As semiconductor devices become highly integrated and process difficulty increases, the need for highly sensitive sensors that can detect micro leaks is increasing. However, the noise contained in the CCD sensor itself acts as an obstacle to detecting fine leaks. In this study, integration time was changed for each condition, the sensor was cooled to 0℃, and the dark voltage level was measured to confirm through experiment the characteristics of the temporal noise included in the CCD sensor, a component of OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy). When integration time was reduced from 30msec to 10msec, the dark voltage level decreased by about 20.5 % from an average of 151.5mV to 120.5mV. In the case of cooling device, Peltier elements were selected because of their simple structure and small size. During temperature cooling, the target temperature was controlled to within ±0.5℃ through PID control. When cooled from 20℃ to 0℃ using this cooling device, it was confirmed that the dark voltage level decreased by about 7% from an average of 147.0mV to 137.0mV.
Listening effort represents the listener's attention, stress, required cognition resource, and mental exertion to understand a speech in various situations. Recently, it has been focused to evaluate an effectiveness of hearing aids and cochlear implant. The physiologic measures, such as heart rate, skin conductance, electroencephalography, and pupil dilation, have been used to objectively measure listening effort. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of temporal and spectral heart rate variabilities to measure listening effort to understand speech in the presence of background noise. The results showed that several heart rate variabilities significantly increased as increasing background noise level. Finally, the heart rate variability can be used as an objective tool to measure listening efforts.
Background and Objectives: Noise levels and room acoustic parameters at a tertiary referral hospital, Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) in Korea, are investigated. Materials and Methods: Through a questionnaire, acoustically problematic rooms are identified. Noise levels in emergency rooms (ERs) and intensive care units (ICUs) are measured over about three days. Acoustically critical and problematic rooms in the otolaryngology department are measured including examination rooms, operating rooms, nurse stations, receptions, and patient rooms. Results: The A-weighted equivalent noise level, LAeq, ranges from 54 to 56 dBA, which is at least 10 dB lower than the noise levels of 65 to 73 dBA measured in American ERs. In an ICU, the noise level for the first night was 66 dBA, which came down to 56 dBA for the next day. The noise levels during three different ear surgeries vary from 57 to 62 dBA, depending on the use of surgical drills and suctions. The noise levels in a patient room is found to be 47 dBA, while the nurse stations and the receptions have high noise levels up to 64 dBA. The reverberation times in an operation room, examination room, and single patient room are found to be below 0.6 s. Conclusions: At SNUH, the nurse stations and receptions were found to be quite noisy. The ERs were quieter than in the previous studies. The measured reverberation times seemed low enough but some other nurse stations and examination rooms were not satisfactory according to the questionnaire.

Ambient noise as a background noise in the ocean has been well known for its the various and irregular signal characteristics. Generally, these signals we treated as noise and they are analyzed through stochastical level if they don't include definite sinusoidal signals. This study is to see how ocean ambient noise can be analyzed by the chaotic analysis technique. The chaotic analysis is carried out with underwater ambient noise obtained in areas near the Korean Peninsula. The calculated physical parameters of time series signal are as follows: histogram, self-correlation coefficient, delay time, frequency spectrum, sonogram, return map, embedding dimension, correlation dimension, Lyapunov exponent, etc. We investigate the chaotic pattern of noises from these parameters. From the embedding dimensions of underwater noises, the assesment of underwater noise by chaotic analysis shows similar results if they don't include a definite sinusoidal signal. However, the values of Lyapunov exponent (divergence exponent) are smaller than that of random noise signal. As a result we confirm the possibility of classification of underwater noise using Lyapunov analysis.
Magneto-cardiogram(MCG) signals may be highly distorted by the environmental noise, such as power-line interference, broadband white noise, surrounding magnetic noise, and baseline wondering. Several kinds of digital filters and noise cancellation methods have been designed and realized by many researchers, but these methods gave some problems that the original signal may be distorted by digital filter due to the wideband characteristics of background noise. To eliminate noise effectively without distortion of MCG signals, we performed multi-level frequency decomposition using wavelet packets and local adaptive noise cancellation in each local frequency range. In addition to the proposed wavelet filter to eliminate these various non-stationary noise elements, the local adaptive filter using the least mean square(LMS) algorithm and the soft threshold do-noising method are introduced in this paper. The signal to noise ratio(SNR) and the reconstruction square error(RSE) are calculated to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compared with the results of the conventional wavelet filter and adaptive filter. The experimental results show that the proposed local adaptive filtering method is better than the conventional methods.
A research project was conducted to assess the levels of noise exposed to "Noraebang" users and potential hazards to noise-induced hearing loss due to commercial Noraebang noise. A two-way, mixed-factors factorial design was employed for the experiment using independent variables of "noise source" (no- singer, 1-singer, and 2-singer conditions) and "music type" (Trot, Ballad, and Rock music) with 18 normal hearing subjects. Each singer group sang 5 popular songs of each music type in each signing condition, whereas background music was just played for the no-singer condition. For each music played/sung, equivalent continuous sound pressure levels and maximum sound pressure levels were measured for data analysis purposes. Pure-tone audiometry was applied for measuring subjects' hearing threshold levels before and after exposure to Noraebgang noise. The statistical analyses indicate that average continuous noise levels due to Noraebang leisure environment were very serious, especially when two people were singing (higher than 95 dBA). Furthermore, maximum noise levels often exceeded the OSHA's non-premissible 115 dBA level. Worse yet, hearing loss assessment implies that Noraebang facilities may pose a serious threat to noise-induced hearing loss, based on 6-8 dB loss at 125 Hz and 8 dB loss at 4000 Hz after about 1-hour Noraebang noise exposure.

This study aims to investigate the preferred sound level of water sound for various levels of open-plan-office noise regarding soundscape quality and speech privacy. And assessment of the work efficiency of the water sound. For the laboratory experiment, office noise was recorded using a binaural microphone in a real open-plan office. For the assessment of the soundscape quality and speech privacy, Overall Soundscape Quality (OSQ) and Listening Difficulty (LD) were evaluated under three different sound levels (55 dBA, 60 dBA, and 65 dBA) and five different signal-to-noise ratios (SNR -10 dB, -5 dB, 0 dB, +5 dB, and +10 dB). After the evaluation, the preferred SNR was proposed according to OSQ and LD. For the assessment of to work efficiency of water sound, this study evaluated the cognitive performance of both of the condition noise only and combine the water sound with office noise. The results showed that LD increased as the water sound level increased, but OSQ decreased. When the water sound level was more than the office noise level, the OSQ decreased from noise only. Therefore, considering OSQ and LD, the preferred SNR of water sound was -5 dB for all noise levels. At the preferred level of water sound, the cognitive performance results were shown to decrease at 55 dBA compared to noise only, but at 60 dBA and 65 dBA combine the water sound results were increased than the noise only.

In this paper, we present a visual quality enhancement technique for conventional three-dimensional (3D) photon counting integral imaging using background noise removal algorithm. Photon counting imaging can detect a few photons from desired objects and visualize them under severely photon-starved conditions such as low light level environment. However, when a lot of photons are generated from background, it is difficult to detect photons from desired objects. Thus, the visual quality of the reconstructed image may be degraded. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new photon counting imaging method that removes unnecessary background noise and detects photons from only desired objects. In addition, integral imaging can be used to obtain 3D information and visualize the 3D image by statistical estimations such as maximum likelihood estimation. To prove and evaluate our proposed method, we implement the optical experiment and calculate mean square error.

The auditory thresholds for 7 specimens of the sharp toothed eel Muraensox cinerus were measured at 5 frequencies by heartbeat conditioning method using pure tones coupled with a delayed electric shock. The audible range of the sharp toothed eel extended from 80Hz to 300Hz with the best sensitivity around 80Hz and 100Hz. In addition, the auditory thresholds over 200Hz increased rapidly. The mean auditory thresholds of the sharp toothed eel at the test frequencies of 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz and 300Hz were 87dB, 86dB, 105dB and 126dB, respectively. Auditory masking was determined for the sharp toothed eel by using masking stimuli with the spectrum level range of about 70~80dB (0dB re $1{\mu}Pa/\sqrt{Hz}$). According to white noise level, the auditory thresholds increased as compared with thresholds in a quiet background noise. The noise spectrum level at the start of masking was distributed at the range of about 64dB within 80~100Hz. Critical ratio ranged from minimum 24dB to maximum 40dB at test frequencies of 80Hz~200Hz.
