  • A pulse driven atmospheric plasma jet controlled by external ballast capacitor is developed. Unlike the most commonly use DBD sources, the proposed device utilizes bare metal electrode. The discharge energy per pulse can precisely be determined by changing voltage and capacitance of the ballast capacitor. It is shown that the device can provide wide range of plasma, from stable glow mode to near arc state. Current-voltage waveforms, optical emission spectra and discharge images are investigated as a function of an injection energy. The OES shows that He and oxygen lines are increased as a function of the external ballast capacitor. Ozone and rotational temperature have similar tendency with a power consumption. The feeding gas is He and the applied DC voltage is from 400V to 800V when the gap distance is $500{\mu}m$.

  • Ultrathin atomic layer deposition (ALD) coatings were found to enhance the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Previous studies have demonstrated that $LiCoO_2$ cathode powders coated with metal oxides with thicknesses of $\sim100-1000{\AA}$ grown using wet chemical techniques improved LIB performance. In this study, $LiCoO_2$ powders were coated with conformal $Al_2O_3$ ALD films with thicknesses of only $\sim3-4{\AA}$ established using 2 ALD cycles. The coated $LiCoO_2$ powders exhibited a capacity retention of 89% after 120 charge-discharge cycles in the 3.3~4.5 V (vs. $Li/Li^+$) range. In contrast, the bare $LiCoO_2$ powders displayed only a 45% capacity retention. This dramatic improvement may result from the ultrathin $Al_2O_3$ ALD film acting to minimize Co dissolution or to reduce surface electrolyte reactions.

  • In this study, 2 wt% Cr-doped Ni thin films were deposited using DC sputtering on a bare Si substrate using a 4 inch target at room temperature. In order to obtain ultrathin films from Cr-doped Ni thin films with high electrical properties and uniform surface, the micro-structure and electrical properties were investigated as a function of deposition time. For all deposition times, the Cr-doped Ni thin films had low average resistivity and small surface roughness. However, the resistivity of the Cr-doped Ni thin films at various ranges showed large differences for deposition times below 90 s. From the results, 120 s is considered as the appropriate deposition time for Cr-doped Ni thin films to obtain the lowest resistivity, a low surface roughness, and a small difference of resistivity. The Cr-doped Ni thin films are prospective materials for microdevices as ultrathin film electrodes.

  • We report a simple, low cost, and reliable method for assembling a multi-walled nanotube (MWNT) to the end of a metal coated scanning probe microscopy (SPM) tip. By dropping the MWNT solution and applying an electric field between an SPM tip and an electrode, MWNTs which were dispersed into a dielectric solution were directly assembled onto the apex of the SPM tip due to the attraction by the dielectrophoretic force. The effective measurement of a MWNT -attached SPM tip was demonstrated by direct comparison with AFM images of a standard sample with a bare AFM tip.

  • This study investigates the photoelectrochemical behavior of STS304 steel with TiO2 thin films coating, applied by sol-gel mehod, for the purpose of cathodic photoprotection of the steel corrosion. One time TiO2-coated STS304 steel, adapted with two kinds of TiO2 sol solution, has the most dominant photopotential abilities, which was -200mV vs. SCE and -500mV vs. SCE under illumination with 40 W fluorescent lamp, respectively. That had yielded more negative values than the corrosion potential of the bare metal(-130mv vs.SCE). The bleaching of TCE was confirmed on TiO2-coated STS304 steel under UV-illumination with 20W Black-light. This Study concluded that Ti02-coated STS304 exhibited both a cathodic photoprotection effect against corrosion and a photocatalytic self-cleaning effect.

  • The enhancement of adhesion for Cu film on polycarbonate (PC) surface with the $Ar/O_2$ gas plasma treatment and dc-bias sputtering was studied. The plasma treatment with this reactive mixture changes the chemical property of PC surface into hydrophllic one, which is shown by the variation of contact angle with surface modification. The micro surface roughness that also gives the high adhesive environment is increased by the $Ar/O_2$ gas plasma treatment. These results were observed distinctly from the atomic force microscopy (AFM). The negative substrate dc-bias effect for the Cu adhesion on PC was also investifated. Accelerated $Ar^{+}$ lons in sheath area of anode bombard the bare surface of PC during initial stage of dc bias sputtering. PC substrate. therefore, has severe roughen and hydrophilic surface due to the physical etching process with more activated functional group. As dc-bias sputtering process proceeds, morphology of Cu film shows better step coverage and dense layer. The results of peel test show the evidence of superiority of bias sputtering for the adhesion between metal Cu and PC.C.

  • Vertically-aligned silicon nanostructure arrays (SNAs) have been drawing much attention due to their useful electrical properties, large surface area, and quantum confinement effect. SNAs are typically fabricated by chemical vapor deposition, reactive ion etching, or wet chemical etching. Recently, metal-assisted chemical etching process, which is relatively simple and cost-effective, in combination with nanosphere lithography was recently demonstrated for vertical SNA fabrication with controlled SNA diameters, lengths, and densities. However, this method exhibits limitations in terms of large-area preparation of unperiodic nanostructures and SNA geometry tuning independent of inter-structure separation. In this work, we introduced the layerby- layer deposition of polyelectrolytes for holding uniformly dispersed polystyrene beads as mask and demonstrated the fabrication of well-dispersed vertical SNAs with controlled geometric parameters on large substrates. Additionally, we present a new means of building in vitro neuronal networks using vertical nanowire arrays. Primary culture of rat hippocampal neurons were deposited on the bare and conducting polymer-coated SNAs and maintained for several weeks while their viability remains for several weeks. Combined with the recently-developed transfection method via nanowire internalization, the patterned vertical nanostructures will contribute to understanding how synaptic connectivity and site-specific perturbation will affect global neuronal network function in an extant in vitro neuronal circuit.

  • Electrocatalytic effects for the reduction of thionyl chloride in $LiAICI_4/SOCl_2$ electrolyte solution containing Schiff base M(II) (M; Co and Fe) complexes are evaluated by determining kinetic parameters with cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry at a glassy carbon electrode. The charge transfer process during the reduction of thionyl chloride is affected by the concentration of the catalyst. The catalytic effects are demonstrated from both a shift of the reduction potential for the thionyl chloride toward a more positive direction and an increase in peak currents. Catalytic effects are larger in thionyl chloride solutions containing the binuclear [M(II) $_2$ (TSBP)] complex rather than mononuclear [M(II)(BSDT)] complexes. Significant improvements in the cell performance have been noted in terms of both thermodynamics and activation energy for the thionyl chloride reduction. The activation energy calculated from the Arrhenius plots is 4.5-5.9 kcal/mole at bare glassy carbon electrodes. The activation energy calculated for the catalyst containing solution is 3.3-4.9 kcalmole, depending on whether the temperature is lowered or rasied.

  • As recent applications are requiring more CPUs for their performance, manycore systems have evolved. Since existing operating systems do not provide performance scalability in manycore systems, Azalea, a multi-kernel based system, has been developed for supporting performance scalability. Unikernel is a new operating system technology starting with the concept of a library OS. Applying unikernel to Azalea enables an improvement in performance. In this paper, we first analyze the current technology trends of unikernel, and then discuss the applications and effects of unikernel to Azalea. Azalea-unikernel was built in a single image consisting of libOS, runtime libraries, and an application, and executed with the desired number of cores and memory size in bare-metal. In particular, it supports source and binary compatibility such that existing linux binaries can be rebuilt and executed in Azalea-unikernel, and already built binaries can be run immediately without modification with a better performance. It not only achieves a performance enhancement, it is also a more secure OS for manycore systems.
