Relationship Between Body Mass Index and Early Menarche of Adolescent Girls in Seoul

  • Objectives: The object of this study was to determine the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and early menarche in adolescent girls in Seoul. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted with 144 middle school students in Seoul who provided informed consent. We measured their body composition, and used the questionnaire survey method for data collection from November to December 2008. Past elemental body composition data were collected from elementary school health records of first year of middle school. Results: The early menarcheal group was taller and heavier than the late menarcheal group (p<0.05 from 8-12 years old). The body fat percentage (%), BMI were higher in the early menarcheal girls than the late-menarcheal girls (p<0.05, age at 13). In the result of multiple logistic regression, the BMI at the age of 8 and 9 was associated with early menarche after adjusting for birth weight, breast feeding and age at menarche of the mother (BMI at the age of 8: p for trend=0.01, BMI at the age of 9: p for trend=0.04). An increase in BMI from 7 to 8 year was associated with early menarche after adjusting for birth weight, breast feeding, age at menarche of the mother (p for trend=0.048). Conclusions: The BMI at the age of 8 and 9 was associated with the early menarche of girls and increase in BMI from 7 to 8 year was associated with the early menarche of girls. These results suggest that BMI and increase in BMI before menarche cause early menarche. Although this study does not represent all Korean adolescent girls, it is one of the few studies that have investigated the temporal relationship between BMI and early menarche.

Body Adiposity Index and Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors in Korean Adults: A Comparison with Body Mass Index and Other Parameters

  • A new body adiposity index (BAI) has been proposed that is expected to replace body mass index (BMI). We evaluated the correlations between metabolic syndrome risk factors and BAI, BMI, and other adiposity indices, such as waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), by sex in the Korean population. We also evaluated whether BAI would be useful to diagnose metabolic syndrome. A total of 20,961 Korean adults who underwent health examinations were included in this study. The metabolic syndrome diagnostic criteria used in this study were those set by the American Heart Association/National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (AHA/NHLBI). In men (12,719), BMI and WHtR were more strongly correlated to metabolic syndrome risk than BAI, and in women (8,242), WHtR showed the strongest association with metabolic syndrome risk. BAI (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.678) presented lower discriminatory capacity than that of BMI (AUC = 0.836) for diagnosing metabolic syndrome. Moreover, BAI underestimated fat levels in men and women when considering the ability to discriminate overweight and obese individuals. In conclusion, WHtR and BMI in men, and WHtR in women may be better candidates than BAI to evaluate metabolic risk factors in Korean adults.

Influences of Body Mass Index, Mindfulness and Self-esteem on the Body Image among University Students (여대생의 체질량지수, 마음챙김 및 자아존중감이 신체이미지에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of body mass index (BMI), mindfulness and self-esteem on reported body image among university students. Methods: Data were collected through questionnaires from 266 students and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficients and Stepwise multiple regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 19.0 program. Results: As defined by body mass index, the sample was divided into an underweight group was 88.7%, a normal weight group was 10.5%, and an overweight group was 0.8%. The levels of body image depended on family income, personality, and BMI. The body image was significantly correlated with BMI, mindfulness, and self-esteem. The influential factors affecting body image were self-esteem, BMI, family income and personality, which explained about 34.6% of the variance. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that nursing intervention are needed to improve body image, and that such variables should be carefully considered in intervention for university students.

Relationship Between the Body Mass Index and Abnormal Pap Smears

  • This cross-sectional analytic study aimed to investigate any relationship between the body mass index (BMI) and an abnormal Pap smear. The subjects were 7,720 women aged 30-69 years who lived in Khon Kaen Province, Thailand, and had been recruited as participants in the Khon Kaen Cohort Study during 1990-2001. All had received Pap smear screening for cervical cancer. The data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine the relationship between body mass index and an abnormal Pap smear. The mean BMI was $24.53kg/m^2$ (SD=3.98), and 2.14% had abnormal Pap smears. Compared with the reference group of women with a BMI ${\leq}22.9kg/m^2$, those with a body mass index of $23.0-24.9kg/m^2$ had a reduced risk of an abnormal smear (ORadj=0.92, 95%CI: 0.57-1.47), but women with a BMI $25.0-29.9kg/m^2$ were found to have an approximately 1.24 times higher risk ($OR_{adj}=1.24$, 95%CI: 0.86-1.80), and those with a BMI ${\geq}30.0kg/m^2$ had an approximately 1.63 times higher risk ($OR_{adj}=1.63$, 95%CI: 0.98-2.69). The results indicated that the risk of Pap smear abnormalities is increased in women who have a higher than normal body mass index, but this finding was not statistically significant. Nevertheless, public health personnel should encourage women to maintain their BMI in the normal range to reduce the possible future risk of cervical cancer.

The association of blood pressure with body mass index and waist circumference in normal weight and overweight adolescents

  • Purpose: Overweight can be defined by the body mass index (BMI) and is likely associated with an increased cardiovascular disease risk. However, waist circumference (WC), a central adiposity index, may be a better indicator of cardiovascular disease risk. Studies comparing the effects of BMI and WC on cardiovascular risk factors, such as high blood pressure (BP), are rare in adolescents. Methods: We analyzed the correlations of BMI and WC with BP in 3,363 Korean adolescents (aged 10-19 years), using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (2009-2011). Results: Systolic BP (SBP) in both sexes and diastolic BP (DBP) in boys were higher in the high BMI (>85th percentile) and high WC (>90th percentile) groups. High BMI and high WC were positively correlated with high SBP (>90th percentile) in both sexes, and high DBP (>90th percentile), in boys. BMI maintained its positive associations with SBP, DBP, high SBP, and high DBP in the normal weight ($BMI{\leq}85th$ percentile) and overweight (BMI>85th percentile) groups in both boys and girls, as well as in all subjects of both sexes, even after adjustment for WC. However, WC did not correlate with SBP, DBP, high SBP, or high DBP after adjustment for BMI in any group in either sex. Conclusion: In Korean adolescents, BMI correlated better with BP and high BP levels than WC. Further, BMI was positively associated with BP and high BP in the normal weight group as well as in the overweight group.

Relationship Between Osteoporosis and Body Mass Index among the Elderly: A Theoretical Review (노인의 골다공증과 체질량지수의 관계에 관한 이론적 고찰)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to review the literature to explore the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and bone mineral density (BMD) in elderly using an integrative review. Methods: The keywords 'osteoporosis,' 'body mass index,' and 'bone mineral density' were used to search peer-reviewed publications through four databases. Among 1,389 searched articles, eight articles were selected after excluding those that did not meet the inclusion criteria. Results: Seven articles stated that BMI was positively associated with BMD among elderly. In the elderly, the prevalence of osteoporosis was 25-55.7% in women, and 11-13% in men. Conclusion: This study found that high BMI may be helpful to increase BMD among elderly although the mechanism was not clear. It is necessary to identify BMD and fractures in elderly according to body composition in future research.

  • In this paper, we propose a technique that can be mapped to the most appropriate type of health patterns, depending on the health status of health promotion measures to establish a body mass index (BMI). When used as a mapping scheme proposed in this paper it is possible to contribute to effective healthcare and health promotion. BMI is widely used as a simple way to assess obesity because body fat increases the status and relevance. Despite normal weight determined by this and because of the social atmosphere has increased prefer the skinny tend to try to excessive weight loss. Since health can affect the health maintenance and promotion of the rest of your life, depending on whether and how much weight perception and health can be considered as very important. Therefore, this paper identifies the differences in perception and in this respect for the body mass index (BMI). And physical, mental and map the appropriate type of pattern in the relationship between body mass index (BMI) in order to facilitate the social and health conditions. Proposal to give such a mapping technique provides the opportunity to increase the efficiency of health care and health promotion.

Correlation study between Obesity and Cardiovascular Risk Factors (비만과 심혈관 질환 위험인자와의 상관관계 분석 -건강검진 대상자를 중심으로-)

  • Background: Recently obesity has become a social problem in all over the world including Korea. It is known that obesity is closely related with cardiovascular disease. Many studies are carrying out in the relation between several obesity indices, such as body mass index(BMI), waist-circumference(WC), body fat percent and risk factors of cardiovascular disease. Objective: This study was done in order to investigate correlation of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors. Method: We gathered totally 138 subjects who have taken health screening test in university hospital. With the exception of 40 abnormal cases on current illness and laboratory study, 98 healthy cases were analysed. We divided the groups as normal, overweight, obese group according to body mass index $(22.9kg/m^2\;and\;below\;/\;23{\sim}24.9kg/m^2\;/\;25kg/m^2\;and\;above)$and investigated the relationship between obesity based on body mass index(BMI) and cardiovascular risk factors. And investigated the relationship between each cardiovascular risk factor and body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body fat percent. Results: With the exception of blood pressure, other lab data such as total cholesterol, triglycerid, glucose were significantly different between the three groups divided by body mass index$(22.9kg/m^2\;and\;below\;/\;23{\sim}24.9kg/m^2\;/\;25kg/m^2\;and\;above)$. And Correlation coefficient of cardiovascular risk factors with body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body fat precent were acquired. Conclusion: We have concluded that the body mass index and waist-hip ratio body fat precent were predictive factors cardiovascular disease.

The Study on Relationships between Body Mass Index and the Measurement Results Using Sensitiv ImagoTM in Pediatric Patients (Sensitiv ImagoTM 측정 환아의 BMI에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the Sensitiv $Imago^{TM}$ in pediatric patient. Methods The study was conducted with 79 children, who were 5 to 18 years old. They were tested using Sensitiv $Imago^{TM}$. Their height, weight were measured for body mass index to find out the relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and the result of Sensitiv $Imago^{TM}$ (SI). Results 1. The percentages of the normal weight group (74.68%), overweight group (6.33%), and underweight group (18.99%) were shown respectively. 2. No one was belong to Acute Processes in either groups. 3. In normal weight group, there were Active Processes (16.9%), Unstable Remission (69.5%), Inactive Processes (13.6%), Inactive Process or Development Risk (0.0%). In overweight group, there were Active Processes (20.0%), Unstable Remission (40.0%), Inactive Processes (40.0%), Inactive Process or Development Risk (0.0%). In underweight group, there were Active Processes (6.7%), Unstable Remission (66.7%), Inactive Processes (20.0%), Inactive Process or Development Risk (6.7%). Conclusions There were no significant relationship between Body Mass Index (BMI) and Sensitiv $Imago^{TM}$ in pediatric patient. Considering that the number of subjects involved in this study was not enough to confirm any results, further studies are necessary to confirm this relationship.

The Effects of Sobieum on Decrease of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Obesity Index of Obese Children (소비음(消肥飮)이 비만아의 체질량지수와 비만도 감소에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Sobieum on decrease of BMI and obesity index of obese children. Methods 66 children (33 boys, 33 girls) were involved in this study. We measured height and weight for each time their visit, and calculated BMI and obesity index. Results After medication, BMI level and obesity index were significantly reduced (p<0.001). Conclusions We speculate that Sobieum is effective in the treatment of childhood obesity, and further controlled studies are needed with clinical cases of hematological evaluation.
