  • Mineralogy and the exposed surface area are two of the most important factors controlling dissolution and weathering rates of soils. The mixture of inorganic and organic materials of various size distributions and structures that constitute soils makes the calculation of weathering rates difficult. The surface area of soil minerals plays an important role in most of programs for calculating the weathering rates and critical loads. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement is recommended for the measurement of specific surface area. However, BET values measured without organic matter removal are in fact those far all the N2-adsorbed surface areas, including the surfaces covered and aggregated with organisms. Surfaces occupied by organisms are assumed to be more reactive to weathering by organic activities. Therefore, the BET surface area difference before and after organic removal depicts the area occupied by organisms. The present study shows that the BET values after organic matter removal using $H_2$O$_2$ are larger than those without removal by 1.68~4.87 $m^2$/g. This implies that BET measurement without organic removal excludes the reactive area occupied by organisms and that the area occupied by organisms in soils is much larger than expected. It is suggested that specific surface area measurement for calculating weathering rates of mineral soils should be made before and after organic matter removal. The results of a column experiment are presented to demonstrate the potential retarding influence that this organic matter may have on mineral dissolution and weathering.

  • Using water vapor adsorption data foe some typical Korean soils. we calculated the adsorption energy distribution functions and average adsorption energies for these soils using theory of adsorption on hetergeneous surfaces. As a local adsorption models the BET and a new Aranovich equations were applied. The distribution functions were broad, indicating rather high energetic inhomogeneity of the surface.

  • The effect of alkali metal salt on the activity of Co-Mo catalyst which has high resistance to sulfur poisoning for water gas shift reaction(WGSR) was studied. Two groups of catalysts were prepared to investigate the effects of anion and cation in alkali metal salts. For K-doped catalysts made with various potassium salts having different anion, the catalytic activity was explained to depend mainly on the BET surface area. Among the catalysts prepared by various nitrates of alkali metal as precursor, the Li-doped catalyst showed the best activity, and the others did not make significant differences giving relatively low activities. And the change of BET surface area by varying the loading of alkali metal showed a similar trend to that of activity. In this case, the activity was dependent on both BET surface area and the ratio of $Mo^{6+}$ with a tetrahedral coordination symmetry to $Mo^{6+}$ with an octahedral one, $Mo^6+[T]/Mo^{6+}[O]$ value.

  • In this work, the adsorption characteristics and mechanical interfacial properties of treated silicas by silane coupling agents, such as, ${\gamma}$-methacryloxy propyl trimethoxy silane (MPS), ${\gamma}$-glycidoxy propyl trimethoxy silane (GPS), and ${\gamma}$-mercapto propyl trimethoxy silane (MCPS), were investigated. The equilibrium spreading pressure ($pi_e$), surface free energy ($gamma_s$ s/), and specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) were studied by the BET method with $N_2$/77 K adsorption. The developments of nonpolar functional groups of the silica surfaces treated by silane coupling agents led to the increase in the $S_{BET}$, $pi_e$, and $gamma_s$, resulting in the improved tearing energy ($G_{mc}$)of the silica/rubber composites. The composites treated by MPS showed the superior mechanical interfacial properties in these systems. These results explained by changing of crystalline size, dispersion, agglomerate, and surface functional group of silica/rubber composites.

  • The surface structure and the pore size distribution of the activated carbon impregnated with silver have been investigated. It has been confirmed that the impregnants had an effect only on the external surface, not on the internal surface and that adsorption isotherms of both impregnated and non-impregnated activated carbons were classified as a typical BET type-I. As the amount of the impregnants increased, the amounts of adsorption, the specific surface area, and the micropore volume decreased and the window blocking was observed. The average pore diameter of the activated carbon impregnated with silver was observed to show the constant values regardless of the amount of the impregnants.

  • Water vapor adsorption isotherms were measured for samples of the A horizons of five typical Korean soils. The experimental data were fitted to the BET and Aranovich adsorption equations. The adsorption isotherms studied followed the BET equation for the relative water vapor pressures in 0.03-0.33 range and the Aranovich equation in 0.03-0.6 range. The calculated surface areas were higher for Aranovich than for BET and opposite relations were found for adsorption energies. For the description of the water adsorption on soils, the use of the Aranovich theory is recommended.

  • Multilayer adsorption isotherms of nitrogen and argon on the perovskite-type mixed oxides, synthesized by a citrate coprecipitation method, are determined at the liquid nitrogen temperature using a gravimetric adsorption apparatus. The volume of the adsorbed gas are plotted against the statistical thickness of the adsorbed layer, calculated from several universal adsorption isotherms one after another. The t-method area obtained from this plot is compared with the BET area and finally the appropriateness of universal adsorption isotherms is then discussed on the basis of the plot.

  • It was studied to utilize wasted food as a starting material to produce for activated carbon. The wasted food was chemically activated with zinc chloride. Experiments were carried out at different chemical ratios(activating agent/wasted foods), activation temperatures, and activation time. The activated products were characterized by measuring the iodine and methylene blue number, the BET surface area, the pore volume, the micropore ratio, the pore diameter, the yields and the scanning electron microscope(SEM). For the products activated by impregnation ratio of 1.0 of ZnCl$_2$ at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 60 min in a rotary kiln reactor had iodine number of 480 mg/g, methylene blue number of 95 mL/g, BET surface area of 410 m$^2$/g, pore volume of 0.248 cm$^3$/g, and average pore diameter of 2.43 nm, respectively. The activated carbon obtained had the contribution of micropore area of 70.7% to the total pore area and micropore volume of 53.2% to the total pore volume.

  • We have investigated various kind of graphite and MCMB6-28 to develop carbon negative electrode for lithium ion secondary battery. The interlayer length of them was $3.358{\sim}3.363{\AA}$ and the BET specific surface area was $2.95{\sim}26.15m^2/g$. From this study, When the interlayer of them was large and the BET specific surface area was high, the electrochemical characteristics of them was very excellent. Adding 0, 3, 5, wt% of KJ-Black as conducting agent to various graphitic carbon active materials, interface resistance of electrode and electrolyte was less, but rechargeability was better at 3 wt%. At constant current charge and discharge test, discharge capacity was small according to large current.

  • The effect of physical properties of coal fuels and carbon particle on performance of DCFC (Direct Carbon Fuel Cell) was investigated. Shenhua and Adaro were selected as coal fuel and carbon particle was used for comparing with coal. The Ultimate, proximate, SEM, XRD, and BET analysis of samples were conducted. The component of char was more important than that of raw coal because the operating temperature of reactor is higher than devolatilization region of coal. The surface area and volume of pores affected significantly the performance of the system than content of fixed carbon or char rates. The performance of DCFC with carbon particle was in proportional to working temperature.
