Effects on Walking & Balance upon Improvement of Postural Control Therapy for Hemiplegic Patient (자세조절 증진이 편마비 환자의 보행과 균형에 미치는 영향 -증례 보고-)

  • Purpose : The neurologically impaired patients have sensory, motor, cognition, perception problems which cause reduction of body schema, balance control and postural control provoke disfunction. The purpose of this case report was to evaluate effects on gait&balance upon improvement of postural control for left hemiplegia. Methods : This study has performed single subject design from March to April 2013 for 6 weeks. The subject of this study was a 67years old female patient with left hemiplegia. Timed Up and Go (TUG) test and Functional Reach (FR) test were used as evaluation tool. The subject was treated 5 times a week for 30 minutes each. Results : The result is that the walking velocity was decreased, the ability of gait was improved than before the training. The length of FR was increased from 8.33cm to 22.67cm. Conclusion : According to the results, the treatment improves subject's ability of walking in this study.

Effects of Postural Balance at Game-based Visual Feedback Training of the Elderly (고령자의 게임기반 시각피드백 훈련에 따른 자세 균형 효과)

  • In this paper, we analyzed the effects of game-based visual feedback training on postural balance control in young adults and older adults. We provided postural balance training by 23 young adults and 14 older adults and for four weeks in fifth minute a day and three days a week using IBalance(Cybermedic Inc., Korea). We evaluated the ability of postural balance using balance SD(Biodex, medicalscience Inc., USA) for the validation of game contents based on visual feedback training program. The results showed that postural stability and limits of stability of young adults and older adults were improved significantly before and after the training(p<0.05). Thus, the games of postural balance encouraged anterior, posterior, medial, lateral and multidirectional weight shifting regarding postural balance. Our study indicates that postural balance training of visual feedback based game could be adapted for improving postural balance. Moreover, we could develope of game contents for individuals and various ages for effective application of this game-based visual feedback training.

Effects of Mechanical Horseback Riding Training on Trunk Control and Balance function in Stroke patients (뇌졸중 환자의 체간조절, 균형능력에 기계적 승마치료가 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of mechanical horseback riding training on trunk control, balance function in stroke patients. 15 stroke patients were recruited for this study. The subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental(n=7) and control(n=8). All subjects received a routine physical therapy. The mechanical horseback riding training was for 30 min in the case of the EG subjects. This study was carried out approximately 8 weeks from March 4 to May 3. The assessment tools of this study involved the trunk control test, postural assessment scale for stroke, Berg balance scale and timed up and go test. The measurements were recorded before the intervention and after the intervention. In the cases of the EG subjects and CG subjects, the variables measured after the intervention significantly differed from trunk control test, postural assessment scale for stroke, Berg balance scale and timed up and go test before the intervention (p<.05). Also, there were significant differences in trunk control test, postural assessment scale for stroke, Berg balance scale and timed up and go test at post test between the 2 groups (p<.05). The findings indicate that mechanical horseback riding training exerts a positive effect on trunk control, balance function in stroke patients. Further studies are required to generalize the result of this study.

The Effects of the Balance Training Program on the Excercise Performance and Injuries (정적균형훈련이 운동수행력 및 상해발생에 미치는 영향(탄성을 이용한))

  • This study approaches the effects of Balance Training on excercise performance and the prevention from the injuries caused by excercise. The subjects of the Balance Training program are female exercise beginners and the research period covers 8 weeks from January 10 to March 7, 2003. The research objects are 19 female golf beginners in 30s to 40s, who live in Seoul or Seongnam in Gyeonggi province and have played golf less than 6 months. The programs of the Balance Training and exercise performance were conducted to an 11 experimental group among the 19 research objects at the same time, and only the exercise performance program was applied to an 8 control group for 8 weeks. Before and after 8 weeks' application of the research programs to each group, the research subjects were examined, especially the components of their bodies, the balance and the performance capability were measured both before and after the test. The frequency of injuries by exercise was measured after the test, and the difference of the frequency was compared with the frequency before exercise. First, the experimental group, in a measurement of balance, showed that SN, MB, SAr and SAg of static balance decreased in a situation of MEO, MEC, GEO, GEC, TBEO, TBO, FHEO, FEO(p <0.05), but the control group increased. Second, the analysis on the change of exercise performance indicated better improvement in distance, ball speed, and accuracy of the experimental group than the control group(p<0.05). Third, the experience of injuries showed that there were 2 injuries in the experimental group and 11 injuries in the control group. The injured parts were 2 cases in the hands and fingers of the experimental group, and 1 case in the shoulder, 4 in the elbows, 4 in the hands and fingers and 2 in the lumber of the control group. From the above-mentioned results, it is recognized that the Balance Training program improved the exercise performance of female golf beginners and had good effects on the prevention from injuries. Accordingly, if this program is applied to sports-beginners, it will contribute to the improvement of the public health.

Balance Exercise Program Using Training Mats Improves the Postural Balance of Elderly Individuals: A Randomized Controlled Trial

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of balance training using a training mat on the postural balance of the elderly individuals. Methods: Thirty-five participants were selected from a falling prevention class and were randomly allocated to two groups; 17 in an exercise group (EG, $72.7{\pm}5.1$ years) and 18 in the control group ($74.9{\pm}4.0$ years). The EG underwent balance training using training mats for 60 minutes a day, 2 days a week, for 4 weeks. Postural balance parameter (timed up and go test, functional reach test, and one leg standing) were measured pre- and post- training. Results: The EG showed significant improvements in all variables that were analyzed. Conclusion: This study confirmed that balance training using a training mat effectively improves the postural balance in elderly people at risk for falling.

The Efficacy of Sacro-Occipital Technique for Stroke Patients on Activity of Daily Living (ADL), Leg Function.Balance (Sacro-Occipital Technique이 중풍 환자의 일상생활동작, 하지기능.균형에 미치는 효과)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the efficacy of Sacro-Occipital Technique with stroke on activity of daily living(ADL), leg function balance. Methods : Sacro-Occipital Technique at pelvic girdle was applied to six stroke-originated hemiplegic patients who had been treated by general oriental medicine rehabilitation therapy(sample group). The other five stroke-originated hemiplegic patients had only general oriental medicine rehabilitation therapy(control group). Outcomes were assessed by Modified Barthel Index(MBI), Berg Balance Scale(BBS) before and after treatment in each group. Results : Both sample and control group exhibited substantial improvements on the MBI and BBS. And BBS showed significantly meaningful differences between sample and control group. Conclusions : Sacro-Occipital Technique may be efficacious method of improving ADL, leg function balance of patients after stroke.

The Effects of Community-based Exercise Program to Improve Leg Muscle Strength and Balance for Elderly Women (노인여성의 하지근력 및 평형성 향상을 위한 지역사회 운동프로그램의 효과)

  • Purpose : This study was aimed at determining the effects of community-based exercise program to improve leg muscle strength and balance for elderly women. Methods : This study was nonequivalent control group pre-post test design. Subjects were assigned to two different groups(exercise group=11, control group=7). Exercise group performed community-based exercise program for 8 weeks. Outcome measures included leg muscle strength, balance, walking velocity, activities of daily living(ADL), exercise self-efficacy and health-related quality of life(QoL). The collected data analyzed by independent t-test and paired t-test. Results : Leg muscle strength, walking velocity and mental component summary(QoL) were significantly improved in the exercise group. But balance and exercise self-efficacy were significantly worsened in the control group. There were no significant difference between groups after 8 weeks of community-based exercise. Conclusion : These results suggested that the community-based exercise program is effective for elderly women in improving leg muscle strength, walking velocity and mental component summary(QoL).

The Effect of Whole-Body Vibration Exercise on Balance, Muscle Strength and Falls Efficacy in the Elderly (전신진동운동이 노인의 균형, 근력 및 낙상효능감에 미치는 영향)

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of whole body vibration exercise on balance, muscle strength and falls efficacy in the elderly. METHODS: In this blinded randomized allocation study, 27 elderly were assigned to a whole-body vibration exercise group (n=14), consisting of 25 min structured exercises for 2 days per week for 6 weeks and a control group (n=13) performing the same program without vibration. At baseline and after the 6-week intervention, balance was measured using the Korean version of the Berg balance scale (K-BBS), timed up and go (TUG) test and functional reach test (FRT). Muscle strength was determined using the 30-s chair stand test (CST). Fear of falling was assessed using the Korean version of falls efficacy scale (K-FES). Paired t-test and independent t-test were used for within and between group comparisons, respectively. RESULTS: After the intervention, the experimental group showed significantly higher changes in all the parameters (K-BBS score, TUG test, CST, K-FES score) (p<.05) compared with the control group. However, there was no significant change in all parameters in the control group (p>.05). CONCLUSION: The whole-body vibration exercise program may be helpful to improve balance, mobility, muscle performance and fear of falling in the elderly.

A Balance Training System using a Haptic Device and Its Evaluations (햅틱 장치를 이용한 균형 훈련 시스템 및 효용성 검증)

  • Haptic device can be a useful rehabilitation tool in balance training. The proposed system is composed of a body-wear smartphone, Phantom Omni(R) device, and its control PC system. Ten young healthy subjects performed balance tasks with different postures during 30 seconds with their eyes closed. An Android program on the smartphone transferred mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) tilt angles to the PC system, which can generate haptic command through haptic device. Statistical data analysis was performed using MATLAB(R). COP (Center of Pressure) related indexes were measured to see reduction in body sway. ANOVA showed that haptic device significantly reduced body sway. Intuitive balance guidance could be generated using an economical and small-sized commercial haptic device, making the system efficient.

Effects of Virtual Reality Exercise Program on Balance in Multiple Sclerosis Patients

  • Purpose: This study was conducted in order to investigate the effectiveness of an 8-week virtual reality exercise program designed around the Nintendo Wii (Wii), in improving balance among patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Methods: The study included 16 patients with MS (10 female, 6 male) who were assigned randomly to experimental (n=8) or control group (n=8). Experimental group performed three 40-minute Wii balance-training sessions per week, for 8 weeks. The control group did not perform any of the training programs. A computerized dynamic posturography (Sensory Organizing Test, SOT) was used to evaluate all patients at baseline and at the end of the treatment protocol. Statistical significance was tested in between the patients before and after treatment by t-test. Results: After 24 training sessions, SOT showed significant difference on condition 5, 6, and vestibular ratios within the experimental group from baseline to post-intervention. By contrast, no significant difference was observed within the control groups. Conclusion: These findings demonstrated that the virtual reality training program could improve the outcomes in terms of balance in the MS population. Long term follow ups and the development of more efficient virtual reality training programs are needed.
