  • Driven by the development of information technologies, information system (IS) use has been common even in military organizations. In particular, field artillery is currently using the Battalion Tactical Commanding System-A1 (BTCS-A1) to improve fire support. The use of BTCS-A1 makes fire-commanding processes simple and autonomous, which leads to shorten time to support fire. Although BTCS-A1 has been considered as a helpful system, there still exists some dispute regarding its effectiveness and impact on task performance. By conceptualizing BTCS-A1 use as appropriation, this study investigates how BTCS-A1 appropriation promotes task performance. We also hypothesize that IS quality, organizational pressure (institutional pressure and supervisor influence), and team climate (team learning climate and team empowerment climate) increase the appropriation. Survey results show that organizational pressure and team climate promote BTCS-A1 appropriation, which improves users' task performance. However, effect of IS quality is not significant. Theoretical and practical implications are presented.

  • Interoperability is the key issue in NCW. However, old-fashioned weapon systems have low level interoperability. The representative example is BTCS. Therefore, we apply KVMF R1 to BTCS in order to improve interoperability and testify the effectiveness of how to apply without any changes in existing software. In this paper, we have proposed a message and software architecture design method for applying KVMF to developed weapon system. Finally, it is confirmed that the proposed method is superior to apply KVMF to existing weapon system in a point of verifying how to highly efficiently apply KVMF on existing weapon system.

  • In many solute transport studies, either flux or resident concentration has been used. Choice of the concentration mode was dependent on the monitoring device in solute displacement experiments. It would be questionable, however. to accept the equivalency in the solute transport parameters between flux and resident concentrations in structured soils exhibiting preferential movement of solute. In this study, we investigate how they differ in the monitored breakthrough curves (BTCs) and transport parameters for a given boundary and flow condition by performing solute displacement experiments on a number of undisturbed soil columns. Both flux and resident concentrations have been simultaneously obtained by monitoring the effluent and resistance of the Horizontally-positioned TDR probes. The study reveals that soil columns having relatively high flux densities exhibited great differences in the degree of peak concentration and travel time of peak between flux and resident concentrations. The peak concentration in flux mode was several times higher than that in resident one. This was mainly due to the bypassing of solute through soil macropores.

  • Understanding the behavior of gas phase VOCs (volatile organic compounds) in unsaturated soils is of a great environmental importance for public health concerns. Moment analysis for the breakthrough curves (BTCs) during transport of chemicals in porous media was known to be a useful tool to evaluate the velocity, spreadness, and the skewness of the plume of the chemicals. In this study, the temporal moments of the BTCs of a group of VOCs were analyzed for the gaseous transport in an unsaturated soil. BTCs were measured using lab-scale column experiments for four different VOCs at the water saturation range of 0.04-0.46, and for eleven VOCs at a water saturation of 0.21. The central second and third moments of the VOCs were compared with the water saturation and the first moment. It was found that both central second and third moments increased with the first moment. The central third moment was, however, found to be more sensitive to the first moment.

  • Column tests using KCl and Benzene as tracers were conducted for four different cases: 1) no hydrogen peroxide and no microorganism; 2) hydrogen peroxide only; 3) microorganism only; 4) hydrogen and microorganism to investigate the sorption and degradation characteristics of Benzene. The observed BTCs of KCl and Benzene in all cases showed that the arrival times of the peaks of both tracers coincided well but the peak concentration of Benzene was much lower than that of KCl. This result reveals that a predominant process affecting the transport of Benzene in a sandy soil is an irreversible sorption and/or degradation rather than retardation. Decay of Benzene through sorption and degradation increased with the addition of hydrogen peroxide and/or microorganism. Dissolved oxygen decreased with the increase of Benzene in all cases indicating that Benzene was degraded by dissolved oxygen. For BTCs with the addition of microorganisms (case 3 and case 4), microorganism showed much lower concentrations compared to the initial levels and an increasing tendency with time although concentrations of Benzene returned to zero, indicating a possible retardation of microorganism due to reversible and irreversible sorption to the particle surfaces.

  • Background: Because of the relative rarity of biliary tract cancers (BTCs), defining long term survival results is difficult. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the survival of a series of cases in Turkey. Materials and Methods: A totally of 47 patients with billiary tract cancer from Mersin Goverment Hospital, Acibadem Kayseri Hospital and Kayseri Training and Research Hospital were analyzed retrospectively using hospital records between 2006-2012. Results: The median overall survival was $19.3{\pm}3.9$ months for all patients. The median disease free and overall survivals were $24.3{\pm}5.3$ and $44.1{\pm}12.9$ months in patients in which radical surgery was performed, but in those with with inoperable disease they were only $5.3{\pm}1.5$ and $10.7{\pm}3.2$ months, respectively. Conclusions: BTCs have a poor prognosis. Surgery with a microscopic negative margin is still the only curative treatment.

  • At an initial battle stage, counter-fire capability have critical impact on defeating the enemy in the future warfare. In this paper, we proposed an efficient method of counter-fire execution. To do that, hit-probability for each artillery type was evaluated using CEP and applied to calculate new target reference table of a counter-fire operation. In order to compare new result to the one obtained by using previous reference table from BTCS, we did simulation using MANA model. Simulation outputs show that new method is superior to previous method of counter-fire operation in various scenarios depending upon each method and usage of UAV.

  • A controlled column study using elution development and miscible displacement was conducted to assess heavy metal transport characteristics in sludge-untreated soil ("Control"), soil treated with an equivalent of sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ ("Soil-Sludge mixtures"), and sewage sludge ("Sludge"). The elution curves (ECs) and the breakthrough curves (BTCs) for Cd, Cu and Zn in sludge 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ treated soils are not different from the sludge-untreated soil, The ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of 10 mg of each Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to those of Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which had no Cd, Cu and Zn added, but were very different with the ECs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column which received a pulse of Cd, Cu and Zn containing 50 mg of each metal. On the other hand, the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil columns that were eluted with 500 and $1000mg\;L^{-1}$ of mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn were similar to each other, but were distinctly different with the BTCs for Cd, Cu and Zn in soil column that was eluted with $100mg\;L^{-1}$ mixed solution of Cd, Cu and Zn. Sewage sludge applied at rates of 50 and 100 dry ton $ha^{-1}$ did not affect the transport characteristics of this calcareous soil. The apparent mobility for this sludge treated soil and sludge is: Cd >Zn>Cu. The transport characteristics of Cd and Zn are similar to each other, but are different from those of Cu.

  • This paper performs two-dimensional numerical simulation of surface water-groundwater coupled flow and solute transport to investigate the effect of the hyporheic exchange at the sediment-water interface (SWI) on surface solute transport. For the impermeable bed case in the absence of hyporheic flow, the trapping effect of flow recirculation associated with the ripple bed controls the shape of breakthrough curves (BTCs). However, the permeable bed case with hyporheic flow stimulates the extended tailing of the BTCs more significantly due to the elevated concentration of the BTC tailing resulting from slow hyporheic velocity. Also, the increased bottom pressure at the SWI with an increase in surface velocity shortens the BTC tailing because of increasing hyporheic velocity. These results infer that hyporhiec flow is critically important in predicting solute residence times in surface water.
