  • Electron channeling contrast imaging (ECCI) is one of the imaging techniques in scanning electron microscopy based on a variation in electron backscattering yield depending on the direction of the primary electron beam with respect to the crystal lattice. The ECCI provides not only observation of the distribution of individual grains and grain boundaries but also identification of the defects such as dislocations, twins, and stacking faults. The ECCI at the interface between recrystallized and deformed region of shot peening treated nickel clearly demonstrates the microstructural evolution during the recrystallization including original grain boundaries, and thus can provide better insight into the recrystallization behavior.

  • The microstructure and texture of TiN coatings on a Ni-based super-alloy were characterized by the automated version of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), EBSD techniques were used to investigate the very fine TiN grain shape and crystal orientation. This study confirmed that EBSD techniques provide a very useful tool for characterization of coating materials. The TiN grains had a special texture, a {001}-fiber texture in the coating layer. It was also found that, in severe environments, the coating performance of equiaxial and randomly oriented TiN is superior to that with columnar structures.

  • We propose a spectral-efficient coordinated direct and relayed transmission (CDRT) scheme for a relay-assisted downlink system with two users. The proposed scheme is based on backscatter communication (BC) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique. With the proposed BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme, both users can receive one packet within one time slot. In contrast, in existing NOMA-CDRT schemes, the far user is only able to receive one packet in two time slots due to the half-duplex operation of the relay. We investigate the outage of the BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme, and derive the outage probability expressions in closed-form based on Gamma distribution approximation and Gaussian approximation. Numerical results show that the analytical results are accurate and the BC-NOMA-CDRT scheme outperforms the conventional NOMA-CDRT significantly.

  • Multi-period low-emissivity (low-e) filters based on [TiO$_2$|Ti|Ag|TiO$_2$] layer structure were designed and fabricated by a RF magnetron sputtering method. Optical, structural, chemical, and electrical properties were investigated with various analytical tools. Interface layers consisting of Ag, Ti, and O were observed next to Ag layers by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS) analysis. The results show that Ti layers of ~ 1.8 nm protect the Ag layers from oxidation better than those of ~ 1 nm and the optical spectra of the filter with thicker Ti layers are in agreement with the simulated one. The average transmittance of a low-e filter with thicker Ti layers is reduced and the sheet resistance is slightly increased due to the increased Ti thickness.

  • The purpose of this study is to integrate and visualize using mapping techniques based on precise seabed geomorphology, seafloor backscattering images and high-resolution underwater images of the nearshore area around the Dokdo, in the East Sea. We have been obtained the precise topography map using multibeam echosounder system around the nearshore area(~50 m) of the southern part of the Seodo. Side scan sonar survey for analysis seafloor backscattering images was carried out in the same area of topography data. High-resolution underwater images(zone(a), zone(b), zone(c)) were taken in significant habitat scope of the nearshore area of the southern part of the Seodo. Using the results of bathymetry, seafloor backscattering images, high-resolution underwater images, we performed an integrated visualization about the nearshore area of the Dokdo. The integrated visualizing techniques are possible to make the seabed characteristic mapping results of the nearshore area of the Dokdo. The integrated visualization results present more complex and reliable information than separate geological products for seabed environmental mapping study and it is useful to understand the relation between seafloor characteristics and topographic environments of the study area. The integrated visualizing techniques and mapping analysis need to study sustainably and periodically, for effective monitoring of the nearshore ecosystem of the Dokdo.

  • A spin valve structure of Ta/NiFe/CoFe/Cu/CoFe/Ru/CoFe/FeMn/Ta which has a synthetic antiferromagnet (CoFe/Ru/CoFe), was fabricated by using a magnetron sputtering system. The thickness and composition of magnetic free and pinned layers affect the magnetic properties such as exchange interaction strength of each layer and so on. Even though Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) has advantages of quantitative and non-destructive analysis, it is almost impossible to determine the thickness and composition of magnetic thin films using lBS because of its poor mass resolution for a higher atom number (Z>20). In this study, quantitative analysis of the element composition and thickness for the spin valve sample was performed by combining both Proton Induced X-ray Emission Spectrometry (PIXE), which is one of element specific analysis techniques, and grazing-exit RBS with a highly improved depth resolution and absolute quantitative analysis. For the quantitative analysis, standardization of PIXE was carried out with NiFe, CoFe, and FeMn layers, which are one of constituent layers of spin valve films. Through PIXE standardization and the aid of PHE experimental results of the spin valve sample, ire overlapped signal in a grazing-exit RBS spectrum were successfully resolved and the thickness of the Ru layer was determined with a resolution of ∼1 .

  • In order to obtain high resolution images, a focusing ultrasonic transducer operated in very high frequency (VHF) range was fabricated and its characteristics were evaluated. A 9-${\mu}m$ thick PVDF film with only one metalized surface for electric ground was adhered to a CCP (Copper-clad polyimide) film by using epoxy. It was pressed by a metal ball to form a concave surface and its rear side was filled with the epoxy. The radius of curvature and the f-number of the fabricated transducer are 7.5 mm and 1.7, respectively. The pulse-echo measurement results from a target located at the focal point showed that the frequency bandwidth was 35.0 MHz and the insertion loss near the peak frequency of approximately 40 MHz was about 60 dB. Those values agreed well with the simulation results by the KLM equivalent circuit analysis including the effect of the epoxy bonding layer. When the image of thin copper lines by the 35 MHz transducer of the UBM (Ultrasonic Backscattering Microscope) system was compared with the image by the transducer fabricated in this study, the fabricated transducer was observed that the axial resolution was improved although the lateral resolution was degraded.

  • In this study, the optimization of the manufacturing process for the oil-in-water emulsification of rice bran oil was performed by response surface methodology (RSM) using varying amounts of the emulsifier (0.05-0.25%), varying rotation speeds of the homomixer (4,000-8,000 rpm), and varying water to oil ratios (0.8-1.6%) as independent variables, and the emulsion stability index (ESI) as the dependent variable. The optimization conditions predicted by the RSM model were 0.2%g of the total amount of the rice bran oil emulsion, emulsified at the homomixer rotation speed of 6,700 rpm using a water to oil ratio of 1:3. The ESI of the rice bran oil emulsion prepared under the optimized conditions was 95.7%, which was similar to the predicted value of 94.4% obtained by the RSM model. The transmission stability and the backscattering values were found to agree with each other over time and the turbiscan stability index was less than 0.7, indicating that the aggregation and upper floatation were less while the dispersion stability was maintained.

  • The Wangdol-cho area, in the Hupo Bank, plays a very important role in main fishing grounds, leisure tourism and marine environmental researches of the East Sea. We analyzed the detailed bathymetry and classified the seabed characteristics of the Wangdol-cho area, based on seafloor backscattering images and sediment grain size. The Hupo Bank is developed in parallel with the eastern coastal line of Korean peninsula, and the shallowest area (Wangdol-cho) of the Hupo Bank is located along the eastern part of Hupo Port. The Wangdol-cho comprises three summits; north summit, middle summit, and south summit. The middle summit area among the three summits has the most shallow water depth with minimum about 6 m. The north summit shows about 8 m minimum depth and the south summit about 9 m. The bathymetry data around three summits represent undulating seabeds with many scattered underwater reefs and shallow water depth. The area between the underwater reefs, the flat seafloor in the northeastern part of the survey site, and the western steep slope area have relatively coarse sediments such as sandy gravel and gravelly sand. The bathymetry in the western side of the Wangdol-cho shows steep slope seabed, extending to the Hupo Basin. Fine sediments including mud and silty sand occur in the Hupo Basin area of the survey site. The submarine detailed topography and the analysis of the seafloor characteristics of the survey area are expected to contribute to management for marine environmental researches and sustainable use of ecosystems in the Wangdol-cho.

  • Proton Engineering Frontier Project (PEFP) has supplied the metal ions to users by using an installed metal ion implanter of 120 keV. At present a feasibility study is being performed for a cobalt ion implantation. For a cobalt ion extraction we studied to sustain the high temperature($648^{\circ}C$) for metal ions vaporization from a cobalt chloride powder by using an alumina crucible in the ion source. The temperature condition of the crucible was satisfied with the plasma generation at the arc current of 120V and EHC power of 250W. The extracted beam current of $Co^+$ ions was dependent on the arc current in the plasma. The maximum beam current was $100{\mu}A$ at 0.18A of the arc current. The 3 peak currents of the extracted ions such as $Co^+$, $CoCl^+$ and $Cl^+$ were obtained by adjusting a mass analyzing magnet and the $Co^+$ ion beam peak current fraction as around 70% in the sum of the peak currents. The fluence of the implanted cobalt ions at the $10{\mu}A$ of the beam current and 90 minutes of the implantation time into an aluminum sample as measured around $1.74{\times}10^{17}#/cm^2$ by a quantitative analysis method of RBS (Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry).
