Purpose: This study aimed to provide the basic data for dental barrel finishing by observing the abrasiveness of the metal body according to the time of the barrel finishing. Methods: This study included three types of Co-Cr alloys. The specimens were manufactured by casting method using 10-mm diameter wax spheres (n=10). The cast alloys were polished for 60 minutes at intervals of 5 minutes in barrel finishing. The weight and volume of the specimens were measured, and the rate of change was calculated. The data obtained from the three groups (α=0.05) were compared and analyzed using one-way ANOVA. Results: As a result, the overall volume and weight of the group decreased after grinding compared with the control group. Conclusion: When grinding dental barrel finishing, no difference was observed in the processing rate depending on the type of alloy and the processing rate of the alloy body is within 30 minutes; hence, dental barrel finishing can be effectively used for grinding.
Purpose: This study aimed to produce resin prosthetics using a dental barrel finishing machine. For dental resin grinding, the ingredients of the barrel finishing media were analyzed, and surface residues of the resin were observed. Methods: Two types of barrel finishing media for dental resin grinding were tested. Specimens were made from thermal polymerized, auto polymerized, and photopolymerized resins. Finishing media were analyzed through energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) component analysis and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) component analysis. Then, the prepared specimen was barrel finished for 25 minutes using two types of barrel finishing media, and scanning electron microscope was photographed to observe the surface residues. Results: As a result of EDS component analysis, both types of finishing media were analyzed for the components of C, O, Zr and Al elements, and industry media (IM) was further analyzed for the components of Si and Mg elements. In the ICP-OES component analysis, Cd and As, which are harmful elements, were detected in IM, and no harmful elements were detected in manufacturing media (MM). Because of observation of surface residues, no residues were observed in the three types of resin specimens that were barrel finished with two types of finishing media. Conclusion: Surface residue wasn't observed on the specimens polished using two types of finishing media. However, in IM, Cd and As, which are harmful elements, were detected, making it inappropriate for clinical use. In MM, harmful elements were not detected; therefore, clinical use will be possible.
Purpose: This study aimed to produce resin prosthetics using a dental automatic barrel finishing. Surface roughness and surface topography of resins were observed according to the grinding time of the dental automatic barrel finishing. Methods: This study was performed with thermopolymer, autopolymer, and photopolymer resins. The dimensions of the specimen were 10×10×2 mm. Each specimen was polymerized according to the manufacturer's instructions. The polymerized resin was honed for 30 minutes at 5-min intervals in a dental automatic barrel finishing. The specimen was observed using a three-dimensional (3D) optical microscope, and the surface roughness was measured. Results: After the polishing with the dental automatic barrel finishing, the heat-cured (HC) specimen showed the highest and lowest values of Ra after 10 and 15 minutes, respectively. The self-cured (SC) specimen showed the highest and lowest values of Ra after 10 and 25 minutes, respectively. Finally, the 3D specimen showed the highest and lowest values of Ra after 5 and 20 minutes, respectively. Conclusion: After measuring the surface roughness of the three types of resins according to the grinding time of the dental automatic barrel finishing, the lowest Ra values for the HC, SC, and 3D specimens were measured after 15, 25, and 20 minutes, respectively. Therefore, we concluded that a limit on the grinding time of the resin using a dental automatic barrel finishing is needed.
Purpose: This study aimed to confirm the applicability of gloss polishing using automatic barrel finishing with respect to three-dimensional (3D)-printed resin specimens. The surface roughness and grinding angle of the 3D-printed resin specimens were observed with respect to gloss polishing time using automatic dental barrel finishing. Methods: Herein, experiments were conducted on four types of 3D-printed resin specimens. The specimens, with a thickness of 100 ㎛ each, were printed using a 3D printer. Subsequently, light polymerization was performed on these specimens for 15 min. Post this surface treatment, the specimens underwent grinding for 25 min. This process was followed by gloss polishing at 5-min intervals for up to 25 min using automatic dental barrel finishing. The specimens were photographed using a 3D optical microscope, and their surface roughness and grinding angle were measured. Results: The Ra (centerline average roughness) values of all the specimens, except for crown & bridge 10 group and those in the control group that were not polished using automatic barrel finishing, were <0.2 ㎛. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used. Conclusion: Gloss polishing of 3D-printed resin can be realized using automatic dental barrel finishing. However, polishing time needs to be controlled to realize the desired surface roughness and grinding amount considering the hardness of the resin used.

In centrifugal barrel finishing, it is easy to establish the optimum working conditions for different workpieces. As they are adjusted in trial and error practically, production efficiency and quality are some- times low In the present paper, firstly, installation of the barrel finishing machine, finishing purpose and working conditions have been analyzed in order to eliminate the defects of the finished surface. Secondly, on the basis of this result, quantity of the water and selection of the media and the compound, etc. have been investigated. As a result, production efficiency and quality have been improved under the specified optimum working conditions. In addition, durability of the media and the compound has been tested experimentally. As a result, it was found that the expected life of the media is about 85 hrs and that of the compound is about 5 hrs. Besides high quality control has been achieved by newly proposed inspection at regular intervals.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to observe the surface roughness and surface topography of cobalt-chrome (Co-Cr) alloys with grinding time in dental barrel finishing. Methods: This study involved two types of Co-Cr alloys. Specimens were manufactured with the dimensions 10×10×2 mm. Each specimen was cast according to the manufacturer's instructions. The cast alloys were polished for 35 minutes at intervals of five minutes in an automatic barrel finishing. Specimens were imaged with a three-dimensional optical microscope to measure surface roughness. Results: BC specimens and GM specimens had the highest roughness (Ra) values in the ungrained control group, and the lowest Ra values were measured 20 minutes after grinding. Conclusion: The best conditions for grinding Co-Cr alloy using a dental barrel finishing were a weight ratio of polishing media, water, and compound of 150 g:200 g:5 g, and a rotation speed of 450 rpm. Grinding time to obtain appropriate surface roughness should be limited to 15 to 30 minutes.

Currently the technology of surface finishing is highly demanded in a wide range of industries. And many kinds of surface finishing technologies have been developed for each purpose. But it is still difficult to make a fine surface for the part which has three dimensional geometry. Now most of these kinds of complex parts are polished by hand by well skilled workers, This hand work process is inefficient and the production cost is high. Therefore it is desirable to develop a new finishing technology to solve problem In this study a new device was developed and tested in various test conditions.

Commercially available magnetic barrel machines equipped with permanent magnets have certain limitations: work can only be finished effectively in limited areas of the container because permanent magnets are arranged two-dimensionally on the magnet disk. We overcame this problem by developing a new magnetic barrel machine equipped with a three-dimensional magnet arrangement. The effectiveness of the new machine has already been reported; this study improved the machine's polishing ability by changing the polarity of magnets on a magnet block. Polishing experiments confirmed the most effective arrangement of magnets on the magnet block. An alternating arrangement of north and south poles produced far superior polishing characteristics than a uniform arrangement of the same pole facing outward. Alternating polarity probably causes increased quantities of barrel media to work together. Finally, we introduced stronger permanent magnets to the magnet block, and found that the increased magnetic field also improved polishing ability.
Purpose: This study aimed to observed changes in the shape of dental barrels based on application time. Machinability measures the angle of alloy specimens. Polishing performance measures the surface roughness of alloy specimens. Methods: The dental barrel polishing equipment used in this study was a Snow Barrel (DK Mungyo). Three types of cobalt-chromium alloys for partial dentures were used as specimens (BC CAST R [BP]; Bukwang, Vera PDI [VP]; Aalbadent, and GM 800+ [GP]; Dentaurum). Specimens were prepared in the form of plates (10 mmx10 mmx2 mm). Dental barrel polishing was performed at 450 rpm for 60 minutes with intervals of 5 minutes. The processing angle was measured using a microscope (SZ61; Olympus). Results: For the angle measurement, the VPC specimen was measured at 78.64°, 36.00° for the VP60 specimen, 79.57° for the BP control (BPC) specimen, 28.07° for the BP60 specimen, 75.01° for the GPC specimen, and 39.92° for the GP60 specimen. For the surface roughness measurements, the average surface roughness of the VPC and VP15 specimens were 1.09 ㎛ and 0.26 ㎛, respectively. The average surface roughness of the BPC and BP20 specimens were 1.77 ㎛ and 0.29 ㎛, respectively. The average surface roughness of the GPC and GP15 specimens were 1.08 ㎛ and 0.27 ㎛. Conclusion: The results were excellent after about 20 minutes of dental barrel polishing conditions presented in this study.
This study proposes a sustainable bearing remanufacturing process using the ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) technique. The UNSM technique is a newly developed and sophisticated surface modification technique that can increase the mechanical properties and improve the friction and wear performance of materials. Taking advantage of the bearing manufacturing process is the most significant way of optimizing the life of a bearing. The proper maintenance and usage of repaired bearings can increase their life to be equal to or greater than that of new bearings. This paper discusses the restoration of certain mechanical properties of worn, damaged, and discarded bearings, and suggests a remanufacturing process for used bearings, which can impart them with a lifespan equivalent to that of new bearings. The most damaged part of the discarded bearings is the raceway, which is the site of accumulated fatigue. The existing polishing or barrel finishing processes can recover the accumulated fatigue only partially. Rolling contact fatigue tests performed on UNSM-treated new and used specimens polished after $4{\times}10^6$ cycles reveal that UNSM-treated new specimens exhibit the longest fatigue life compared to other specimens. This study verifies the proposed complete fatigue recovery process, which can increase the fatigue life of used bearings to a level greater than that of new bearings.
