  • This paper is concerned with the analysis of the forming load characteristics of a forward-backward can extrusion process. The analysis in this paper is extended to the selection of press frame capacity for producing efficiently final product at low cost. The possible extrusion processes to shape a forward-backward can part with different outer diameters are categorized to investigate quantitatively the forming load, forming energy and maximum pressure exerted on the die-material interface. The categorized processes are composed of combined and/or some basic extrusion processes. After the analysis of the forming load characteristics, the frame capacity of press suitable for a selected process could be determined along with securing the load capacity and with considering productivity. In addition, it is also suggested that different load capacities be selected for different dimensions of a part such as the wall thickness in forward direction. The work in this paper could be a good reference for analysis of complex extrusion and selection of proper frame capacity of press to achieve low production cost and thus high productivity.

  • As today's business environment has become more and more competitive, forward as well as backward flows of products among members belonging to a supply chain have been increased. The backward flows of products, which are common in most industries, result from increasing amount of products that are returned, recalled, or need to be repaired. Effective management for the backward flows of products has become an important issue for businesses because of opportunities for simultaneously enhancing profitability and customer satisfaction from returned products. Since third party logistics service providers (3PLs) are playing an important role in reverse logistics operations, they should perform two simultaneous logistics operations for a number of different clients who want to improve their logistics operations for both forward and reverse flows. In this case, distribution networks have been independently designed with respect to either forward or backward flows so far. This paper proposes a mixed integer programming model for the design of network integrating both forward and reverse logistics. Since the network design problem belongs to a class of NP-hard problems, we present an efficient heuristic algorithm based on genetic algorithm (GA), of which the performance is compared to the lower bound by Lagrangian relaxation. Finally, the validity of proposed algorithm is tested using numerical examples.

  • This paper presents a study of cold combined forward-backward extrusion product. The case of product with thin wall in piercing process occur defects of deformation and breakdown during piercing process and the center web of product with thin thickness cause flow defect. Such defect is made by the difference of material flow. Methods of the material flow control in the two directions and forming process to remove this flow defect is proposed. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is examined by comparison experiment and finite element simulation.

  • A bi-directional symmetric prediction technique has been developed to improve coding efficiency of B-slice and to reduce the computational complexity required to estimate two motion vectors. On the contrary to the conventional bi-directional mode which encodes both forward and backward motion vectors, it only encodes a single forward motion vector, and the missing backward motion vector is derived in a symmetric way from the forward motion vector using temporal distance between forward/backward reference frames to and from the current B picture. Since the backward motion vector is derived from the forward motion vector, it can halve the computational complexity for motion estimation, and also reduces motion vector data to encode. This technique always derives the backward motion vector from the forward motion vector, however, there are cases when the forward motion vector is better to be derived from the backward motion vector especially in scene changes. In this paper, we generalize the idea of the symmetric coding with forward motion vector coding, and propose a new symmetric coding with backward motion vector coding and adaptive selection between the conventional symmetric mode and the proposed symmetric mode based on rate-distortion optimization.

  • Unlike TCP Reno, TCP Vegas recognizes network congestion through the measuring of RTT (Round Trip Time) and decides the main congestion control parameters, such as Windows size. But, congestion avoidance scheme of Vegas poorly reflects asymmetric characteristics of packet path because TCP Vegas uses the measuring of RTT that reflects forward/backward packet transmission delay as a forward delay. The RTT can't infer the forward/backward transmission delay variation because it only measures the packet's turn around time. In this paper, We have designed and implemented a new Vegas congestion control algorithm that can distinguish forward/backward network congestion. We have modified the source codes of TCP Vegas in Linux 2.6 kernel and verified their performance.

  • Comprehensive investigation according to the two kinds of blades is systematically carried out for a design of the centrifugal blower. The motivation of this work is due to demand of enhanced flow rate with higher inlet pressure, such as air purifiers adopting several filters. It is observed that flow rate of the blower with forward blades is larger than that of the system with backward blades. The reason is due to larger outlet velocity from the rotating forward blades and the tendency is validated by a parallel experiment with a wind tunnel. Numerical analysis for the blower system shows detail information between the blades and inside the casing. A series of figures to show the flow details offers deep understanding of a centrifugal blower with the two different blades.

  • Large variation in electrocardiogram (ECG) waveforms continues to present challenges in defining R-wave locations in ECG signals. This research presents a procedure to extract the R-wave locations by forward-backward (FB) algorithm and classify the arrhythmic beat conditions by using RR intervals. The FB algorithm shows forward and backward searching rules from QRS onset and eliminates lower-amplitude signals near the baseline using a statistical process control concept. The proposed algorithm was trained the optimal parameters by using MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (MITDB), and it was verified by actual Holter ECG signals from a local hospital. The signals are classified into normal (N) and three arrhythmia beat types including premature ventricular contraction (PVC), ventricular flutter/fibrillation (VF), and second-degree heart block (BII) beat. This work produces 98.54% accuracy in the detection of R-wave location; 98.68% for N beats; 91.17% for PVC beats; and 87.2% for VF beats in the collected Holter ECG signals, and the results are better than what are reported in literature.

  • In this study, the performance of a low-floor midsize bus under development is predicted through simulations. To predict the vehicle's acceleration, maximum speed, and uphill driving performance, a forward simulator which calculates the vehicle power is developed. Also we verify the forward simulator by comparing simulations and test result for benchmarking vehicle. To predict the fuel consumption, we use a backward simulator for a specified road cycle. However, to predict the fuel consumption using the backward simulation the engine fuel-consumption map is needed. The engine fuel-consumption map extracting data from a similar sized diesel engine is used by re-scaling the maximum torque. As a result, we simulate the vehicle's forward performance with a new engine. Further, we simulated the backward performance to optimize the fuel efficiency and gearshift timing.

  • A geometrical description method is proposed to represent the process of the forward selection and backward elimination methods among many variable selection methods for multiple regression models. This graphical method shows the process of the forward selection and backward elimination on the first and second quadrants, respectively, of half circle with a unit radius. At each step, the SSR is represented by the norm of vector and the extra SSR or partial determinant coefficient is represented by the angle between two vectors. Some lines are dotted when the partial F test results are statistically significant, so that statistical analysis could be explored. This geometrical description can be obtained the final regression models based on the forward selection and backward elimination methods. And the goodness-of-fit for the model could be explored.
