  • Background: The purpose of the present study was to determine whether balance training combined with light touch improves the postural sway and gait speed in stroke patients. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial Study Methods: The current study included 40 stroke patients, who were randomly divided into two groups: the balance training with light touch (LT) group (n=20) and the balance training with heavy touch (HT) group (n=20). Both groups performed balance training on a stable and unstable ground. Additionally, the LT group provided light touch stimulation, and the HT group provided heavy touch stimulation. All the participants underwent 20 sessions of STS training (thirty minutes, five days per week for four weeks). In this study, postural sway was measured using a force platform, and walking speed was measured using a 10 meter walk test. Results: The improvements in postural sway and gait speed were observed to be significantly greater in the LT group, compared to the HT group (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of the current study imply that balance training combined with light touch is a beneficial and effective therapeutic modality that can be employed to improve the postural sway and gait speed in stroke patients.

  • In serious crimes, bloody fingerprints are crucial evidence that make links between suspects and victims. There have been many studies related to bloody fingerprints for a long time. There are many comparative studies for effectiveness of Acid Fuchsin and Acid Yellow 7, but nothing about Eosin-Y in this country. Acid Fuchsin is a useful reagent that has unique red color distinguishing from light colored background. but it is useless on dark surfaces. In order to make it visible, we should use BVDA Gel lifters. On the contrary this, Acid Yellow 7 makes stronger fluorescence on a dark background. In this study, we got the conclusion that Eosin-Y is more useful than the others not only on dark background but also light background.

  • We have developed a measurement method of the refractive index profile of an optical fiber by using diffraction phase microscopy. In the microscope system, the reference light was extracted directly from the probe light that passed through the sample by means of pinhole filtering with a diffraction grating. The spatial interference pattern produced by the probe light and the reference light was processed to generate the phase image of the sample fiber. The index profile was obtained by the inverse Abel transform of the phase profile. In order to remove the background phase that originated from the index difference between the cladding and the surrounding medium, the background phase was calculated from the phase data of the cladding to make a core phase profile that can be directly transformed to the index profile of the core without the full phase image that includes the entire cladding part.

  • We develope a high repetition rate, short distance, optical range finder for surface roughness measurements of large structures, such as a highway road, etc. For range measurement based on a triangulation principle, we use a light emitting diode and an one dimensional Position sensitive photodetector for a light source and an angle detector of the reflected light at the object, respectively. The range finder has automatic power control and electrical background noise rejection capabilities which enable it to overcome variations of an object reflectance and to eliminate time-varying, as well as constant, background light noises. Our experimental results show less than ${\pm}1.5mm$ of measurement errors regardless of an object reflectance, for $22{\sim}38cm$ object ranges which are determined by considering the installation of the range finder and the depth of surface roughness.

  • Background: Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge has been used in traditional medicine. The type of light source has an effect on the growth properties and composition of functional compounds in plants. In this study, we analyzed the effects of different artificial light sources on the growth characteristics as well as antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of S. miltiorrhiza. Methods and Results: Seedlings of S. miltiorrhiza were grown under various artificial light sources, including fluorescent light (FL), light emitting diode (LED), and microwave electrodeless light (MEL), for 8 weeks. Growth characteristics were the best in plants treated with MEL. DPPH scavenging activity of the shoot was more pronounced with the FL treatments, while the roots were more active in plants grown under single wavelength lights (i.e., blue and red LEDs). Among the different light source treatments, the blue LED resulted in a higher total phenolic content in the plants. Furthermore, growing plants growth under the red LED enhanced their total flavonoid content. Notably, the antimicrobial properties of plants varied significantly between light source treatments in this study. Except for E. coli, all the tested microorganisms were susceptible to the plant extracts. Conclusions: The type of light source may be an important parameter for the enhancement of plant growth and functional compounds in S. miltiorrhiza.

  • Background: The photosynthetic efficiency cool-season, semi-shade ginseng is normal at low morning temperatures, but drops at high afternoon temperatures. Therefore, optimal plant performance would be ensured if it were possible to control daily light transmission rates (LTR). Methods and Results: Plants were grown in a controlled light environment that replicated 11 AM conditions and comparatively analyzed against plant grown under normal conditions. Growth in the controlled light environment resulted in a 2.81 fold increase in photosynthetic efficiency with no change in chlorophyll content, although LTR were high due to low morning temperatures. Increased aerial plant growth was observed in the ginseng plants adapted to the controlled light environment, which in turn influenced root weight. An 81% increase in fresh root weight (33.3 g per plant on average) was observed in 4-year-old ginseng plants grown in controlled light environment compared to the plants grown following conventional practices (18.4 g per plant on average). With regard to the inorganic composition of leaves of 4-year-old ginseng plants grown in controlled light environment, an increased in Fe content was observed, while Mn and Zn content decreased, and total ginsenoside content of roots increased 2.37 fold. Conclusions: Growth of ginseng under a favorable light environment, such as the condition which exist naturally at 11 AM and are suitable for the plant's photosynthetic activity creates the possibility of large scale production, excellent-quality ginseng.

  • In general, Cerenkov light is produced by a charged particle that passes through a medium with a velocity greater than that of visible light. Although the wavelength of Cerenkov light is very broad, the peak is in the almost visible range from 400 to 480 nm. Therefore, it always causes a problem to detect a real light signal that is generated in the scintillator on the fiber-optic sensor tip for dose measurements of high-energy electron beam. The objectives of this study are to measure, characterize and remove Cerenkov light generated in a fiber-optic radiation sensor tip to detect a real light signal from the scintillator. In this study, the intensity of Cerenkov light is measured and characterized as a function of incident angle of electron beam from a LINAC, and as a function of the energy of electron beam. As a measuring device, a photodiode-amplifier system is used, and a subtraction method using a background optical fiber is investigated to remove Cerenkov light.

  • Recent modern architecture shows a lot of cases that introduce natural light in indoor space, arousing diverse emotions within a minimal space by means of changes in the light. There are various causes for the background of these streams of times, and it may be said that pursuing the relationship between natural phenomena and space, using changes in light, is an important factor among them. This is closely linked to the raise of phenomenological architecture. In the case of Japan, there are many cases where the architectural language connected to the traditional architecture has been restructured to fit to modern architectural technique. The modern reinterpretation and development of the Japanese traditional effect of light and its meaning can be seen in cases of Kuma Kengo and Tadao Anndo. Of the modern architects that have used the appearance of spatial concept of light in Japanese architectural space, Kengo Kuma shows his attempt at finding identity in his designs through the acceptance and modern reinterpretation of orientalism of nature, along with the traditional and regional interpretation through materials and ways construction. It is his use oh light input used in traditional Japanese settings that have differentiated his work. On this, the present thesis intends to analyze and synthesize what impressions Kengo Kuma's unique methods of light production create in the formation of users' spatial perception, how the unique encounter of light and materials seems to perceivers, and the characteristics of his light production and expression that harmonize space, human, and nature in the visual and perceptual experience of space;

  • In the 2D local dimmable LED backlight system, each LED segment can be controlled separately. This can enhance the contrast ratio and reduce overall power consumption of LCDs. However, an artifact such as 'halo mura' can be observed around the bright object in the dark background. This is caused by the light leakage from the bright area into the dark one. Therefore, the 'halo mura' can be more easily observed in the oblique viewing direction. Thus, in this study, the perceivable degree of the halo mura is evaluated according to the level of the off-axis light leakage of LCDs. It is found that an acceptable degree of halo mura can be obtained in 2.0 cd/$m^2$ of the diagonal light leakage. In addition, the halo mura is unperceivable under 0.7 cd/$m^2$ of the diagonal light leakage which can be achieved with optimally compensated polarizers.
