  • This paper is concerned with the comparison of forging characteristics between forward and backward processes, through the three-dimensional finite element simulation, for the aluminum powder forging of engine pistons. Starting from the theoretical formulation of velocity and temperature fields in the sintered preform during the process, we examine the comparative distributions of relative density, effective stress and temperature as well as the variations of total forging load and total volume reduction. Through the comparative results, we find out that the forward method provides better forging characteristics than the backward method.

  • In this paper, we devise both methods supporting interactive VCR-like functions for MPEG stream and minimizing the storage space. Specifically, we proposed both methods to efficiently stripe MPEG stream into multiple disks, and an access strategy to retrieve the distributed streams over the disks. To accurately locate the streams to be referred to, we introduce a table indexing the location. When client request Fast Forward(FF)/Fast Backward(FB), VOD(Video on Demand) server refer to this index table supporting FF/FB functions. Experimental result shows that the proposed method can reduce the additional storage space needed when VOD server services FF/FB functions.

  • The forming characteristics of cup-rod combined extrusion process were investigated with process parameter change. Simultaneous forward rod extrusion and backward cup extrusion was conducted with magnesium alloy, AZ31B. Process parameters such as forward extrusion ratio, backward extrusion ratio, and working temperature were controlled in a specific region and the effects of the parameter change were examined. Surface crack was developed in a certain state of the process parameters combination. The crack-free forming limit of the alloy in the combined process was disclosed by the parameter study. The microstructures of the initial and extruded workpieces were observed.

  • We proposed a 2-step neural network approach for estimating machining parameters of electric discharge wire cut. The first step net, which is described as a backward neuro-estimation, is designed for estimating coarse cutting parameters while the second phase net, as a polishing forward neuro-estimation, is utilized for determining fine parameters. Sequential estimation procedure, based on backward and forward net, is performed using the net's approximation capability which is M to 1 and 1 to M mapping property. Experimental results an given to evaluate the accuracy of the proposed 2-step neuro-estimation.

  • In the simultaneous forward-backward extrusion the effects of some process variables including area reduction, stroke advance, materials(Al 2024 and commercial pure copper) on the extrusion load, plastic flow and height ratio of upper to lower extruded parts are experimentally investigated and analyzed. Grid-marking technique is employed to visualize the plastic flow. The influence of using split and original specimen on the extrusion load and height ratio is evaluated by experiments. Experimental results show that the plastic flow if oriented to the part of lower area reduction in the begining but it is usually variated during the overall process. The configurations of plastic deformation and plastic flow are dependent on the working materials and the lubricational conditions.

  • A UBET analysis has been carried out to predict the forming load and the extruded length of forward and backward extrusion of hexagonal and trochoidal wrench colts. For the upper bound load and the average length of the extruded billets are determined by minimizing the total energy consumption rate which is a function of unknown velocities and parameters at each element. Experiments are carried out with antimony-lead billets at room temperature using hexagonal and trochoidal shaped punches. The theoretical predictions of the forming load and the extruded length are in good agreement with the experimetal results.

  • Based on novel Galerkin's technique, the theoretical study gives a prediction to estimate the vibrations of FG rotating cylindrical shell. Terms of ring supports have been introduced by a polynomial function. Three different laws of volume fraction are utilized for the vibration of cylindrical shells. Variation frequencies with the locations of ring supports have been analyzed and these ring supports are placed round the circumferential direction. The base of this approach is an approximate estimation of eigenvalues of proper functions which are the results of solutions of vibrating equation. Each longitudinal wave number corresponds to a particular boundary condition. The results are given in tabular and graphical forms. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing length-to-radius ratio. There is a new form of frequencies is obtained for different positions of ring supports, which is bell shaped. Moreover, on increasing the rotating speed, the backward frequencies increases and forward frequencies decreases.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the effects of depending on variations of speed in backward walking on lower extremities muscle. For this study, 30 members were randomly divided into three groups; groupI(n=10, forward walking: 5km/h), groupII(n=10, backward walking: 5km/h), groupIII(n=10, backward walking: 2.5km/h). This exercise was performed to 30 minutes 4 times a week for 4 weeks. This study was measured before the exercise and after 4 weeks. The result of this study are as follows. The muscle activity of rectus femoRIS was higher in backward walking group(p<.01) than in forward walking group and it was the highest at groupII(p<.001). The quadriceps muscle strength of thigh was higher in backward walking group(p<.01) than in forward walking group and it was the highest at groupII(p<.001). From these results, backward walking training was effective on muscle activity, strength of thigh muscle. Although fast speed backward walking was most effective, low speed backward walking that compare with forward walking was effective.

  • W. S. CHAE, Ground Reaction Force Charateristics During Forward and Backward Walking Over 20 Degree Ramp. Korean Journal of Sport Biomechanics, Vol. 18, No. 3, pp. 71-82, 2008. The purpose of this study was to compare GRF characteristics during forward and backward walking over 20 degree ramp. Temporal parameters, GRFs, displacement of center of pressure (DCP), and loading and decay rates were determined for each trial. The results showed that the vertical GRF in BD during RTO was significantly greater than those found in FU. This reults indicated that GRF patterns may be changed by different walking conditions and altering position of ankle, knee, and center of mass throughout the walking cycle. The DCP during $RHC_2$-LHC in antero-posterior direction for downward was smaller than the corresponding value for upward condition. It' seems that the ankle and knee joints are locked in an awkward fashion at the toe contact to compensate for imbalance. Reducing the magnitude of loading rate can be achieved by walking in the backward direction. Accordingly, the results can be a benefit if one is suffering from an impact-type injury.

  • Alzheimer's disease (AD) symptoms are being treated by early diagnosis, where we can only slow the symptoms and research is still undergoing. In consideration, using T1-weighted images several classification models are proposed in Machine learning to identify AD. In this paper, we consider the improvised feature selection, to reduce the complexity by using wrapping techniques and Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM). This present work used the subcortical and cortical features of 278 subjects from the ADNI dataset to identify AD and sMRI. Multi-class classification is used for the experiment i.e., AD, EMCI, LMCI, HC. The proposed feature selection consists of Forward feature selection, Backward feature selection, and Combined PCA & RBM. Forward and backward feature selection methods use an iterative method starting being no features in the forward feature selection and backward feature selection with all features included in the technique. PCA is used to reduce the dimensions and RBM is used to select the best feature without interpreting the features. We have compared the three models with PCA to analysis. The following experiment shows that combined PCA &RBM, and backward feature selection give the best accuracy with respective classification model RF i.e., 88.65, 88.56% respectively.
