  • The aim of the present study is to analyze the financial performance of converted commercial bank from non-banking financial institution through a case study of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited as sample organization. It is observed that the bank is able to achieve a stable growth rate in total deposits, total loans and advances, and net income after tax during the period of 2015-2019. Researchers also calculated some ratio analysis and noticed that the financial position of Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited was not so strong because bank's ROA, ROE, NIM and other ratios were below standard. Researchers used secondary data that were examined by using descriptive statistical tools and panel data regression model. Result shows that Bangladesh Commerce Bank has satisfactory operating efficiency, assets management efficiency, and gives loans to customers. In addition, the present study has tested some hypotheses regarding net income after tax, ROA and ROE with total assets, total loans, total deposits and interest income. These hypotheses have been accepted, which means there is no significant influence of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The study suggests that Bangladesh Commerce Bank Limited had the opportunities to make their financial position stronger by utilizing their good financial position and management efficiencies.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate and analyse the relationship between efficiency of bank industry and macroeconomic variables. We employ Johansen's multivariate cointegration methodology, since the model must be stationary to avoid the spurious results. The empirical results show that our model is stationary as well as mean-reverting. This paper also applies impulse-response functions to get additional information regarding the responses of the bank spread to the shocks economic variables such as long and short term interest rates differential, banking organ liquidity, business cycle index, and foreigner's net equity investment. The results indicate that while the bank spread respond positively to liquidity and equity investment shocks and then decay very quickly.

  • The objective of this study is to find out whether Korean main banks may have efficiency against Indian major banks. For this purpose, DEA analysis is used for checking relative efficiency levels. The study proposes, as a result, Shinhan bank, Woori bank and Kookmin bank in Korea may consider entering into Indian banking industry because these three banks have relative efficiency against main Indian banks like Yes bank, ICICI bank. The results of the study comply with actual facts since Shinhan bank already came to Indian banking market at first. Shinhan bank have three branches like Mumbai, NewDelhi etc. Wooribank also entered into India in 2012 as second case among Korean banks. But Kookmin bank did not come to India yet so they should consider coming to India. As a preliminary measures, they can send one person as a expatriate to survey the Indian banking industry like KDB in Korea. If they can utilize their core competence in real estate field at India, they may positively think about entering into India as quickly as possible. Although many Korean firms have penetrated into Indian market recently, they almost belong to manufacturing sectors so Korean service firms like banks should consider more coming to India because the most hot sector for FDI in India remain service sector and many foreign service firms already rush to Indian market. If Korean service firms like banks delay FDI further, good market opportunities would not be there any more. DEA analysis can be one of tools to check investment feasibilities. Since India becomes a compulsory subject for most of Korean firms, to increase possibilities of success in India, such Korean banks may consider applying fast-mover investment strategies to the Indian business fields.

  • After entering into the WTO in October, 2001, China started opening her bank industry on a full scale and her financial markets from the end of 2006. It is true that the Chinese commercial banks should make efforts to enhance their operational efficiency for adapting the rapid change of financial environments. In this paper, the efficiency of 4 Chinese state-owned commercial banks and 11 share holding commercial banks has been estimated. Our Tobit model to find out the determinants of these banks' efficiency. The results are as follows: The efficiency of these banks kept being improved from 1999 to 2003. With regard to the relationship between the determinants and the bank efficiency, their capital ratios, ownership structures and government subsidies are significant at the 5% level while the return on asset(ROA) is significant at the 10% level. The relationship between the determinants and the efficiency has showed that the size, capital ratios, ROA and ownership structure showed significantly before the entry to WTO, on the other hand, after WTO their capital ratios are the only factor to determine their efficiencies.

  • Market concentration in the Korean banking industry has markedly increased since the financial crisis of 1997-1998 because of M&As, P&As, and consolidation of banks. With this change, there has been a growing concern over market power in the Korean banking sector. We examine the effects of market concentration on bank efficiency and competition for the period of 1992-2006. Three different indicators of bank inefficiency are used in this study, including X-inefficiency that is derived from the directional technology distance function. The level of competition is measured by both the H-statistic of the Panzar-Rosse model and the level of the net interest margin and its standard deviation. Empirical results indicate that market concentration has not improved bank efficiency through scale economies or scope economies. Instead, recent mergers, acquisitions and consolidation of banks resulted in an increase in inefficiency measured by the three different indicators: X-inefficiency, labor inefficiency and asset inefficiency. While an increase in market share of individual banks improved bank efficiency, an increase in the overall market concentration ratio resulted in lower efficiency. Our study also finds that the Korean banking sector has been monopolistically competitive throughout the sample period except for the crisis period according to the H-statistic. Although an increase in market concentration ratio has not changed the overall level of bank competition, it has a positive significant effect on the level of the average interest margin.

  • This paper studies the influence of the bilateral expansion of Korean and Chinese banks on performance. To conduct the empirical analysis, we select eleven Banks in South Korea and thirteen Banks in China over the 2000-2014 time frame. The main regression results are as followed. First, the sample bank's overseas subsidiaries have a significant effect on profitability and the profitability is somewhat deteriorates. Second, the sample bank's overseas branch and subsidiaries have a significant effect on the bank's risk. That is, the loan loss provision ratio is slightly increased but impaired loan ratio is highly decreased. Third, the sample banks' overseas branch and subsidiaries also have a significant effect on bank efficiency. The ratio of customer deposits per employee worsens somewhat but the gross loan per employee are increased. In conclusion, as time passes, bank profitability or efficiency from mutual expansion of Korean banks and Chinese banks seem to be improving somewhat, and this phenomenon is more prominent at Korean banks than at Chinese banks.

  • This study investigates the impact of the country's governance on the revenue efficiency in the banking sectors of 42 Islamic banks in 15 countries offering Islamic banking and financial services. Technical efficiencies of individual Islamic banks were analyzed using the Data Envelopment Analysis method. The Ordinary Least Square estimation method is employed to examine the impact of country supervision and regulation on the technical efficiency of Islamic banks. With robustness check, the study assesses the impact of bank regulations and supervision on the efficiency of Islamic banks operating in different regions. The empirical findings suggest that supervisory power, activity restrictions, and private monitoring positively influence the efficiency of Islamic banks. On the other hand, we observe a negative impact of capital requirement on Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries. The findings indicate that supervisory power, activity restrictions, and private monitoring positively influence the efficiency of Islamic banks in Asia, but vice versa on capital requirement in MENA countries. This study will contribute to the body of knowledge by assessing the types of reforms in bank regulations and supervision that work best for Islamic banks in order to increase the level of efficiency and the level of regulations and supervision of Islamic banks.

  • Data Envelopment Analysis-Assurance Region(DEA-AR) model is used in this paper to investigate the efficiency and performance potential of Korean banks as they engage in activities that incur interest and non-interest expenses and produce income. DEA provides a measure of each bank's relation to the best-practice frontier for its competitors. This can provide a better quality-benchmark than using industry averages or a particular peer bank branches as the benchmark. The banks are classified into efficient and inefficient sets. Multiplier values for AR-inefficient banks with unique slacks indicate the potential for management to improve the bank's performance relative to its peers. DEA-AR that provide economically reasonable bounds for the multipliers lead to profitability potential, as distinct from efficiency, results.

  • This paper is a study on the design of the solar lamp bank which is a very important part of the solar simulator with the commercial metal halide lamps and infrared lamps. Lamp Bank is designed by the lamp bank design program based on point light source theory. The reliability of the program for lamp bank design is verified through irradiance variation experiments of a kind of lamp according to horizontal distance. Solar lamp bank facilitates heat distribution and satisfies the irradiance in the three wave length which test guidelines require. The shape of the ceiling board next to the lamp bank to promote the lamp cooling efficiency and to reduce temperature deviation and air velocity deviation in the chamber is so creative. The ceiling board of partial closed type is the best among several types.
