  • The torque characteristics of a surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM) are analyzed in this study. The harmonics of the back electromotive force (EMF) and cogging torque are analyzed by the finite element method to study their effects on the torque ripple. Although low cogging torque can be achieved by varying geometric parameters such as the permanent magnet (PM) offset and notch depth on the stator teeth, the torque ripple is increased in some cases. The analysis results show that the ripple of the generated torque is determined by not only the amplitudes but also the phases of harmonics for the back EMF and cogging torque.

  • Using back electro-motive force(EMF) signals of a brushless DC motor, the sensorless micro-processor controlled drive system was developed. In this new commutation method, the manual pulses are used for relatively short accelerating phase and then the exact commutational positions are detected based upon the back emf signals. The hardware and software implementations with the experiment to compare the performance of the developed system with the, conventional system using hall effect sensors are included. By reducing the number of the required sensors in the artificial heart control system, the total reliability will be incresed.

  • The analytical expressions for magnetic field distributions considering slotting effects, cogging torque and back-emf considering skew effects are established. On the basis of magnetic field solutions, electrical parameters such as back-emf constant and winding inductance are obtained. The predicted results are validated extensively by non-linear finite element (FE) analyses. In particular, test results such as back-emf, cogging torque, inductance and resistance measurements are given to confirm the analyses. Finally, generating performances are investigated by applying estimated parameters to equivalent circuit (EC) of the permanent magnet generator (PMG) and validated extensively by FE calculations and measurements.

On the basis of a magnetic vector potential and Maxwell's equations, governing equations are obtained, and magnetic modeling is predicting characteristic analysis by using the Fourier series expansion. And then, we obtained magnetic field solutions and calculated resistance, back-EMF constant. The analytical results used by 2-D cylindrical coordinate system. The analytical method used in this paper is confirmed by comparing with finite element analysis results.

  • Electric machines for office automation device such as printer and scanner have been required the low noise and vibration performance. Many researches about the low noise and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor have been also progressed. The noise and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor can be classified by aerodynamic, structural and electromagnetic. Electromagnetic noise and vibration can be occurred by high cogging torque and nonsinusoidal back EMF. To improve the cogging torque and back EMF characteristic, we apply unequal air-gap. To analyse characteristic of a polygon mirror scanner motor, two dimensional finite element method is used. To minimize the cogging torque of a polygon mirror motor, Kriging based on latin hypercube sampling (LHS) is utilized. As a result, the cogging torque and torque ripple improved while maintaining the back EMF and average torque.

  • In this paper, a novel motor control method is proposed to improve the performance of sensorless drive of BLDC motors. The unknown input (back-EMF) is modelled as the additional state of system in this paper. Taking into account the disturbance adopted by the back-EMF, the observer can be obtained by the augmented system equation. An algorithm to detect the back-EMF of the BLDC motor using the state observer is constructed. As a result, the novel sensorless drive of BLDC motors that can strictly estimate rotor position and speed is proposed.

  • Dead time is typically incorporated in voltage source inverter systems to prevent short circuit cases. However, dead time causes an error between the output voltage and reference voltage. Hence, voltage equation-based algorithms, such as motor parameter estimation and back electromotive force (EMF)-based sensorless algorithms, are prone to estimation errors. Several dead-time compensation methods have been developed to reduce output voltage errors. However, voltage errors are still common in zero current crossing areas, and an effect of the error is much worse in a low speed region. Therefore, employing voltage equation-based algorithms in low speed regions is difficult. This study analyzes the conventional dead-time compensation method and output voltage errors in low speed operation areas. A current shaping method that can reduce output voltage errors is also proposed. Experimental results prove that the proposed method reduces voltage errors and improves the accuracy of the parameter estimation method and the performance of the back EMF-based sensorless algorithm.

  • An inverter output power control based power factor correction (PFC) strategy is being extensively used for permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives in appliances because such a strategy can considerably reduce the cost and size of the inverter. In this strategy, PFC circuits are removed and large electrolytic DC-link capacitors are replaced with small film capacitors. In this application, the PMSM d-q axes currents are controlled to produce ripples, the frequency of which is twice that of the AC main voltage, to obtain a high power factor at the AC mains. This process indicates that the PMSM operates under periodic magnetic saturation conditions. This paper proposes a back electromotive-force (back-EMF) estimator for the high-speed sensorless control of PMSM operating under periodic magnetic saturation conditions. The transfer function of the back-EMF estimator is analyzed to examine the effect of the periodic magnetic saturation on the accuracy of the estimated rotor position. A simple compensation method for the estimated position errors caused by the periodic magnetic saturation is also proposed in this paper. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally verified with the use of a PMSM drive for a vacuum cleaner centrifugal fan, wherein the maximum operating speed reaches 30,000 rpm.

  • The sensorless control of blushless DC motor(BLDCM) is based on the $120^{\circ}$ control in which the back electromotive force(Back EMF) for estimating the position of the rotor can be detected. However, the $120^{\circ}$ control has a disadvantage that the torque constant is small as compared with $180^{\circ}$ control which can not detect the back EMF. The $150^{\circ}$ control which complements these problems makes it possible to detect the back EMF and improve the torque constant by 12.5% compared to the $120^{\circ}$ control. Therefore, this paper compares the output characteristics of BLDCM through finite element method analysis (FEA) by the conventional and proposed control methods of BLDCM for water circulation system and proposes design for downsizing and weight reduction of BLDCM according to secured torque constant. The validity of the proposed control and design proposal is proved through simulation and experimental results by comparing the output characteristics of $120^{\circ}$ control and $150^{\circ}$ control.

  • A back-electromotive force (back-EMF) estimator for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) uses the three-phase voltage references of a current controller to estimate rotor position. However, owing to voltage drops caused by the nonlinear characteristics of switches and passive components, the actual voltage in the motor and the three-phase voltage reference may not match. This study proposes a sensorless control method using a sine-wave output filter applied between the motor drive system and PMSM. The precise voltage in the motor can be measured with the sine-wave output filter and applied to the input of the estimator. Moreover, given that the voltage in the motor can be measured precisely at extremely low speeds, the stable operation range of the back-EMF estimator can be secured. Experimental results show that the proposed sensorless control method has stable operation at extremely low speeds compared with conventional sensorless control.
