  • Visual effects are important cues for providing occupants with virtual reality in a vehicle simulator which imitates real driving. The viewpoint of an occupant is sensitively dependent upon the occupant's posture, therefore, the total human body motion must be considered in a graphic simulator. A real-time simulation is required for the dynamic analysis of complex human body motion. This study attempts to apply a neural network to the motion analysis in various driving situations. A full car of medium-sized vehicles was selected and modeled, and then analyzed using ADAMS in such driving conditions as bump-pass and lane-change for acquiring the accelerations of chassis of the vehicle model. A hybrid III 50%ile adult male dummy model was selected and modeled in an ellipsoid model. Multibody system analysis software, MADYMO, was used in the motion analysis of an occupant model in the seated position under the acceleration field of the vehicle model. Acceleration data of the head were collected as inputs to the viewpoint movement. Based on these data, a back-propagation neural network was composed to perform the real-time analysis of occupant motions under specified driving conditions and validated output of the composed neural network with MADYMO result in arbitrary driving scenario.

  • This paper proposes a method for human identification using teeth contours extracted from dental images that are captured from the frontal views of subjects each of who opens his or her mouth slightly. Each dental image has a black-colored region containing the subject's teeth contours which are usually different from subject to subject. This means that this black-colored region has bio-mimetic information useful for human identification. The basic idea of the method is to extract the upper and lower teeth contours from the dental image of each subject and to encode their geometric patterns using a back-propagation neural network model. After acquiring 400 teeth images form 10 university students, we used 300 images for the training data of the neural network model and 100 images for its verification. Experimental results have shown that the proposed neural network-based method can be used as an alternative solution for identification among a small group of humans with a low cost and simple setup.

  • The temperature distributions of concrete structures strongly depend on the value of thermal conductivity of concrete. However, the thermal conductivity of concrete varies according to the composition of the constituents and the temperature and moisture conditions of concrete, which cause difficulty in accurately predicting the thermal conductivity value in concrete. For this reason, in this study, back-propagation neural network models on the basis of experimental values carried out by previous researchers have been utilized to effectively account for the influence of these variables. The neural networks were trained by 124 data sets with eleven parameters: nine concrete composition parameters (the ratio of water-cement, the percentage of fine and coarse aggregate, and the unit weight of water, cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, fly ash and silica fume) and two concrete state parameters (the temperature and water content of concrete). Finally, the trained neural network models were evaluated by applying to other 28 measured values not included in the training of the neural networks. The result indicated that the proposed method using a back-propagation neural algorithm was effective at predicting the thermal conductivity of concrete.

  • An artificial neural network is applied to the prediction of compressive strength, slump value of concrete. Standard mixed tables arc trained and estimated, and the results are compared with those of experiments. To consider the varieties of material properties, the standard mixed tables of two companies of Ready Mixed Concrete are used. And they are trained with the neural network. In this paper, standard back propagation network is used. For the arrangement on the approval of prediction of compressive strength and slump value, the standard compressive strength of 210, $240kgf/cm^2$ and target slump value of 12, 15cm are used because the amount of production of that range arc the most at ordinary companies. In results, in the prediction of compressive strength and slump value, the predicted values are converged well to those of standard mixed tables at the target error of 0.10, 0.05, 0.001 regardless of two companies.

  • Since introduced by Vining and Myers in 1990, the concept of dual response approach based on response surface methodology has widely been investigated and adopted for the purpose of robust design. Separately estimating mean and variance responses, dual response approach may take advantages of optimization modeling for finding optimum settings of input factors. Explicitly assuming functional relationship between responses and input factors, however, it may not work well enough especially when the behavior of responses are poorly represented. A sufficient number of experimentations are required to improve the precision of estimations. This study proposes an alternative to dual response approach in which additional experiments are not required. An artificial neural network has been applied to model relationships between responses and input factors. Mean and variance responses correspond to output nodes while input factors are used for input nodes. Training, validating, and testing a neural network with empirical process data, an artificial data based on the neural network may be generated and used to estimate response functions without performing real experimentations. A drug formulation example from pharmaceutical industry has been investigated to demonstrate the procedures and applicability of the proposed approach.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze limestone deposits potential using an artificial neural network and a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment to identify areas that have not been subjected to the same degree of exploration. For this, a variety of spatial geological data were compiled, evaluated and integrated to produce a map of potential deposits in the Gangreung area, Korea. A spatial database considering deposit, topographic, geologic, geophysical and geochemical data was constructed for the study area using a GIS. The factors relating to 44 limestone deposits were the geological data, geochemical data and geophysical data. These factors were used with an artificial neural network to analyze mineral potential. Each factor’s weight was determined by the back-propagation training method. Training area was applied to analyze and verify the effect of training. Then the mineral deposit potential indices were calculated using the trained back-propagation weights, and potential map was constructed from GIS data. The mineral potential map was then verified by comparison with the known mineral deposit areas. The verification result gave accuracy of 87.31% for training area.

  • In this paper, we improve an image classifier algorithm based on neural network learning. It consists of two steps. The first is input pattern generation and the second, the global neural network implementation using an improved back-propagation algorithm. The feature vector for pattern recognition consists of the codebook data obtained from self-organization feature map learning. It decreases the input neuron number as well as the computational cost. The global neural network algorithm which is used in classifier inserts a control part and an address memory part to the back-propagation algorithm to control weights and unit-offsets. The simulation results show that it does not fall into the local minima and can implement easily the large-scale neural network. And it decreases largely the learning time.

  • An intelligent performance diagnostic computer program of a gas turbine using the NN(Neural Network) was developed. Recently on-condition performance monitoring of major gas path components using the GPA(Gas Path Analysis) method has been performed in analyzing of engine faults. However because the types and severities of engine faults are various and complex, it is not easy that all fault conditions of the engine would be monitored only by the GPA approach. Therefore in order to solve this problem, application of using the NNs for learning and diagnosis would be required. Among then, a BPN (Back Propagation Neural Network) with one hidden layer, which can use an updating learning rate, was proposed for diagnostics of PT6A-62 turboprop engine in this work.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of neural-network based autopilot control system. The back-propagation neural network introduced in the previous paper by authors is applied to the autopilot control system. As a result, two neural-network controllers are developed, which are the model reference adaptive neural controller and the instantaneous optimal neural controller. The model reference adaptive neural controller is the control technique that the heading angle and angular velocity are controlled by the rudder angle to follow the output of the reference model. The instantaneous optimal neural controller optimizes the transition from one state to the next state. These control techniques are applied to a simple ship maneuvering model and their effectiveness is proved by numerical examples.

  • This paper is concerned with the design of two residual control charts for real-time monitoring of the continuous flow processes. Two different control charts are designed under the situation that observations are correlated each other. Kalman-Filter based model estimation is employed when the process model is known. A black-box approach, based on Back-Propagation Neural Network, is also applied for the design of control chart when there is no prior information of process model. Performance of the designed control charts and traditional control charts is evaluated. Average run length(ARL) is adopted as a criterion for comparison. Experimental results show that the designed control chart using the Neural Network's modeling has shorter ARL than that of the other control charts when process mean is shifted. This means that the designed control chart detects the out-of-control state of the process faster than the others. The designed control chart using the Kalman-Filter based model estimation also has better performance than traditional control chart when process is out-of-control state.
