Innovative Marketing Channel in the South Korean Retail Banking Industry: The Case of KB Rockstar

  • To overcome the profitability challenge these days, many global banks are increasingly focusing on cost efficiency through more efficient banking processes, such as online and mobile banking, whereas a number of other banks choose to differentiate their services for retaining and attracting the most valuable customer segment (Deloitte, 2011). While global banks in the retail banking industry are adopting either of these two business models as a strategic choice for their long-term growth, KB Kookmin Bank, one of the leading retail banks in South Korea, has begun to operate 'KB Rockstar' as a strategic channel, particularly designed to target college students in the youth market. The new marketing strategy has resulted in a positive impact on its brand image in customers' perception as well as a drastic increase in the number of youth customers. In this study, we analyze the case of 'KB Rockstar' and summarize the key factors for its success from a marketing perspective. First, 'KB Rockstar' is not simply a good channel strategy, but an innovative marketing strategy that aligns place, product and promotion together in order to create a synergy effect, resulting in the successful implementation of the bank's targeting strategy. Second, the strategy effectively establishes 'KB Rockstar' as a brand targeted to youth customers while also competently strengthening the image of the corporate brand, KB Kookmin Bank. The skillful implementation of organically combined marketing mix strategies has enabled the successful launch of the bank's sub-brand. Third, the strategy considers a retail bank branch as not only the place that makes sales transactions in order to generate short-term profits, but also the place that builds a long-term relationship with customers in order to maximize their lifetime values in the long run.

Establishment of Bank Channel Strategy using Correspondence Analysis : Based on the Customer's Choice Factors of Bank Channel (대응분석을 이용한 은행 채널전략 수립연구 : 고객의 은행채널 선택요인을 바탕으로)

  • For the efficient establishment of a channel strategy for banks, this study aims to propose a channel model by classifying channels into types, and carrying out a correspondence analysis per type. A survey of bankers was conducted to visualize categorical data and create a positioning map. As a result, first, 12 banking channels were classified into 4 types based on business processing subjects and places, which were then, further grouped into the categories of full-banking and self-banking. Second, a correspondence analysis according to the classified types was carried out, and it was found that the branch-type is suitable for product description and customer management, while the banking-type is suitable for efficient business processing without time and space constraints. Furthermore, the analysis also showed that the machine-type and banking-type are inappropriate for customer management, and the mobility-type demonstrates low operational effectiveness due to a lack of awareness. The aforementioned findings suggest the need for a hybrid convergence channel that reflects the characteristics of banking tasks and fills in the gaps between the different channels. Third, a channel model was derived by adding a common area to the 2×2 model consisting of the business processing subjects and places. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that it examines the diversification of channels and factors in the division of roles by channel type based on customers' banking channel selection factors, and presents basic research findings for future channel strategy establishment and efficient channel operation.

The study reviewed fields, including financial services, customer service, Website formation and design, convenience of use and system safety, Internet Banking Model, and many related areas. Internet Banking earned high marks in most fields. This study review focuses on the following: Understanding and meeting consumer expectations for us ability, site performance and functionality. Integrating the Internet channel into overall marketing, product delivery and customer service strategies.   • The research is centered towards analyzing the differentiation of the characteristics and organization of programming strategy and channel positioning by selecting Korean International Public Relations Broadcasting Stations Arirang TV and KBS World. According to the results, Arirang TV positions Korean culture content-implied educational programs as their strategy while KBS World places the main programs of KBS1, 2TV with many entertainment programs such as dramas and entertainment shows. Arirang TV's programming strategy is well-fulfilling the purpose of promoting Korea's culture contents by organizing their programming with documentaries, tourist information, and daily living information. On the other hand, KBS World works as the agent of the spread of the Korean Wave by filling their program with dramas and K-pop programs such as . Due to the difference in programming strategy of these two broadcasting stations, Arirang TV has positioned itself as a diplomatic channel to spread Korean culture and KBS World a channel representing the Korean Wave. However, there are problems of inefficiency due to recurrent investments because of the fact that both broadcasting stations' programming strategy is to promote Korean culture and spread the Korean Wave by aiming similar targets such as foreigners or overseas Koreans.

  • Most banks use only demographic information such as gender, age, occupation and address to segment customers, but they do not reflect financial behavior patterns of customers. In this study, we aim to solve the problems by using various big data in a bank and to develop customer segmentation method which can be widely used in many banks in the future. In this paper, we propose an approach of segmenting clustering blocks with bottom-up method. This method has an advantage that it can accurately reflect various financial needs of customers based on various transaction patterns, channel contact patterns, and existing demographic information. Based on this, we will develop various marketing models such as product recommendation, financial need rating calculation, and customer churn-out prediction based on this, and we will adapt this models for the marketing strategy of NH Bank.

  • The purpose of this research, based on the Media Selection Theory, the Technology Acceptance Model, and the Social Influence Theory, is to investigate the influential factors that affect media selection in banking transactions. Analyses showed that for location sensitive bank windows and ATMs(automatic teller machines), defined as offline-based transaction channels, convenience was the variable affecting media selection. However, in the case of online media not related to location, (phone banking, internet banking, and mobile banking) reliability was the significant variable influencing use. The findings show that banking organizations may benefit from identifying traits of media affecting use, and should differentiate customer services for competitive advantage.

  • Advertising is regarded as one of media's most proficient instruments of reflecting changing society. It represents the channel through which globalization and consumption culture have spread into everyday life. This study explores the significance and representations of multi-culturalism in contemporary television commercials. For the purpose, the social and historical meanings of the term 'multi-culturalism', generated inside and outside Korea, are discussed. A series of text analysis are followed, focusing on the representation of non-Korean models in terms of ethnicity and race. The result shows that the advertising is the instrument utilized in creating the relationship between multi-culturalism and racialism, which is called 'strategic multi-culturalism'. This strategy commonly happens in today's commercial advertising such as information/telecommunication, real estate/branded apartment complex, and bank/finance market. Despite the increasing number of multi-cultural commercials in the past decade, multi-culturalism in Korean society has not yet fully articulated.
