  • Effect of lauric acid and whir derivatives on the growth of Bacillus subtilis var niger was studied. Lauric acid showed the strongest inhibition among the fatty acids tested, Lysis rate of lauric acid proved to be greatly sensitibility against logarithmic phase cells but was not so influenced by cell concentration. On the other hand, lauric acid was inhibited lysis activity when the pH shift from 7.0 to 5.5

  • Airborne microorganisms, which are currently termed bioaerosols, have received attention owing to the harmful effects they have on human health. As the concern over airborne microorganisms grows, there also grows an urgent need to study and develop efficient methods for controlling them. In this study, thermal energy using a thermal tube was tested as a control method, mainly against airborne E. coli. For a comparison, B. subtilis var. niger spores were utilized in the experimentation. It was found that the widely known inactivation conditions for microorganisms were not adequate against airborne microorganisms. The experimental results demonstrated the need for extensive studies that should investigate adequate and economic conditions to control against airborne bacteria. In this study, thermal energy exposed by the thermal tube demonstrated an inactivation performance for controlling E. coli bioaerosols.

  • Thermal resistance of dried bacterial spores against dry heat was determined. Spare suspensions of Bacillus subtilis var. niger ATCC 9372, Bacillus stearothermophilus Oxoid Code BR 23 and Clostridium sporogenes ATCC 19404 were located on aluminium strips, dried in electric oven under vacuum at room temperature for 10 minutes. The aluminium strips were laid in the middle of gas flow (hot air and superheated steam) with the velocity of 6 m/sec and heated at $120^{\circ}C$ for 180 seconds. The calculated D-values showed that there were no remarkable differences in the heat resistance of bacterial spares between $R.H.\leqq0.012$ and R. H.=0.51. Furthermore the thermal resistance of B. subtilis spores to dry heat was greater than that of B. stearothermophilus.

  • Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense were extracted with methanol and then fractionated with nhexane, EtOAc and BuOH to get active fractions. And their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities in each fraction were determined. Ethyl acetate and butanol fraction of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense showed strong antioxidant activities, but hexane fraction did not show any activities. But in the antimicrobial test, Ethyl acetate fraction showed strong antimicrobial activities except to Aspergillus awamori, Asperigillus niger. Especially, Ethyl acetate fraction showed the strongest activities against Bacillus subtilis. And aqueous fraction showed the strongest activities against Cladosporium herbarum, Hypocrea nigricans. This study was performed to determine the antimutagenic and cytotoxic effect of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense methanol extract on Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100 and cancer cell lines using Ames test and cytotoxicity assay, respectively. Cancer cell lines include human lung carcinoma(A549), human breast adenocarcinoma(MCF-7) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (Hep3B). Futher fractionations with hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol and water from methanol extract of Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense were performed to obtain effective fraction, methanol extract showed 60.14% inhibition effect on the mutagenesis induced by MNNG against TA100, while 77% and 72.5% inhibition was observed on the mutagenesis induced by 4NQO against TA98 and TA100, respectively. and methanol extract showed 82.25% and 73.7% inhibitory effect on the mutagenesis induced by Trp-P-1 against TA98 and TA100, respectively. methanol extract showed the strongest effect against A549, MCF-7 and Hep3B at the same concentration compared to those of other fration.
