A comparative study of grinding mill type on aluminium powders with carbon nano tube: traditional ball mill and planetary ball mill

  • Grinding characteristics for aluminium and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) powder during traditional and planetary ball milling investigated from the viewpoint of particle behaviour with the aimat developing CNT-dispersed samples ground based on powder metallurgy routes.In this work, a comparison between the pure aluminium and CNT input aluminium grinding was carried out to determine grinding time effect on size reduction.We observed that the use of the curly small-diameter multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) attributed to the beneficial role of the MWCNTs as grinding aids. It is suggested that careful choices of the sizes of CNTs and Al powders would allow fine-grinding of composite particles with uniformly distributed CNT reinforcements thereby ensuring improved properties of the final composites produced by low-temperature compacting.

Ni 첨가가 볼밀링한 MoSi$_2$분말성형체의 소결속도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Ni Addition on the Sintering Kinetics of Ball-milled Mosi$_2$ Powder Compacts)

  • Sintering kinetics of ball-milled $MoSi_2$ was studied with the addition of Ni. $MoSi_2$ powder with the average particle size of 1 $\mu\textrm{m}$ was obtained from ball-milling of 10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ powder. Small amount of Ni was added to the ball-milled $MoSi_2$ powder by salt solution and reduction method. The powder was compacted into cylindrical shape at 200 MPa and isothermally sintered in a $H_2$ atmosphere at the temperature range of 1100~$1400^{\circ}C$ for 3~600 minutes. The changes of linear shrinkage and sintered density were monitored as a function of sintering time. The microstructure was observed by using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Phases were identified by X-ray diffratometer and electro-probe micro analysis. Sintering kinetics of Ni-added powder was compared to as-milled powder and the apparent activation energy was calculated from Arrhenius plot.

  • $(SrBi_2Nb_2O_9)_{0.5}-(Bi_3TiNbO_9)_{0.5}$ ceramics were fabricated by the mixed-oxide method, and the structural and electrical properties with variation of ball-milling time were investigated. All SBN-BTN specimens showed the typical polycrystalline X-ray diffraction patterns without the presence of the second phase. The SBN-BTN specimen sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$ and ball-milled for 168h showed the average grain size of $16{\mu}m$. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss of the SBN-BTN specimen sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ and ball-mill for 72h were 225, 0.4% at 1KHz, respectively.

WS$_2$ 고체윤활제의 양산 및 적용 (Mass-production of WS$_2$ Solid Lubricant and Its applications)

  • The processing conditions for the mass production of platelet WS$_2$ lubricant powder were optimized. The mixture of tungsten and sulfur powders was sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-3}$ torr and heat-treated at 850$\circ$C for 2 h. The internal pressure of reaction chamber was maintained at certain level by controlling the release valve automatically. The reaction product was the platelet WS$_2$ powder with an average size of 15 $\mu$m. The synthesized WS$_2$ powder was then coated on the wiper-blade of automobiles and the commercial deep-grooved ball bearing using wet and dry coating methods, respectively. High lubricity and wear resistance of wet coated wiper-blade were confirmed by the life test of 70,000 cycles. The life-time of the ball bearing assembled after WS$_2$ coating onto each part increased 50 times compared to the non-coated ball bearing.

밀링조건이 사용 후 PDP패널의 유가금속 용출효율에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Milling Conditions for Dissolution Efficiency of Valuable Metals from PDP Waste Panels)

  • In this study, the microstructure and valuable metals dissolution properties of PDP waste panel powders were investigated as a function of milling parameters such as ball diameter size, milling time, and rotational speed during high-energy milling process. The complete refinement of powder could achieved at the ball diameter size of 5 mm due to sufficient impact energy and the number of collisions. With increasing milling time, the average particle size was rapidly decreased until the first 30 seconds, then decreased gradually about $3{\mu}m$ at 3 minutes and finally, increased with presence of agglomerated particles of $35{\mu}m$ at 5 minutes. Although there was no significant difference on the size of the particle according to the rotational speed from 900 to 1,100 rpm, the total valuable metals dissolution amount was most excellent at 1,100 rpm. As a result, the best milling conditions for maximum dissolving amount of valuable metals (Mg: 375 ppm, Ag 135 ppm, In: 17 ppm) in this research were achieved with 5 mm of ball diameter size, 3min of milling time, and 1,100 rpm of rotational speed.

Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석의 자기적특성 향상 연구 (Improvement of Magnetic Properties of Nd-Fe-B Type Sintered Magnet)

  • Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석의 특성을 향상시키기 위해서는 Nd-Fe-B계 합금의 조성 및 제조공정을 조절하여 자성분말의 입도 및 입도분포, 강자성상인 N $d_2$F $e_{14}$B상의 분율, 자성분말의 배향도, 산소 함량, grain size 등과 같은 factor들을 최적화 하여야 한다. 본 연구에서는 실험실 규모로 Nd-Fe-B계 합금 조성 및 공정 조절을 통하여 Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석을 제조하는 연구를 수행하였으며, 분쇄매체 분쇄시간 및 ball size에 따른 Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석의 자기적특성을 분석하여 최적의 분쇄조건을 조사하였다. 또한 분쇄공정 중 FeGa합금을 첨가하여 잔류자속밀도의 감소없이 Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석의 보자력을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 이와 같은 분쇄 조건의 연구, FeGa 합금에 의한 보자력 향상, 건식분쇄 방법 및 powder blending 공정을 적용하여 잔류자속밀도( $B_{r}$,) : 14.4kG, 보자력($_{i}$ $H_{c}$) : 9.4kOe, 최대자기에너지적((BH)$_{\max}$) : 47 MGOe의 자기적 특성을 갖는 Nd-Fe-B계 소결자석을 제조하였다.

입자 크기가 PZT계 압전 후막의 물성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Particle Size on Properties of PZT -Based Thick Films)

  • 알루미나 기판 위에 Pb(Ni$_{1}$3/Nb$_{2}$3/)O$_3$-PbZrO$_3$-PbTiO$_3$ 후막을 스크린 인쇄한 후 800∼100$0^{\circ}C$에서 소결하여 압전 후막을 제조하였다. 마모 밀과 볼 밀 분쇄법을 이용하여 입자 크기가 서로 다른 압전 분말을 제조하였으며, 압전 분말의 입자 크기가 후막의 미세구조와 전기적 성질에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 마모 밀링한 분말의 평균 입자 크기는 0.44 $\mu\textrm{m}$로 볼 밀링한 분말의 평균 입자 크기, 2.87 $\mu$m 보다 훨씬 작았다. 후막을 80$0^{\circ}C$에서 소결하였을 때는 마모 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막의 입자 크기가 볼 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막의 입자 크기보다 더 작았으며, 소결 온도가 증가함에 따라 그 차이가 점차 감소하였다. 그리고, 전체 소결 온도 구간에서 마모 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막이 볼 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막보다 균일하고 치밀한 미세구조를 보였다. 소결 온도가 90$0^{\circ}C$ 이상일 때, 마모 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막이 볼 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막보다 우수한 전기적 성질을 가졌다. 90$0^{\circ}C$에서 소결한 마모 밀링한 분말로 제조한 후막의 유전상수($\varepsilon$$_{r}$), 잔류분극(P$_{r}$), 항전계(E$_{c}$)는 각각 559, 16.3 $\mu$C/$cm^2$, 51.3 kV/cm이었다.다..

  • Particle morphology change and different experimental condition analysis during composite fabrication process by traditional ball milling with discrete element method (DEM) simulation were investigated. A simulation of the three dimensional motion of balls in a traditional ball mill for research on the grinding mechanism was carried out by DEM simulation. We studied the motion of the balls, the ball behavior energy and velocity; the forces acting on the balls were calculated using traditional ball milling as simulated by DEM. The effect of the operational variables such as the rotational speed, ball material and size on the flow velocity, collision force and total impact energy were analyzed. The results showed that increased rotation speed with interaction impact energy between balls and balls, balls and pots and walls and balls. The rotation speed increases with an increase of the impact energy. Experiments were conducted to quantify the grinding performance under the same conditions. Furthermore, the results showed that ball motion affects the particle morphology, which changed from irregular type to plate type with increasing rotation speed. The evolution was also found to depend on the impact energy increase of the grinding media. These findings are useful to understand and optimize the particle motion and grinding behavior of traditional ball mills.

기계적합금화 방법에 의한 Nb-Sn 상형성 (Phase formation in mechanically Nb-Sn powders)

  • 조성이 $Nb_3Sn$인 Nb와 Sn 혼합분말에 대해 기계적 합금화 과정중의 미세구조 변화를 X선회절실험으로 관찰하였다. 분쇄시간에 따른 결정구조 변화는 볼/분말미와 볼의 크기에 따라 변하였다. 지름이 9.5mm인 볼을 사용한 경우, 각 분말들이 초기에는 기계적으로 합금되어 A15구조를 갖는 상을 형성하였고, 그 이후에는 비정질화가 이루어졌다. 지름이 작은 3.968mm인 볼을 사용한 경우 초기에 비정질화하였다. 이들 결과들은 볼크기에 따라 분쇄에너지 효과가 다르기 때문이라고 생각될 수 있다. 순수한 $Nb_3Sn$ 화학양론조성의 상이 기계적 합금화 방법으로 제조된 과포화 고용체를 열처리하여 쉽게 얻어졌다. 기계적 합금화로 비정질화된 분말을 열처리한 경우, Nb3Sn과 Nb6Sn5상의 혼합물이 얻어졌다.

코튼볼 여재의 여과 특성 실험 연구 (An experimental study on the filtration test of cotton ball filters)

  • In order to measure the filtration characteristics of a cotton ball shape filter, the experiments of suspended solids(SS) surrogate material selection and filtration performance have been carried out in this study. Between the two materials of powdered activated carbon(PAC) and powdered red-clay, PAC is more suitable surrogate material in terms of experimental criteria and particle size distribution in the non-point source pollutants removal system. As a result of the filtration experiments with the cotton ball shape filter, the initial headloss was about 8 cm, and the headloss slightly increased over filtration time. The Kozeny-Carman equation was used to analyze the changes of pressure and porosity during the filtration. The initial porosity was calculated as 0.945 and it decreased to 0.936 at the end of design filtration time. As the filtration continued, the SS concentration of the filtered water gradually increased and the SS removal rate gradually decreased. When the SS target removal efficiency is assumed to be 80%, the cumulative SS removal capacity is expected as $28.8kg/m^2$. This means the volume loading rate of the cotton ball shape filter can be $115m^3/m^2$ when the typical SS concentration of non-point source water pollution is assumed as 250 mg/L.
