new concept of membrane type CCS was structurally safe under static loading condition and securing concept was structurally reliable.

Impact of Automotive GMT(Glassfiber reinforced Mat Thermoplastic) Bumper for '5Mhp Barrier Test'was simulated using ls-dyna. The FE model consists of foam which is energy absorber, bumper beam and stay etc. Bumper intrusion and deflection was compared with the experimental results. Effects of uncertainty of material property and deviation of impact velocity were considered and results were compared with those of base design. Effects of number of integration points through th thickness was also investigated.
