Backoff mechanism serves as one of the key technologies in the MAC-layer of wireless mobile networks. The traditional Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) mechanism in IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) and other existing backoff mechanisms poses several performance issues. For instance, the Contention Window (CW) oscillations occur frequently; a low delay QoS guarantee cannot be provided for real-time transmission, and services with different priorities are not differentiated. For these problems, we present a novel Multi-Priority service differentiated and Adaptive Backoff (MPAB) algorithm over IEEE 802.11 DCF for wireless mobile networks in this paper. In this algorithm, the backoff stage is chosen adaptively according to the channel status and traffic priority, and the forwarding and receding transition probability between the adjacent backoff stages for different priority traffic can be controlled and adjusted for demands at any time. We further employ the 2-dimensional Markov chain model to analyze the algorithm, and derive the analytical expressions of the saturation throughput and average medium access delay. Both the accuracy of the expressions and the algorithm performance are verified through simulations. The results show that the performance of the MPAB algorithm can offer a higher throughput and lower delay than the BEB algorithm.
The MAC of IEEE 802.11 WLAN to control data transmission uses two control methods called DCF and PCF. The DCF controls the transmission based on CSMA/CA The BEB backoff algorithm of DCF shows relatively excellent performance in situation that the number of competing station is less, but has a problem that performance of throughput and delay is degraded in situation that the number of competing station is increased. This paper mathematically analyzes an MIMD backoff algorithm considering retry limit that increases the CW to doubled after collision and decreases smoothly the CW to halves after successful transmission in order to reduce the collision probability. To prove efficiency of the MIMD backoff algorithm, lots of simulations are conducted and analyzed.

Collision Management Protocol (CMP) efficiently resolves collisions when data frames are transmitted in networks consisting of HomPNA 3.0 asynchronous MAC mode device with random access. Unlike Distributed Fair Priority Queueing (DFPQ) algorithm in HomePNA 2.0 or Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm in IEEE 802.11, order of retransmission is decided according to Collision Signaling Sequence (CSS) values allocated to each device. Thus, CMP can minimize the number of mean collisions because order of retransmission is decided in a deterministic way. In this paper. we evaluate the saturation performance of CMP in HomePNA 3.0 using an analytic method.

In sensor medium access control (SMAC) protocol, sensor nodes can only access the channel in the scheduling and listening period. However, this fixed working method may generate data latency and high conflict. To solve those problems, scheduling duty in the original SMAC protocol is divided into multiple small scheduling duties (micro duty MD). By applying different micro-dispersed contention channel, sensor nodes can reduce the collision probability of the data and thereby save energy. Based on the given micro-duty, this paper presents an adaptive duty cycle (DC) and back-off algorithm, aiming at detecting the fixed duty cycle in SMAC protocol. According to the given buffer queue length, sensor nodes dynamically change the duty cycle. In the context of low duty cycle and low flow, fair binary exponential back-off (F-BEB) algorithm is applied to reduce data latency. In the context of high duty cycle and high flow, capture avoidance binary exponential back-off (CA-BEB) algorithm is used to further reduce the conflict probability for saving energy consumption. Based on the above two contexts, we propose an improved SMAC protocol, micro duty adaptive SMAC protocol (MDA-SMAC). Comparing the performance between MDA-SMAC protocol and SMAC protocol on the NS-2 simulation platform, the results show that, MDA-SMAC protocol performs better in terms of energy consumption, latency and effective throughput than SMAC protocol, especially in the condition of more crowded network traffic and more sensor nodes.

The contention resolution algorithm with the limited packet delay time as well stable distribution as the packet delay time is proposed and implementes for improving the mean packet delay time in the network employing CSMA/CD as the access method. The implementation of node controller is based on IEEE 802.2 standard logical link control(LLC) and IEEE 802.3 standard medium access control(MAC). Some portion of IEEE 802.3 Standard MAC, and the Binary Exponential Back-off(BEB) algorithm is replaced by the proposed algorithm. From the view of normalized mean packet transmission delay time, the controller implemented here can be applicable to the office-automation system, and the factory-and laboratory-automation environment where the limited time criterion is very significant.

IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) employs the distributed coordination function (DCF) as the fundamental medium access function. DCF operates with binary exponential backoff (BEB) in order to avoid frame collisions. However it may waste wireless resources because collisions occur when multiple stations are contending for frame transmissions. In order to solve this problem, a binary negative-exponential backoff (BNEB) algorithm has been proposed that uses the maximum contention window size whenever a collision occurs. However, when the number of contending stations is small, the performance of BNEB is degraded due to the unnecessarily long backoff time. In this paper, we propose the adaptive BNEB (A-BNEB) algorithm to maximize the throughput regardless of the number of contending stations. A-BNEB estimates the number of contending stations and uses this value to adjust the maximum contention window size. Simulation results show that A-BNEB significantly improves the performance of IEEE 802.11 DCF and can maintain a high throughput irrespective of the number of contending stations.
IEEE 802.11 defines distributed coordination function (DCF), which is characterized by CSMA/CA and binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm. Most modifications on DCF so far have focused on updating of the contention window (CW) size depending on the outcome of own frame transmission without considering freezing periods experienced in the backoff interval. We propose two simple but novel schemes which effectively utilize the number of freezing periods sensed during the current backoff interval. The proposed schemes can be applied to DCF and its family, such as double increment double decrement (DIDD). Saturation throughput of the proposed schemes is analyzed by means of Bianchi's Markovian model. Computer simulation validates the accuracy of the analysis. Numerical results based on IEEE 802.11b show that up to about 20% improvement of saturation throughput can be achieved by combining the proposed scheme with conventional schemes when applied to the basic access procedure.

In this paper we introduce a bandwidth allocation algorithm and admission control policy for IEEE 802.16 broadband wireless access standard. The proposed mechanism is practical and compatible to the IEEE 802.16. Our scheme provides QoS support to high priority traffic and high throughput in low priority traffic. The simulation show that the proposed scheme includes QoS support for real-time traffic and we presented that BS determine a efficient contention mini-slot size. We have shown the relationship between traffic size and its QoS requirements and the network performance.

Slotted ALOHA(S-ALOHA) is widely used in local wireless network. We analyze the performance of contention-based model in wireless LAN using S-ALOHA protocol. We analyze the performance of binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm under the slotted ALOHA protocol: whenever a node's message which tries to reserve a channel is involved in a collision for the ith time, it chooses one of the next $2^i$ frames with equal probability and attempts the reservation again. We derive the expected access delay and throughput which is defined as the expected number of messages that reserve a channel in a frame. A simulation study is performed to verify our method.

An inseparable challenge associated with every random access network is the design of an efficient Collision Resolution Algorithm (CRA), since collisions cannot be completely avoided in such network. To maximize the collision resolution efficiency of a popular CRA, namely Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB), we propose a reactive backoff algorithm. The proposed backoff algorithm is reactive in the sense that it updates the contention window based on the previously selected backoff value in the failed contention stage to avoid a typical type of collision, referred as cross-collision. Cross-collision would occur if the contention slot pointed by the currently selected backoff value appeared to be present in the overlapped portion of the adjacent (the previous and the current) windows. The proposed reactive algorithm contributes to significant performance improvements in the network since it offers a supplementary feature of Cross Collision Exclusion (XCE) and also retains the legacy collision mitigation features. We formulate a Markovian model to emulate the characteristics of the proposed algorithm. Based on the solution of the model, we then estimate the throughput and delay performances of WLAN following the signaling mechanisms of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) considering IEEE 802.11b system parameters. We validate the accuracy of the analytical performance estimation framework by comparing the analytically obtained results with the results that we obtain from the simulation experiments performed in ns-2. Through the rigorous analysis, based on the validated model, we show that the proposed reactive cross collision exclusionary backoff algorithm significantly enhances the throughput and reduces the average packet delay in the network.
