Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between oral health status and body mass index (BMI) in adults over 65 years old. Methods: The study subjects were 4,550 adults over 65 years old from the 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey(KNHANES V) in 2010-2012. Mastication-related oral health status included the number of remaining teeth, and mean number of decayed, missing, and filled permanent teeth(DMFT). Body mass index(BMI, $kg/m^2$) was categorized as underweight(<18.5), normal weight (18.5-22.9), overweight(23.0-24.9), and obese(${\geq}25.0$). Multinomial logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association of BMI categories with the number of remaining teeth and DMFT. Results: The mean number of DMFT was highest($13.0{\pm}0.7$) in the underweight group and lowest($8.8{\pm}0.3$) in the obese group. Those having less favorable masticatory ability, and fewer number of remaining teeth and no prosthesis, tended to be underweight. Those having a higher number of remaining teeth and prosthetic teeth tended to be overweight or obese. In the multinomial logistic regression analysis, compared with those having 20 or more remaining teeth, including prosthetic teeth, those having less than 20 remaining teeth and no prosthesis had 4.48 times higher odds ratio of being underweight. DMFT was positively associated with underweight, while negatively associated with overweight or obesity. Conclusions: The masticatory ability and dental caries prevention maintained the healthy body weight in adults of old age.
Objective: A number of candidate genes have been in implicated in the pathogenesis of obesity in humans. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha $(TNF-{\alpha})$ is expressed primarily in adipocytes, and elevated levels of this cytokine have been linked to obesity and insulin resistance. Recently, the A allele of a polymorphism at position 308 in the promoter region of $TNF-{\alpha}$ (G-308A) has been shown to increase transcription of the gene in adipocytes. Therefore, we designed this study to test whether obese and non-obese subjects differ in $TNF-{\alpha}$ genotype distribution, and how the genotypes affect anthropometric parameters, including degrees of body mass index (BMI). Methods : The study included 153 obese but otherwise healthy women ($BMI{\geq}kg/m^2$, range 25-54.7, age range 15-40 years) and 82 non-obese healthy women ($BMI, age range 15-40 years). Total fat mass and percent body fat were determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Genomic DNA was extracted and used for Ncol restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) based genotyping of $TNF-{\alpha}$. Results: No differences were observed for allelic and genotype frequencies between the obese ($BMI{\geq}25$) and non-obese women. Also, no association of TNF-(l polymorphism was observed with body mass index (BMI) for genotype in obese women. In addition, age, pertent body fat, BMI, and cholesterol levels did not differ by $TNF-{\alpha}$ genotype. However, waist-tohip ratio (WHR) was significantly lower in subjects with $TNF-{\alpha}$ GA or AA genotype (0.94 0.07 vs. 0.920.03, P<0.005). Conclusion: These results suggest that $TNF-{\alpha}$ promoter polymorphism at position-308 is not a significant factor for BMI, but affects the WHR in obese healthy women from Koreans.
Whether the $FTO$ polymorphisms interact with environmental factors has not yet been evaluated in associations with metabolic syndrome (MS) risk. The present study investigated the association of the $FTO$ rs9939609 genotypes, body mass index (BMI), and lifestyle-related factors including smoking, alcohol drinking, physical activity, and diet with MS incidence. A population-based prospective cohort study comprised 3,504 male and female Koreans aged 40 to 69 years. At the beginning of the study, all individuals were free of MS and known cardiovascular disease. Incident cases of MS were identified by biennial health examinations during a follow-up period from April 17, 2003 to April 15, 2009. Pooled logistic regression analysis was applied to obtain relative odds (RO) of MS with its 95% confidence interval (CI). After controlling for potential MS risk factors, we observed no association between the rs9939609 genotypes and MS incidence. In analysis stratified by BMI, however, carriers with the $FTO$ risk allele whose BMI is $29kg/m^2$ or greater showed an approximately 6-fold higher RO (95% CI: 3.82 to 9.30) compared with non-carriers with BMI less than $25kg/m^2$. In particular, the association between the rs9939609 variants and MS risk was significantly modified by high BMI (P-value for interaction < 0.05). Such significant interaction appeared in associations with central obesity and high blood pressure among the MS components. Because carriers of the $FTO$ risk alleles who had BMI of $29kg/m^2$ or greater are considered a high risk population, we suggest that they may need intensive weight loss regimens to prevent MS development.
Purpose: Although obesity is a well-established risk factor for many cancers, the effect of body mass index (BMI) on oral cancer risk remains controversial. We therefore investigated the effect of BMI on oral cancer risk in a case-control study in Korea. Methods: Overall, 364 patients with oral cancer and 439 community controls were enrolled. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated using logistic regression models, adjusted for age, smoking status and alcohol consumption. Results: We found no overall significant evidence of an association between oral cancer risk and BMI in either gender. However, when the relationship between BMI and oral cancer risk was examined according to female age groups (<50 and ${\geq}$50 years), there was a significant association between oral cancer risk and high BMI in female subjects younger than 50 years of age (OR=3.92, 95% CI 1.03~14.9, $P$ for trend=0.04), but not in older (${\geq}$50 years) female subjects (OR=1.11, 95% CI 0.55~2.24, $P$ for trend=0.76). There was no significant relationship between BMI and oral cancer risk in any of the male age subgroups. Conclusion: Our study provides the first epidemiological evidence supporting an association between obesity and an increased risk of oral cancer.
Diffusion tensor images were obtained to investigate the damage of brain white matter in non-smokers and an adequate drinking group (less than 10 points) selected by scores of the Korean versions of alcohol use disorders identification test questionnaire. Factional anisotropy (FA) values, according to the variables of age and body mass index (BMI), were not statistically significant in all regions of the brain white matter after measurement of factional anisotropy (FA) values by the tract-based spatial statics (TBSS) method. In other words, age and body mass index (BMI) do not significantly affect the microstructural changes of the brain white matter.
Objectives : Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic disease of the bone, and one of the most important public health problems around the world. Obesity rate gradually increases as women grow older. The purpose of the study was to investigate the changes between bond mineral density(BMD) and body mass index(BMI) according to sex and age. Methods : We measured the bone mineral density(BMD) of lumber spine(L2-L4) and femoral neck in 10000 normal adult, using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA; DPX-alpha). and also measured the body mass index(BMI) in 9810 normal adult. then we analysed the changes of BMD and BMI according to sex and age. Results : 1. As getting older, male's T-score of lumbar spine(L2-L4) was slowly decreased. On the other hand, female's T-score of lumbar spine was sharply dropped after 46 years old. 2. As getting older, male's T-score of femoral was slowly decreased. On the other hand, female's T-score of femoral was sharply dropped after 49 years old. 3. Irrespective of age, male's BMI keep up the extent within a definite period of numerical value. As getting older, female's BMI continued its upward trend. Conclusions : Much more attention should be needed for female patient suffering from osteoporosis and obesity than male.
Objectives: This study is designed to report the correlation between Body Mass Index(BMI), Heart Rate Variability(HRV), stess, drinking alcohol, coffee and smoking. Methods: From 1st January 2010 to 31st December 2012, We tested on 458 patients who hospitalized in Cheong Yeon Korean Medicine Hospital for reducing their weights, then we collected the statistical analysis with the result of their HRV and the special survey. Results: This experiment was studied on total 458 patients, 27 were men and 431 were women. The average of the age of men was $28.23{\pm}4.22$ and $24.31{\pm}385$ was women. There were significant differences in BMI, Low frequency(LF), High frequency(HF), stress score, frequency of drinking alcohol, smoking and drinking coffee followed by their ages. When we looked at the correlation between obesity with smoking and drinking coffee, we can see that the BMI increased, the frequency of drinking alcohol was decreased, however there were no statistic correlation in smoking and drinking coffee with BMI. Conclusions: With the result of HRV, we can suggest the BMI and stress score are correlated each other but we need further studies about passive stress relief by taking favourite food such as drinking alcohol, smoking, drinking coffee, etc.
Objectives: We aim to observe the relation of body mass index (BMI) and the indicators of oral health. Methods: 400 subjects participated in the study. The BMI values are calculated from the height and weight. For the tongue diagnosis, we used the tongue imaging device to analyze the color, tongue coating, and tooth marks. We measured the concentration of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl mercaptan (CH3SH) to evaluate the halitosis. The dry mouth was evaluated through the measurement of saliva secretion and with the questionnaire asking the frequency of dry mouth. Results: The BMI values were significantly higher in the group with light-white and blue-purple colored tongue, and significantly lower for lightly-coated tongue. However, the correlation of BMI and the amounts of saliva secretion was not significant as well as in the correlation of BMI and the concentration of H2S, CH3SH. In tongue diagnosis, the subjects who had blue-purple colored tongue also had significantly higher H2S and CH3SH, but tendency of lower saliva secretion. Conclusion: We obtain data showing that BMI value and the indicators of oral health including tongue diagnosis have meaningful correlation.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between obesity and periodontal diseases in adults. Methods: The subjects were 6,762 adults over 19 years old selected from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013). The study instruments included periodontal status of periodontal diseases, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC). Periodontal status was evaluated by community periodontal index (CPI). Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The prevalence of periodontal diseases was higher in male, older aged people, undereducated people, current smokers, and those having poor cognition for toothbrushing (p<0.001). The rate of obesity by BMI and WC was higher in male, older aged people and current smokers. The rate of obesity was lower in well-educated people and good practice of toothbrushing (p<0.001). The prevalence of periodontal diseases by BMI showed 0.565 times lower in underweight population, 1.302 times higher in overweight population, and 1.311 times higher in highly obese population than normal population. The prevalence of periodontal diseases by waist circumferences showed 1.404 times higher in obese population than the normal population (p<0.05). Conclusions: It is very important to promote periodontal disease prevention and education for obese population in Korea. The risk of periodontal diseases can be preventable by decrease of BMI and WC.

A questionnaire was administered to 850 middle school students in Jinju city and Hamyang province to asses their body shape preferences. Their mean current BMI(body mass index, Kg/㎡) in males(19.23±2.77) was higher than that in females(18.61±2.59). On the other hand, significant differences in BMI were not found between areas. The perceived desired weights for their current height were about+0.22kg(males) and -4.32kg(females) of their actual weights. In spite of the average weight group, many wished to lose weight because of their tendency to perceive themselves as overweight, especially among rural females. Their ideal body shape as perceived by them were 'normal' in males and 'a bit thin' in females, independent of the areas. As for the 'contentment' regarding their current weight and health, the most satisfied group in males were estimated average weight and slightly overweight group, respectively. While, the most satisfied group in females were estimated slightly underweight and overweight group, respectively. Their extreme slim-body preference might have its root in the lack of proper understanding of what the 'standard' body weight was.
