  • BaTiO3 ceramics doped with 0.1 to 4.0 mol% Nb2O5 were prepared by conventional solid stage sintering process, so as to investigate the effect of the amount of Nb2O5 on the dielectric properties and complex impedance patterns of barium titanates. From the measurement of capacitance, we found that the dielectric constant of BaTiO3 samples with 1 mol% or more Nb2O5 remained approximately constant around room temperature with values higher than 2500. In this paper, the effect of impurity content as well as temperature on complex impedance patterns was discussed in detail. In particular, the grain and grain boundary behavior of samples which showed PTCR characteristics was discussed in terms of measuring temperature.

  • The optimal condition for minimal agglomeration of barium titanyl oxalate tetrahydrate, the precipitate on preparing barium titanate by oxalate process, was investigated. Burette-dropping and dual-nozzle-spraying were used as adding methods. pH of washing water for precipitates was changed, and sodium pyrophosphate solution, methanol, ethoanol, and acetone were used as washing agents for precipitates, as well as distilled water. Drying temperature was changed from $50^{\circ}C$ to $120^{\circ}C$. Spraying, methanol-washing, and drying at $60^{\circ}C$ showed the most dispersed distribution, Below $70^{\circ}C$, the crystalline phases were observed.

  • Thulium oxide-doped barium titanate ceramics for MLCCs with perovskite structure were prepared by a sintering process at $1320^{\circ}C$ for 2 h in a reduced atmosphere. The effect of $Tm_2O_3$ addition on dielectric property of barium titanate ceramics has been studied in terms of their microstructures. Moreover, the phase identification of the dielectric specimens was conducted to define the secondary phase (pyrochlore). The specimen doped with 1 mol% $Tm_2O_3$ exhibited the highest dielectric constant. However, the dielectric constants of specimens with more than 2 mol% $Tm_2O_3$ to $BaTiO_3$ were the lower values than that of 1 mol% doped one. The grain size and the formation of pyrochlore phase associated with the dielectric properties were examined through morphology development and the structural analysis. Furthermore, these data were compared with the property of the dielectric material doped with $Er_2O_3$. It could be concluded that the dielectric property of ceramic capacitors were attributed to the change of pyrochlore phase and the tetragonality of $BaTiO_3$ with doping.

  • Bodies whose compositions are in the ternary system BaCO3-TiO2-SnO2 containing from 5 to 90 mol % stannic oxide were prepared to improve the thermal characteristics of barium titanate dielectrics. Bodies having dielectric constant (K) of 2100 at 1 KHz, low negative temperature coefficients of 1500ppm up to about 9$0^{\circ}C$, Curie Temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$, and dissipation factor of 0.2-0.4% were obtained with addition of 15 mole % stannic oxide.

  • The electrical property and microstructure in $BaTiO_3$ ceramics doped rare-earth ions with intermediate ionic size ($Dy^{3+},Ho^{3+},Y^{3+}$) were investigated. Microstructures have been characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Incorporation of rare-earth ions to $BaTiO_3$ ceramics depended on their ionic radius sensitively. Compared to Ho and Y ions, Dy ions provide $BaTiO_3$ ceramics with the high rate of densification and well-developed shell formation, due to their high solubility in the $BaTiO_3$ lattice, but the microstructure of Dy doped $BaTiO_3$ ceramics is unstable at high temperature, because Dy ions could not play a role of grain growth inhibition, leading to diffuse into $BaTiO_3$ lattice continuously after completion of densification during sintering. Comparing electrical property and microstructure, it is shown that the reliability of capacitor improved by high shell ratio.

  • The degradation of barium titanate ceramics was studied under the high AC electric field. At 150$^{\circ}C$, life time was measured as a function of grain size, controlled by varying sintering time at 1375$^{\circ}C$ and electrical properties, such as AC conductivity, capacitance and dissipation factor, were measured during degradation process. The life time decreased as grain size increased in the range of 2.44-8.23$\mu\textrm{m}$. The AC conductivity was remained constant and increased suddenly at the last stage of degradation process. The capacitance was slowly decreased and the dissipation factor was slowly increased as the degradaton progressed.

  • The PTCR characteristics of (Ba0.8Pb0.2)TiO3 ceramics prepared by the molten salt sysnthesis (MSS) method have been investigated as a function of the amount of Nb2O5 dopant and KCl flux. When the weight ratio of KCl to raw material is 0.8, the resistivity at room temperature decreases with increasing amount of Nb dopant up to 0.6 atom%. It can be explained by compensation for electrons due to Nb+5 ion and holes due to K+ ion. The resistivity of (Ba0.8Pb0.2)(Ti0.994Nb0.006)O3 ceramics at room temperature decreases with increasing the ratio of KCl to raw material up to 0.6, and then increases. These results can be explained by the effect of K+ ion.

  • Undoped barium titanate ceramic samples with high density were produced by using both high purity hydro-thermally synthesized and oxalate-derived powders. Sintering temperature was varied in the temperature range 128$0^{\circ}C$-140$0^{\circ}C$ to control the average grain sizes of the samples. Electrical breakdown test was performed at two different temperature with 3$0^{\circ}C$(below Tc) and 15$0^{\circ}C$ (above Tc) for samples immersed in silicon oil bath using 60kV dc power supply. From the experimental results at below and above Curie temperature the grain size and thickness dependence of electrical breakdown strength for BaTiO3 ceramics was presented and breakdown behavior was also studied.

  • A current-voltage relation for Positive Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (PTCR) ceramic was derived and compared with the experimental data. The new current-voltage relation was developed based on Heywangs double Schottky barrier model and a bias distribution across the grain boundary. The voltage limitation V < 4${\Phi}$$\sub$b/ suggested by Heywang is no longer necessary in the new expression for the voltage dependence of the resistance. The pulsed voltages were applied to the PTCR ceramic specimen in order to avoid possible temperature variation during the measurement.

  • Commercially available PTCR (Postive Temperature Coefficient of Resistivity) ceramics which have low room temperature resistance, high PTC effect and temperature coefficient were prepared by La3+ doped semiconducting barium calcium titanate soild solutions. PTCR characteristics were remarkably improved by addition of AST (1/3 Al2O3$.$3/4SiO2$.$1/4TiO2) and MnCl2. That can be explained by formation of liquid phase during sintering and acceptor level on the intergranular layer. Resistivity anormaly increased with decreasing cooling rate. Optimum manufacturing conditions were cooling rate below 100$.$C/hr, Ca and Mn content of 4 mol% &, 0.09-0.12mol% respectively.
