  • This study deals with the effects of austempering time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of ultra-high strength nanostructured bainitic steels with high carbon and silicon contents. The steels are composed of bainite, martensite and retained austenite by austempering and quenching. As the duration of austempering increases, the thickness of bainitic ferrite increases, but the thickness of retained austenite decreases. Some retained austenites with lower stability are more easily transformed to martensite during tensile testing, which has a detrimental effect on the elongation due to the brittleness of transformed martensite. With increasing austempering time, the hardness decreased and then remained stable because the transformation to nanostructured bainite compensates for the decrease in the volume fraction of martensite. Charpy impact test results indicated that increasing austempering time improved the impact toughness because the formation of brittle martensite was prevented by the decreased fraction and increased stability of retained austenite.

  • The effects of adding Ni on microstructure and mechanical properties of Nodular Indefinite Chilled Iron (NICI) were studied. Thermal fatigue, hardness, tensile properties, wear resistance, are very important factors for NICI used for hot working roll and wire rod mill. The results show that addition 4% nickel has changed pearlite to bainite. Bainite matrix is superior to pearlite matrix on wear resistance, hardness and strength and will increase performance lifetime of NICI conventional roll material. Based in the bainitic microstructure, hardness and tensile property increase up to 48 HRc and $72\;kg/mm^2$, respectively.

  • In this study, we investigated effect of austempering factors and Mn addition on mechanical properties of ADI with ferrite-bainite matrix by pearlite-bainite transformation treatment. Ductile cast iron specimens containing various of Mn were austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec or 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec and then austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ or 400$^{\circ}C$ for the various periods(5 to 30 min). Manganese increased pearlite volume fraction in as cast ductile cast iron. The obtained results are as follows ; 1) In austenitizing, hardness of sepecimens austenitized at 875$^{\circ}C$ for 350 sec was higher than that of 925$^{\circ}C$ for 160 sec. 2) In effect of austempering temperature, tensile strength and handness of specimens austempered at 300$^{\circ}C$ was higher than that of 400$^{\circ}C$. However, elongation had reverse tendency. 3) Increasing austempering time decreased hardness due to the increment of bainite and retained austenite fractions. However, toughness are increased.

  • As ships become larger, thicker and higher tensile steel plate are used in shipyard. Though special chemical compositions are required for high-tensile steels, recently they are made by the TMCP (Thermo-Mechanical control process) methodology. The increased Yield / Tensile strength of TMCP steels compared to the normalized steel of same composition are induced by suppressing the formation of Ferrite and Pearlite in favor of strong and tough Bainite while being transformed from Austenite. But this Bainite phase could be vanished by another additional thermal cycle like welding and heating. As thermal deformations are deeply related by yield stress of material, the study for prediction of plate deformation by heating should niflect the principle of TMCP steels. The present study is related to the development of an algorithm which could calculate inherent strain. In this algorithm, not only the mechanical principles of thermal deformations, but also the initial portion of Bainite is considered when calculating inherent strain. Distortion analysis results by these values showed good agreements with experimental results for normalized steels and TMCP steels during welding and heating. This algorithm has also been used to create an inherent strain database of steels in Class rule.

  • The study has been carried out under various experimental conditions to investigate mechanical properties by the transformation conditions of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron. The amount of retained austenite and bainite after quenching was determined by the X-ray diffractometer and the point counting method and which the microstructure was investigated by the S.E.M. The mechanical properties of austempered low-alloy ductile cast iron can be varried over a comparatively wide range by changing the transformation conditions. During isothermal transformation of austenite in the bainite region, low-alloy ductile cast iron austempered at holding time of 40 minute has the maximum volume fraction(24%) of retained austenite in the cast iron matrix and which optimum values of mechanical properties correspond to the maximum amount of retained austenite, which falls with decreasing transformation temperature. The low values of both tensile strength and elongation in the initial stage of bainite transformation can be explained by premature fracture of tensile specimens and the tensile strength, hardness and elongation do not change considerably after a certain period. With a decreasing transformation temperature the tensile strength increase while the elongation decrease, especially the elongation has the maximum value at temperature $370^{\circ}C$.

  • In this study, it was examined the relationship between the microstructure, fatigue properties, mechanical properties and retained austenite volume of Mo-Ni ADI corresponding to various austempering temperatures. When the austempering temperature is increased to $370^{\circ}C$, acicular bainite structure was found to be transformed to feathery bainite structure. But at the austempering temperature of $420^{\circ}C$, the dissolved bainite lath was showned. Up to the austempering temperature of $370^{\circ}C$, the volume of retained austenite was increased. However at the austempering temperature of $420^{\circ}C$ a large amount of retained austenite was decreased. In this study, the retained austenite volume was determined by XRD(X-ray diffraction). It was observed that the optimum fatigue properties can be obtained at the condition of austempering temperature $370^{\circ}C$. Under the such conditions, fatigue limit determined as the value of 290 MPa, tensile strength 877MPa elongation 6%, hardness 285(BHN), impact values(CVN) 9.2J and retained austenite volume 30.3%, respectively.

  • Impact toughness and fracture behavior were studied in five kinds of non-heat treating steels containing bainite; standard(0.25C-1.5Mn-0.5Cr-0.2Mo-0.15V), high V(0.3V), Ni(0.5Mn-2Ni), W(0.4W instead of Mo), and high C-Ni(0.35C-0.5Mn-2Ni) steels. The good hardness and impact toughness balance was exhibited in the $1100^{\circ}C$-rolled condition, while the impact toughness was deteriorated due to coarse grained microstructure in the $1200^{\circ}C$-rolled condition. The impact toughness decreased with increasing the hardness in all steels studied. The fracture behavior was also basically identical, that is, the fracture area was divided into 3 zones; shear and fibrous zone, fracture transition zone with ductile dimples and cleavage cracks, where the cracks initiate and grow to critical size, unstable cleavage fracture propagation zone. The energy absorbed for the critical crack formation through the plastic deformation inside the plastic zone in front of the notch root contributed to a mostly significant portion of the total impact energy.

  • In this study, three kinds of linepipe steels were processed by changing the amount of Mo and Nb to investigate the effects on microstructures, tensile and Charpy impact properties. All the specimens consisted of acicular ferrite, granular bainite and secondary phases such as martensite and austenite constituents (MA). The increase in Mo raised the volume fractions of the granular bainite and MA, and raised the number of fine precipitates, which increased the yield and tensile strengths and decreased the upper self energy and energy transition temperatures. In the steel having less Mo and more Nb, the volume fractions of the granular bainite and MA decreased, and a finer microstructure was observed. This microstructure suppressed the formation of separation during Charpy impact testing and led to a higher upper shelf energy and lower energy transition temperature, while the yield and tensile strengths were lower than those of the steels with more Mo and less Nb.

  • The relationships between the microstructure changes, retained austenite volume and elevated temperature tensile properties of Mo-Ni-Cu ADI corresponding to various austempering temperatures and time were investigated, After the $250^{\circ}C$ tensile test for the test piece austempered at $270^{\circ}C$ the accicular bainite structure was observed blunted under room temperature microscope. In the case of $370^{\circ}C$ austempering, the feathery bainite lath spacing was observed broadened. But after the $450^{\circ}C$ tensile test, bainitic features could not be observed. As the testing temperature increased, retained austenite volume tested at room temperature decreased. Especially, after the $450^{\circ}C$ tensile test retained austenite volume approached nearly to zero. A little higher tensile properties appeared at $250^{\circ}C$ testing than those at room temperature.

  • The effect of ADI heat treatment conditions on the core microstructures and mechanical properties of GCD 45 has been investigated. In the case of $25{\ss}{\AE}$ in diameter, it has been found that pearlite structure is not obtained, and the matrix is consisted of graphite, bainite and retained austenite. Upon cooling isothermally from $900^{\circ}C$, the core structure of 35 mm in diameter is converted to pearlite. However, the structure is transformed to bainite after slow cooling from $900^{\circ}C$ to $800^{\circ}C$.
