The main objective of this research is to find out the effect of Non-Performing Loan (NPL) of Nepalese conventional banks. The population of this study is major commercial banks in Nepal and the data obtained for this study was from the period 2015-2019. This research used secondary data and it is collected from each bank's annual report and GDP and Inflation taken from the World Bank database. The method used for data analysis in this study is multiple regression analysis. The study used NPL as a dependent variable and Return on Asset (ROA), Capital Adequacy Ratio (CAR), Bank Size, GDP growth, and Inflation as independent/explanatory variables. The result of this research shows that ROA, Bank Size, GDP, and Inflation have a significant effect on NPL but CAR does not have a significant effect on the NPL of banks. In other words, the GDP effect on NPL in this study shows a positive and significant effect while most studies show a negative effect. It demonstrates that when GDP growth increases, there is a significant increase in the growth of Nepalese banks even though there were no significant changes in income growth. Therefore, GDP growth has a positive and significant effect on the NPL of commercial banks. Thus, the bankers and policymakers need to consider GDP growth carefully while taking NPL-related decisions.

This study analyzed the effect of housing price changes on the performance of Korean regional banks using DOLS model. The analysis shows that housing price changes does not have a statistically significant effect on the loan growth, profitability and soundness of regional banks. Among macroeconomic variables, only short-term interest rates have a significant positive effect on any model. This means that a rise in short-term interest rates significantly increases loans by regional banks, which leads to a significant increase in profitability, but has a significant negative impact on soundness. On the other hand, bank characteristics variables are found to have a significant negative effect on the loan growth, profitability and soundness of Korean regional banks.
This study is founded on banks' profitability factors. Unlike the previous study in terms of diversification of the banks' funding structure, this research performs multiple regression analysis during the entire period and examines the comparative analysis of before and after the financial crisis. the study establishes hypotheses by using the wholesale funding ratio as a key focus variable with 8 explanatory variables and the operating profit on assets as a profitability index. The Loan-deposit rate gap, the Number of stores and the Non-performing loan ratio prove to be a significant profitability factor for all periods of time. Korean banks are also more profitable when their the Loan-deposit rate gap get bigger and the Number of stores grows. The wholesale funding ratio is analyzed to have no statistically significant effect on the profitability of banks. Rather than being influenced by macroeconomic indicators, it is indicated that the situation of individual banks and other financial environments have been affected. And banks increase profitability as banks increase their loan after the financial crisis. The empirical analysis shows that profitability factors have periodical distinctions, and in this aspect, this research has implications. The study needs to be expanded to cover the entire domestic banking sector, in consideration of the profitability of the banking industry in the future.
This study conducted correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis using financial statements, loan structure, ROA and ROA volatility of domestic commercial banks, regional banks and special banks for the past five years (2012 ~ 2016). The result is as follows. First, as a result of correlation analysis, bank's ROA is positively related to household loans and SME loans, but it is negatively correlated with the ratio of loans to large companies, sector bias, and loan loss provision ratio. Second, ROA volatility was negatively related to household loans and SME loans, but it was positively correlated with large corporate loans, sector bias ratio, and loan loss provision ratio. Third, as a result of the regression analysis, the variables that have a statistically significant effect on the ROA volatility of banks were household loans, SME loans, and large enterprise loans. From these empirical results, special banks with high volatility in profits need to diversify loan types and sectors in order to achieve business performance outside of policy finance. and Especially, Suhyup Bank and Nonghyup Bank, which have a large commercial role, have a large size per unit by focusing on short-term profit and Rather than focusing on large companies or large loans that are easy to obtain financial information, it is necessary to focus management capabilities on household loans and SME loans by developing capabilities such as screening techniques.

Recently, credit risk in the Chinese corporate bond market has increased significantly, and there is a possibility that banks that have invested in corporate bonds may become insolvent. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of Chinese commercial banks' investment in securities on financial performance. The analysis results are as follows. First, it is estimated that as the share of securities investment by Chinese commercial banks increases, the bank's profitability decreases. It was found that investment in securities did not have a positive impact on profitability due to the increase in credit risk in the corporate bond market and the increase in marginal companies. Second, it is estimated that as the proportion of securities investment by Chinese commercial banks increases, the bank's soundness deteriorates. As credit risk in China's capital market is increasing, continuous management of non-performing assets is required. Chinese commercial banks need portfolio management through securities investment in addition to loan assets to improve profitability. However, volatility should be managed by adjusting the scale of securities management to an appropriate level.

This study aims to investigate the determinants of default risk of rural banks in East Java, Indonesia. The method used is descriptive verification and logistic regression analysis. The data used is secondary in the form of monthly annual financial reports of rural banks in East Java during the period 2009-2018. From the results, it was shown that net interest margin (NIM) as a proxy of market risk, non-performing loan (NPL) as a proxy of credit risk, operation efficiency as a proxy of operational risk and return on assets (ROA) as a proxy of profitability have a significant influence on default risk. Meanwhile, the loan to deposit (LDR) ratio as a proxy of liquidity risk has no significant influence on default risk. Banks need to implement risk management and meet the capital adequacy requirements of regulators so that they are resistant to risk, and also, compliant with bank governance to be able to produce high returns for rural banks have an impact on sustainability and its existence. The ability to identify setbacks in bank conditions and the ability to distinguish between healthy and problematic banks will enable to anticipate default banks.
This study empirically analyzes whether bank capital channel and risk-taking channel for monetary policy work for domestic banks in South Korea by analyzing the impact of the expansionary monetary policy on the rate spread between deposit and loan, capital ratio, and loan amount. For the empirical analysis, the Uhlig (2005)'s sign-restricted SVAR(Structural Vector Auto-Regression) model is used. The empirical results are as follows: the bank's interest rate margin increases, the capital ratio improves, risk-weighted asset ratio increases, and the amount of loans increases in response to expansionary monetary shock. This empirical results confirm that bank capital channel and risk-taking channel work in domestic banks, similar to the previous research results. The implications of this study are as follows. Although the expansionary monetary policy has the effect of improving the bank's financial soundness and profitability in the short term as bank capital channel works, it could negatively affect the soundness of banks by encouraging banks to pursue risk in the long run as risk-taking channel works. It is necessary to note that the capital ratio according to the BIS minimum capital requirement of individual banks may cause an illusion in supervising the soundness of the bank. So, the bank's aggressive lending expansion may lead to an inherent weakness in the event of a crisis. Since the financial authority may have an illusion about the bank's financial soundness if the low interest rate persists, the authority needs to be actively interested in stress tests and concentration risk management in the pillar 2 of the BIS capital accord. In addition, since system risk may increase, it is necessary to conduct regular stress tests or preemptive monitoring of assets concentration risk.

In this paper, we develop theoretical game models to determine the level of government subsidies for banks to provide policy loans to Innovative SMEs(small and medium sized enterprises) through banks, which otherwise would not finance them for the sake of their own profitability. For this, we compare net cash flows of each bank using different strategies against high risk innovative SMEs. A bank can decide whether to provide them loans or not In each period. Following Kim(2003)'s Infinite horizon model on the soft budget constraint, we introduce a situation in which banks compete against each other for higher net long-term payoffs from their loans to innovative SMEs and non-innovative SMEs. From the models, we show that competition among banks in general leads to a tighter decision against innovative SMEs, as a Nash equilibrium. It is not because the government bank is simply loose in providing loans, but because competition among commercial banks for fewer riskier borrowers results in tighter loan decisions against innovative SMEs. Thus, the competitive market for policy loans to innovative SMEs fails to reach the socially optimal level of loans for innovative SMMs. Commercial banks in the competitive market may require additional supports from the government to make up for the differences in their payoffs to support innovative SMEs, possibly much riskier due to moral hazards and poor discounted cash flows. The monopolistic government bank might also request such supports from the government to fund otherwise unqualified SMEs. We calculate an optimal level of governmental support for banks to guarantee funding such high-risk innovative SMEs over periods without deviating from their optimal Nash equilibrium policies.
To overcome the profitability challenge these days, many global banks are increasingly focusing on cost efficiency through more efficient banking processes, such as online and mobile banking, whereas a number of other banks choose to differentiate their services for retaining and attracting the most valuable customer segment (Deloitte, 2011). While global banks in the retail banking industry are adopting either of these two business models as a strategic choice for their long-term growth, KB Kookmin Bank, one of the leading retail banks in South Korea, has begun to operate 'KB Rockstar' as a strategic channel, particularly designed to target college students in the youth market. The new marketing strategy has resulted in a positive impact on its brand image in customers' perception as well as a drastic increase in the number of youth customers. In this study, we analyze the case of 'KB Rockstar' and summarize the key factors for its success from a marketing perspective. First, 'KB Rockstar' is not simply a good channel strategy, but an innovative marketing strategy that aligns place, product and promotion together in order to create a synergy effect, resulting in the successful implementation of the bank's targeting strategy. Second, the strategy effectively establishes 'KB Rockstar' as a brand targeted to youth customers while also competently strengthening the image of the corporate brand, KB Kookmin Bank. The skillful implementation of organically combined marketing mix strategies has enabled the successful launch of the bank's sub-brand. Third, the strategy considers a retail bank branch as not only the place that makes sales transactions in order to generate short-term profits, but also the place that builds a long-term relationship with customers in order to maximize their lifetime values in the long run.

An economic downturn can occurred through unexpected events in various fields, such as the subprime mortgage crisis and the outbreak of Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19). Trade credit is important for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), especially during a monetary contraction, as it is the last option for firms that lack bank credit. This study aims to determine whether trade credit is profitable for the buyer and supplier firms during and after a financial crisis. We use panel data consisting of all trade credit transactions and financial statements of 5,751 Korean firms during the period 2008-2012. It shows that trade credit is more profitable for both buyers and suppliers in the post-crisis period than during the crisis. Moreover, trade payable is more effective for unconstrained buyers than for constrained buyers. Finally, a mixed strategy is superior to an aggressive or passive strategy of SMEs. The results suggest less profitability of trade credit during a period of contraction and greater sensitivity of the buyer SMEs, emphasizing the idiosyncratic liquidity strategy of each firm. This study can be helpful to develop a strategy of profitable trade credit for SMEs and to establish a policy of managing liquidity for the authority.
