When multiple clients share bandwidth and receive a streaming service, HTTP Adaptive Streaming has a problem in that the bandwidth is measured inaccurately due to the ON-OFF pattern of the segment request. To solve the problem caused by the ON-OFF pattern, the proposed PANDA (Probe AND Adapt) determines the quality of the segment to be requested while increasing the target bandwidth. However, since the target bandwidth is increased by a fixed amount, there is a problem in low bandwidth utilization and a slow response to changes in bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a video quality control scheme that improves the low bandwidth utilization and slow responsiveness of PANDA. The proposed scheme adjusts the amount of increase in the target bandwidth according to the bandwidth utilization after judging the bandwidth utilization by comparing the segment download time and the request interval. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can fully utilize the bandwidth and can quickly respond to changes in bandwidth.
When the latency of a flow in a fair packet scheduler, which is determined by its rate, violates its required delay bound, the scheduler should reduce the latency with even raising the rate being reserved for the flow. The excessively reserved rate win enforce some outgoing link bandwidth be lost. This loss can not be, unfortunately, evaluated by the three metrics of latency, fairness and implementation complexity used in previous works. This paper is aimed to first introduce the metric of bandwidth utilization to investigate the bandwidth loss in a scheduler and then evaluate the timestamp based schedulers in terms of the bandwidth and payload utilizations. The results show that the bandwidth utilization increases with loosing the required delay bound and, in particular, schedulers with the latency property of WFQ have much better payload utilization by up to 50% than that in the SCFQ one.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) has been developed as a key technology to enhance the reliability, manageability and overall quality of service of core If networks with connection-oriented tunnel LSP and traffic engineering such as constraint-based routing, explicit routing, and restoration. In this paper, we propose a control bandwidth borrowing scheme that maximizes the utilization of tunnel LSPs or physical links by an extension to the RSVP-TE label distribution protocol. MPLS-based core switching network and VPN services rely on the establishment of connection-oriented tunneled LSPs that are configured or predefined by network management systems. The mechanism of network management system varies from (i) a relatively static LSP establishment accounting, to (ii) a dynamic QoS routing mechanisms. With the use of hierarchical LSPs, the extra bandwidth that is unused by the trunk (outer) LSPs should be fully allocated to their constituent end-to-end user traffic (inner) LSPs in order to maximize their utilization. In order to find out the unused extra bandwidth in tunnel LSP or physical link and redistribute these resources to constituent LSPs, we expend the functionality of RSVP-TE and the found unused extra bandwidth is redistributed with a weight-based recursive redistribution scheme. By the extended RSVP-TE and proposed recursive redistributed scheme, we could achieve the instantaneous maximized utilization of tunnel LSP or physical link suffering from the potential under-utilization problem and guarantee the end-to-end QoS requirements. With the proposed scheme, network manager can manage more effectively the extra available bandwidth of hierarchical LSPs and maximize the instantaneous utilization of the tunneled LSP resources.

The Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) has been considered to be one of the most promising solutions for the implementation of the Fiber To The Home (FTTH) technology designed to ameliorate the "last mile" bandwidth bottleneck. In the EPON network, an efficient and fair bandwidth allocation is a very important issue, since multiple optical network units (ONUs) share a common upstream channel for packet transmission. To increase bandwidth utilization, an EPON system must provide a way to adaptively allocate the upstream bandwidth among multiple ONUs in accordance to their bandwidth demands and requirements. We present a new hybrid method that satisfies these requirements. The advantage of our method comes from the consideration of application-specific bandwidth allocation and the minimization of the idle bandwidth. Our simulation results show that our proposed method outperforms existing dynamic bandwidth allocation methods in terms of bandwidth utilization.

Passive Optical Network(PON) architecture is a very simple. However media access protocol is necessary to the PON because the ONUs should share a channel in the upsteam direction. We propose the design of dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for improved bandwidth utilization in the broad bandwidth access network that uses Ethernet PON. The object of our study shall be to decrease a unused remainder bandwidth of granted timeslot for a upstream traffic transmission. We propose that OLT notifies ONU of maximum transmission window during discovery and ONU request a amount under maximum transmission window after it checks a frame length. We confirm that the proposed algorithm shown improving performance from bandwidth utilization and queueing delay point of view through the simulation result.
In an asymmetrical speed channel environment like asymmetric digital subscriber line, the up-link bandwidth is normally smaller than the down-link bandwidth, which will lead to extremely low utilization of down-link bandwidth when current P2P video transmission is applied. To overcome this, a new fast P2P video transmission method applied in an asymmetrical speed channel environment is proposed in this paper. On the basis of the many-to-one concept, the proposed method uses a new multipeer aggregation technique to enhance the utilization of down-link bandwidth. In addition, an adaptive peer assignment algorithm is also introduced in order to minimize the overall transmission time. Experimental results show that by using our proposed method, the utilization of down-link bandwidth is significantly improved, and the overall transmission time is greatly reduced.
Most fair packet schedulers supporting quality-of-services of real-time multimedia applications are based on the finish time design scheme in which the expected transmission finish time of each packet is used as its timestamp. This scheme can adjust the latency of a flow with raising the flow's scheduling rate but it may suffer from severe bandwidth loss due to the coupled rate and delay allocation. This paper first introduces the concept of delay resource, and then proposes a scheduling method to improve the bandwidth utilization in which delay resource being lost due to the coupled allocation is transformed into bandwidth one. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed method gives higher bandwidth utilization by up to 50%.

This paper proposes a new dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm for XGPON (10-Gigabit-capable passive optical network). The proposed algorithm uses a common service counter for each service class unlike to the existing algorithms. The unused bandwidth of a service class can be used for other service classes to increase bandwidth utilization. We illustrate examples to show the proposed algorithm is superior to existing algorithms.
The SARLM(Source Adaptive Receiver-Driven Multi-Layered Multicast) has been proposed to address heterogeneous bandwidth constraints through layer merging and splitting. However, this method causes that receivers subscribing to the higher layer drop down to the lower layer and hence may decrease utilization of available bandwidth after layer merging. In this paper, we proposed a multicast regrouping method considering distributive status of receivers according to loss rates. The proposed method weights receivers according to loss rates. And then it groups higher layer with receivers subscribing to lower layer have extra bandwidth and lower layer with receivers subscribing to higher layer have high loss rate. Experimental results show that receivers subscribing to higher layer can receive in high transmission rate and consequently the proposed method effectively improves utilization of available bandwidth.

In recent year, EPON(Ethernet PON) system is expected to be more attractive solutions for high speed, broadband access networks in next generation access networks due to the conversionce of low-cost ethernet equipment and low-cost fiber infrastructure. Upstream channel control algorithm is essential to hare upstream bandwidth in EPON. In this paper, we suggest HUHG(High Utilization and Hybrid Granting) algorithm for supporting high bandwidth utilization and QoS for different service class. This algorithm improves bandwidth utilization as removing or diminishing idle time of upstream channel using characteristics of fixed EF(Expedited Forwarding) sub-cycle. The proposed algorithm also minimizes the packet delay and delay variation of EF class. We conduct detailed simulation experiments using OPNET to study the performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
