This study evaluates heavy metal(Cu and Cr) adsorption characteristics produced from food waste charcoal extracted in an optimal operation condition after analyzing activated charcoal of iodine adsorption and heavy metals that derived from an activation process of carbide by the developed by-products of food waste treatment facility using the methods from previous studies. As experiment apparatus, this study used a tube-shaped high temp furnace. The mixing ratio of by-products of food waste treatment facility, carbide, and activation component($ZnCl_2$) was 1:1. The experiment was proceeded as adjusting the activation temperature from 400 to $800^{\circ}C$ and activation time from 30 to 120 minutes. The optimal activation condition for iodine absorption was 90 minutes at $700^{\circ}C$ and by using the produced food waste charcoal, this study conducted an experiment on absorption of heavy metals (Cu and Cr) as changing pH of artificial wastewater and stirring time. As a result, pH 7 showed the highest heavy metal decontamination ratio and in terms of stirring time, it revealed balance adsorption after 10 minutes. This result can be particularly applied as basic data for recyclability of high concentration organic waste, by-products of food waste treatment facility, as an food waste charcoal.
The adsorption capacity of charcoal is a function of the airborne concentration of the target chemical. To evaluate the adsorption capacity of charcoal packed in the cartridges of air purifying respirators, breakthrough tests were conducted with carbon tetrachloride for three commercial cartridges (3M models #7251, #6000 and AX) at 25, 50, 100, 250 and 500 ppm. Adsorption capacities were calculated using a mass transfer balance equation derived from the curve fitting to the breakthrough curves obtained experimentally. Carbon micropore volumes were estimated by iteration to fit the Dubinin/Radushkevich (D/R) adsorption isotherm. They were 0.6566, 0.5727 and 0.3087 g/cc for #7251, #6000 and the AX cartridge, respectively. Above 100 ppm (at high challenge concentrations), #7251 and #6000 showed higher adsorption capacities. However, as the challenge concentration decreased, the adsorption capacities of #7251 and #6000 sharply dropped. On the other hand, the adsorption capacity of the AX cartridge showed little change with the decrease of the challenge concentration. Thus, the AX showed a higher adsorption capacity than #7251 and #6000 at the 5-50 ppm level. It is concluded that service-life tests of cartridges and adsorption capacity tests of charcoal should be conducted at challenge concentration levels reflecting actual working environmental conditions. Alternatively, it is recommended to use the D/R adsorption isotherm to extrapolate adsorption capacity at low concentration levels from the high concentration levels at which breakthrough tests are conducted, at a minimum of two different concentration levels.
A numerical simulation was conducted on perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in the Gwangyang Bay using a multi-box model to estimate the transport of organic chemicals in the coastal environment. The results of the sensitivity analysis on dissolved PFOS and PFOS in Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) indicate that they were most significantly influenced by the adsorption rate, desorption rate, and sinking velocity coefficients. PFOS in phytoplankton was found to be sensitive to bio-concentration and the excretion rate. The results of the mass balance indicate that the standing stocks of PFOS in water, POC, and phytoplankton are 345.55 g, 63.76 g, and 0.11 g, respectively, in the inner part and 149.90 g, 27.51 g, and 0.05 g, respectively, in the outer part. Considering flux in the inner part, adsorption to POC had the highest value among transition paths. The next highest were desorption, outflow to the outer part, and inflow to the inner part. Outflow into the open sea was found to have the highest value for the outer part.
Nonylphenol is an endocrine-disrupting chemical that is the degradation product of the nonionic surfactants nonylphenol ethoxylates. To understand the contamination and behavioral characteristics of nonylphenol, we measured the nonylphenol concentrations in surface water in the lower reaches of the Suyeong River, Korea. The results were used to estimate the material balance. The target area was divided into three regions to estimate the material balance of nonylphenol. In region 1, in flux of the dissolved nonylphenol was 282.3 g/day and the nonylphenol influx in particulate suspended solids was 1,582.8 g/day. The dissolved nonylphenol outflow discharged toward region 2 was 192.5 g/day, while the adsorption to particulate suspended solids was 89.8 g/day. Within the particulate suspended solids, the outflow to region 2 was 1,250.0 g/day, while the estimated amount settling in the sediments was 422.7 g/day. The adsorption of dissolved nonylphenol to the particulate suspended solids in regions 1 and 2 was 31.8% and 54.9%, respectively. In region 3, the desorption rate was 8.8%.
Analysis of particle size distribution of a sample of fine aluminum hydroxide powder was carried out by four different methods, i. e., conductivity, air permeability, gas-adsorption and sedimentation. Each method was reproducible. The results obtained by Coulter counter and sedimentation balance were similar, and the data obtained by Lea and Nurse permeameter and Stroehlein areameter were also similar. But the results differ considerabley between the former and the latter. The advantages and disavantages of each method were discussed briefly and a means of comparing the results with those obtianed by surface area measurements was shown.
The reforming catalyst and the electrodes in fuel cells can be poisoned by the organic sulfur compound which is added as an odorant for checking out the leakage of natural gas, and that makes a big problem of system degradation. In this study, various adsorbents, such as silica, ${\gamma}$-alumina, activated carbon, HZSM-5, Ultra-stable Y zeolite (USY), and beta zeolite (BEA), were utilized to remove tetra-hydrothiophene (THT) and tert-butylmercaptan (TBM), and to confirm the performance in the adsorption of those odorants by using a continuous adsorptive bed. The effects of Si/Al ratio of zeolites, adsorption temperature and the type of balance gas (methane or He) on the adsorption performance in the packed bed have been investigated. In addition, the competitive adsorption between TBM and THT on the adsorbents was also estimated. The result shows that H-type BEA zeolite exhibited the highest adsorption capacity for TBM and THT odorant, and the higher amount of THT was removed adsorptively on the same adsorbent than TBM. The physical and chemical adsorption of those compounds on acid sites of zeolite were confirmed by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared spectrum (IR) analyses.
In the present research, we prepared the activated carbon (AC) sorbents to remove gas-phase mercury. The mercury adsorption of virgin AC, chemically treated AC and fly ash was performed. Sulfur impregnated and sulfuric acid impregnated ACs were used as the chemically treated ACs. A simulated flue gas was made of SOx, NOx and mercury vapor in nitrogen balance. A reduced mercury adsorption capacity was obtained with the simulated gas as compared with that containing only mercury vapor in nitrogen. With the simulated gas, the sulfuric acid treated AC showed the highest performance, but it might have the problem of corrosion due to the emission of sulfuric acid. It was also found that the high sulfur impregnated AC also released a portion of sulfur at $140^{\circ}C$. Thus, it was concluded that the low sulfur impregnated AC was suitable for the treatment of flue gas in terms of stability and efficiency.
The development of solar thermal energy used adsorption desalination technology have been examined as a viable option for supplying clean energy. In this study, the modelling of the main devices for solar thermal energy used and adsorption desalination system was introduced. Silica gel type adsorption desalination system is considered to be a promising low-temperature heat utilization system. The design is divided into three parts. First, the evaporator for the vaporization of the tap water is designed, and then the reactor for the adsorption and release of the steam is designed, followed by the condenser for the condensation of the fresh water is designed. In addition, new features based on the energy balance are also included to design absorption desalination system. In this basic research, One-bed(reactor) adsorption desalination plant that employ a low-temperature solar thermal energy was proposed and experimentally studied. The specific water yield is measured experimentally with respect to the time controlling parameters such as heat source temperatures, coolant temperatures, system switching and half-cycle operational times. Desalination is processes that permeate our daily lives, but It requires substantial energy input, powered either from electricity or from thermal input. From the environmental and sustainability perspecives, innovative thermodynamic cycles are needed to produce the above-mentioned useful effects at a lower specific energy input. This article describes the development of adsorption cycles for the production of desalting effects. We want that this adsorption system can be driven by low temperature heat sources at 60 to $80^{\circ}C$, such as renewable, solar thermal energy.
A mathematical model was developed for the simulation of a Pressure Swing Adsorption process with dehydrogenation reaction. The minimum number of beds and optimum operating sequence were determined using MINLP under the given operating conditions. Based on these results, we estimated the minimum annual cost.
Adsorption dynamics of ethane/ethylene mixture gas and desorption dynamics during the displacement desorption with propane as a desorbent in the column filled with faujasite adsorbent were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The simulation that adopted heat and mass balance and an ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) for the multicomponent adsorption equilibrium well predicted the experimental breakthrough curves of the adsorption and desorption. At the adsorption breakthrough experiments, roll-ups of ethane increased as the adsorption pressure increased and the adsorption temperature decreased. During the displacement desorption with propane in the column saturated with ethane/ethylene mixture gas, almost 100% of ethylene was obtained for a certain time interval. The adsorption strength of the desorbent greatly affected the adsorption and re-adsorption dynamics of ethylene. The re-adsorption capacity for ethylene has been greatly reduced when iso-propane, which is stronger desorbent than propane, was used as desorbent. It was found from the simulation that the performance of the displacement desorption process would be superior when the ratio of ${(q_s{\times}b)}_{C_2H_4}/{(q_s{\times}b)}_{C_3H_s}$ was 0.83, that is, the adsorption strengths of ethylene and the desorbent were similar.
