  • The purpose of present investigation is to obtain ductile cast iron with ferrite-bainite matrix by pearlite-bainite transformation treatment. Ductile cast irons having three kinds of Mn ampunt had been manufactured. Mn increased pearlite volume fraction iin as-cast ductile cast iron. Ductile cast irons of different pearlite fraction were austenitized at $875\;^{\circ}C$ for 230-350 sec or $925\;^{\circ}C$ for 130-170 sec followed by austempering at $300\;^{\circ}C$ or $400\;^{\circ}C$ for the various periods of time from 5 to 30 min. When specimen was austenitixed for 130 sec at $925\;^{\circ}C$ and for 230 sec at $875\;^{\circ}C$, pearlite was transformed into austenite. Bainite around graphite was found at $925^{\circ}C$ for 170 sec. Bainite in grain boundary of ferrite was happened at $875^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec. During the austempering process, acicular bainite was precipitated at $300^{\circ}C$ and lath bainite was precipitated at $400^{\circ}C$. Increment in manganese content restrained bainitic transformation. Retained austenie was of little quantity.

  • This study includes the efface of shielding gas types on $CO_2$ laser weldability of low carbon automotive galvanized steel. The types of shielding gas evaluated are He, $CO_2$, Ar, $N_2$, 50%Ar+50%$N_2$. The weld penetration, strength, formability(Erichsen test) of Laser weld are found to be strongly dependent upon the types of shielding gas used. Further, the maximum travel speed and flow rate to form a keyhole weld is also dependent upon types of shielding gas. The ability of shielding gas in removing plasma plume and thus increasing weld penetration is believed to be closely related with ionization/dissociation potential, which determine the period of plasma formation and disappearance. Further, thermal conductivity and reactivity of gas with molten pool also give strong effect on penetration and porosity formation which in turn affect on the formability and strength.

  • In this study, the quantitative evaluation was performed by examination for gatigue crack origin in two prepared ductile irons specimens which have different microstructures using rotary bending fatigue tester, Series A has mixed microstructure. ferrite plus pearlite, and series B has bainitic microstructure. Obtained main results are as follows. The scatterings of fatigue strength were observed on σ(sub)α-Ν diagram of both specimen series, and it is observed that scatterings of series A were more serious. It is reasonable to evaluate the size of mesocrack range by means of √A(원문참조), where A means the area of mesocrack range including globular graphite nodule. As a result of reconsideration for the fatigue data by introduction of K(sub)α-Ν diagram, the scattrings of fatigue life were, remarkably. reduced. Therefore, it is more reasonable to evaluate of mesocrack range on fatigue life by parameter K(sub)α rather than σ(sub)α.

  • The effect of strain aging on the tensile properties of API X70 linepipe steel was investigated in this study. The API X70 linepipe steel was fabricated by controlled rolling and accelerated cooling processes, and the microstructure was analyzed using optical and scanning electron microscopes and electron backscatter diffraction. Strain aging tests consisting of 1 % pre-strain and thermal aging at $200^{\circ}C$ and $250^{\circ}C$ were conducted to simulate U-forming, O-forming, Expansion(UOE) pipe forming and anti-corrosion coating processes. The API X70 linepipe steel was composed of polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, granular bainite, and bainitic ferrite whose volume fraction was dependent on the chemical composition and process conditions. As the thermal aging temperature increased, the steel specimens showed more clearly discontinuous type yielding behavior in the tensile stress-strain curve due to the formation of a Cottrell atmosphere. After pre-strain and thermal aging, the yield and tensile strengths increased and the yield-to-tensile strength ratio decreased because yielding and aging behaviors significantly affected work hardening. On the other hand, uniform and total elongations decreased after pre-strain and thermal aging since dislocation gliding was restricted by increased dislocation density after a 1 % pre-strain.

  • A series of experiments has been carried out to investigate the effect of titanium, boron and nitrogen on the microstructure and toughness of simulated heat affected zone (HAZ) in quenched and tempered (QT) type 490MPa yield strength steels. For acquiring the same strength level, the carbon content and carbon equivalent could be lowered remarkably with a small titanium and boron addition due to the hardenability effect of boron during quenching process. Following the thermal cycle of large heat input, the coarsened grain HAZ (CGHAZ) of conventional quenched and tempered (QT) type 490MPa yield strength steels exhibited a coarse bainitic or ferrite side plate structure with large prior austenite grains. While, titanium and boron bearing QT type 490MPa yield strength steels were characterized by the microstructure in the CGHAZ, consisting mainly of the fine intragranular ferrite microstructure. Toughness of the simulated HAZ was mainly controlled by the proper Ceq level, and the ratio of Ti/N rather than titanium and nitrogen contents themselves. In the titaniumboron added QT steels, the optimum Ti/N ratio for excellent HAZ toughness was around 2.0, which was much lower than the known Ti/N stoichiometric ratio, 3.4. With reducing Ti/N ratio from the stoichiometric ratio, austenite grain size in the coarse grained HAZ became finer, indicating that the effective fine precipitates could be sufficiently obtained even with lower Ti/N level by adding boron simultaneously. Along with typical titanium carbonitrides, various forms of complex titanium and boronbased precipitates, like TiNMnSBN, were often observed in the simulated CGHAZ, which may act as stable nuclei for ferrite during cooling of weld thermal cycles

  • This paper is considered about centerline segregation of API 5L steel used in pipeline. Mn/S, Nb and C were known as segregated elements in the centerline of pipe thickness. The Mn usually was accompanied by S consisting of long viscous shape. Microstructure of the centerline was composed of MnS and Nb/Ti indusions including oxide. The segregation effect in centerline region was analyzed by OM, SEM/EDS and micro Vickers hardness. The Mn, Nb and C are retarded elements in transformation from austenite to ferrite or martensite. These elements could derive a bainitic microstructure as a kind of martensite, which is different from difference and element segregation between in matrix and centerline derived from steel melting and heat treatment.

  • The variation of the mechanical properties and the formation of retained austenite with heat treatment conditions in austempered Si bearing carbon steels has been investigated. In the case of a steel containing 0.35C-1.48Si-0.95Mn, it has been found that a feather shape bainite structure of lath are obtained under a isothermal treated condition at just below the Ms temperature, and the martensite, bainitic ferrite and retained austenite of second phase particles on the ferrite matrix for a isothermal treated steels after intercritical annealing are precipitated in a linked shape. The retained austenite with $2{\mu}m$ size induced as TRIP is found to increase with increasing the formation rate of retained austenite for the intercritical annealing and high Si containing steels. The tensile strength is increased as austempering temperature increases in all isothermal treatment temperature, whereas the elongation is shown to roughly decrease as the tensile strength increases. The values of tensile strength-elongation balance have showed a marked dependence upon the elongation rather than the tensile stregth, and their values are increased for high Si containing steels and intercritical annealing condition. The most optimum result has been shown to be the tensile stregth-elongation balance of $2882.4kgf/mm^2.%$ and the elongation of 33.3% for a "B" steel in the heat treating temperature range of $780{\sim}370^{\circ}C$.

  • We were studied to the effect of alloying element and retained austenite on a mechnical properties and that used steels were composed three types composition. According to the soaking temperature, a retained austenite was pricipitated in the bainitic ferrite matrix and it was pricipitated to a flake type of about $2{\mu}m$, a mixture of massive and bar type and a flake type of about $1{\mu}m$ size. Through x-ray diffraction analysis, the amount of retained austenite was increased with addition of Si and Ni for equal heat treatment condition and it was best abundanted in the soaking temperature of $855^{\circ}C$. The balance value of strength and elongation were complexly controlled not only a retained austenite formation but also a formation characteristic and shape of the retained austenite and bainite. The balance value of strength and elongation were most satisfactory obtained with "B" and "C" specimens in a firstly heat treated at $855^{\circ}C$ and the best result was that a $2840kg/mm^2.%$ with the heat teratment condition of $855^{\circ}C-400^{\circ}C$ used for "C" specimen.

  • Effect of quenching medium on the mechanical properties of ductil iron GCD 50 has been investigated using ADI treated specimens. The specimens have been austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, followed by controlled cooling to $800^{\circ}C$ under the cooling rate of $0.05^{\circ}C/sec$, then austempered at $380^{\circ}C$, $330^{\circ}C$, $280^{\circ}C$ and $230^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The specimens treated in the salt of 5% water were found to have higher tensile strength than that of the normal salt bath. Elongation and impact energy increased in proportion to the increase of retained austenite volume fraction. The increase of cooling rate of the salt by the addition of 5% water to the salt resulted in the increase of retained austenite volume fraction and the formation of fine bainitic ferrite.

  • The aim of this study is to consider effect of weld elastic modulus on simulations of stress concentration and fatigue life for pressure vessel. The investigations include analysis with ADINA and WINLIFE softwares for whole body model about using condition of the boiler vessel. Values of weld elastic modulus were divided by 5 steps in butt weld area of the boiler vessel body. The stress concentration of the butt weld more was increased in case of higher elastic modulus of weld area because of higher difference of material properties between matrix and weld. It was concluded that the fatigue lives were decreased along increasing stress concentration due to high elastic modulus of weld. The matrix microstructure was estimated as pearlitic structure of ${\alpha}$ ferrite and pearlite. And the microstructures of welds along 5 steps of elastic modulus were estimated as bainitic fine pearlite and martensite as increasing elastic modulus.
