A DEA and Malmquist Index Approach to Measuring Productivity and Efficiency of Korean Trucking Companies (DEA와 Malmquist 지수를 활용한 화물자동차운송업체의 효율성 및 생산성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency and productivity of domestic trucking transportation companies using DEA-CCR, BCC, and Malmquist indexes. Here, we analyze the top 14 domestic trucking transportation companies, based on cargo volume. The number of freight agents, trucks, and assets are used as input variables, and cargo volumes and sales are used as output variables. The efficiency of trucking transportation companies is examined using a DEA approach, and Malmquist indexes are applied to analyze productivity. According to the DEA results, the efficiency levels of the CCR, BCC, and scales for three companies (DMU 4, 5, and 10) are 1, indicating that these companies are operated efficiently. At the same time, the Malmquist indexes show that all companies have values smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that their productivity decreased. Furthermore, the TECI indexes were all larger than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating that the companies are efficient. Lastly, all TCI indexes are smaller than 1, except for the period 2012-2013, indicating regressing trends.

  • The globalization of the banking industry has highlighted the importance of the internal stability of the banks. For internal stability, the efficiency and productivity of the bank becomes more important, and the bank must be improved. To improve the efficiency and productivity, a methodology for analyzing the current state of the bank's needs was made based on the BCC of DEA and the Malmquist productivity index. This model was developed as a diagnostic method that can analyze the efficiency and productivity of the bank. As a result of the analysis, the position of the bank and the position of the model studied were similar. The BCC-Malmquist model can be applied to the other areas and provide a management strategy.

The Changes of Technical Efficiency and Malmquist Productivity of Land Transportation by Region (지역에 따른 육상운송의 효율성과 생산성 분석)

  • Inland transportation system has been improving inefficiencies and structural problems due to excess of supply. Therefore, inland transportation market needs to reform its regional logistics structure in order to increase its competitiveness. To improve the solution, the research studied efficiencies and productivity of inland transportation systems in regions. In order to obtain specific facts, each cities' five years of (2005-2009) balanced panel data on inland transportation system has been studied. According to CCR and BCC analysis, Ul-San has been evaluated as the most efficient DMU during 2005-2008. In addition, in 2009, Seoul was the most efficient DMU. Also, according to Window analysis, Gwan-Ju and Gwangwon-do scored 0.062. Therefore, they were estimated as stable DMUs. According to Malmquist productivity analysis, average productivity indexes of four terms of Chungcheongnam-do and Chungcheongbuk-do haves been increased to 6.6% and 7.3%. I hope this study contributes to the improvement of regional inland transportation system.

A Study on the Operating Efficiency of Parcel Delivery Sub-terminal Agency focus on A company (택배서브터미널 대리점 운영효율성에 관한 연구 (A사를 중심으로))

  • This study was aimed at analyzing the operational efficiency of DPAs(the delivery and pickup agents), which serve as sub-terminals in parcel delivery services, using CCR/BCC models in DEA. The input variables included the number of employees, and the amount of equipment and the operating expenses. The output variable was revenue value. The efficiency for the period from 2014 to 2016 was analyzed. The results revealed that the operational efficiency improved in 2016, compared with 2014, in both CCR and BCC models. According to the benchmarking analysis, DMU 1 and DMU 7 showed higher efficiency in 2016. The inefficiency analysis based on the BCC model showed increased efficiency of all factors in 2016 when compared with 2014. The Malmquist productivity index (MPI) dropped slightly as a result of technical changes and indicated a declining technical efficiency in all DMUs. This study suggests the need for government-led systematic improvement and support for DPAs by providing current insight into the parcel delivery industry and analyzing DPAs' operational efficiency in Korea for the first time. This research performed efficiency analysis of DPAs located in new town of paju and gimpo cities. In future research, comparative study on efficiency analysis including new town, old town area, and other cities are needed.

Research on Eco-efficiently Evaluation of China Based on DEA-Malmquist Index (DEA-Malmquist 지수를 이용한 중국 환경효율에 관한 평가 연구)

  • The DEA-BCC model. And the Malmquist index have been used, from static and dynamic perspectives, to measure the eco-efficiency of 30 cities and provinces in China from 2011 to 2020. The results shows that: the average static eco-efficiency of 30 cities and provinces in China is 0.643. Differences exists all over China. While Shanghai and Beijing are ecologically efficient, other 28 cities and provinces are faced with different extents of inefficiency. There are also differences among regions, which generally show the spatial distribution pattern with high efficiency in the eastern regions while low in the western regions. The Malmquist index of eco-efficiency in total 30 cities and provinces shows a healthy growth trend, and the technological progress. Acts as its main driving force. Therefore, eastern regions should enhance the. radiation capacity, strengthen the synergy among regions, give full play to. The advantages of each regions. It is sensible to improve the eco-efficiency by means of optimizing the industrial structure, enhancing the technological level and improving eco-efficiency of China and realizing green development.

Analyzing Efficiency of Korean Automobile Ports (국내 자동차부두 효율성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is using DEA-CCR, BCC, and Malmquist analysis to determine the efficiency and productivity of Korean automobile ports. We analyzed eight Korean automobile port terminals, using the number of workers and size of ports as input variables and the number of processed car as output variables. An efficiency analysis of the eight automobile port terminals for the four-year span from 2013 to 2016 revealed efficiency levels of 1 for the CCR, BCC, and the scales for Ulsan port and the Gwangyang port terminal, indicating efficient operation of the terminals. As a result of benchmarking analysis, Gunsan port 1, 2 terminal, Incheon port, Pyeongtaek Dangjin 2 terminal should benchmark Busan Port and Ulsan Port. Conversely, Malmquist analysis showed a slight increase in the production volume from 2013 to 2015, but a decline to 1 or less from 2015 to 2016. In the case of TECI the technology was confirmed as effective at 1 or more from 2014 to 2015. The TCI value was 0.87 for the period from 2015 to 2016. During this period, the TCI index of all terminals was less than 1.

Relative Efficiency and Productivity Change of the Korean Non-Life Insurance Firms (국내 손해보험회사의 상대적 효율성 및 생산성 변화)

  • This study measures the relative efficiency and productivity change of the Korean Non-Life Insurance Firms using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2004-2007. The main results of this study can by summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2004-2007, the number of efficient firms(CCR value is one) are one firm, one firm, one firm, one firm respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2004-2007, the number of efficient firms(BCC value is one) are five firms, five firms, six firms, six firms respectively. Third, In case of return to scale for 2004-2007, DRS are five firms, DRS are five firms, DRS are six firms, DRS are six firms respectively, Fourth, Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2004-2007 are 0.99 in 2004-2005, 1.04 in 2005-2006, 1.06 in 2006-2007.

Productivity Change and Relative Efficiency of Korean Professional Baseball Teams (한국 프로야구 구단의 상대적 효율성 및 생산성 변화)

  • Most of professional baseball teams are not good for business condition because of operation costs in spite of support of mother company. This study measured the relative efficiency and productivity change of the Korean professional baseball teams using DEA model and Malmquist Index for 2006-2008. The main results of this study can be summarized as follows. First, in case of efficiency of CCR for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(CCR value is one) are two(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions), two(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns), two(Lotte Giants, LG Twins) respectively. Second, in case of efficiency of BCC for 2006-2008, the number of efficient professional baseball teams(BCC value is one) are three(Doosan Bears, Samsung Lions, LG Twins ), four(Doosan Bears, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions, Kia Tigers), four(Lotte Giants, LG Twins, SK Wyberns, Samsung Lions) respectively. Third, average of Malmquist Index representing productivity change for 2006-2008 are 1.0615, 1.0293 respectively. These values mean increase of productivity. Results of this study can be used by inefficient professional baseball teams to improve inefficiency.

A Trend Analysis on Scale Efficiency of the Port of Gwangyang: 1994-2004 (광양항의 규모효율성 추세분석: 1994-2004)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the trend on scale efficiency of the Port of Gwangyang from 1994 to 2004 using CCR, BCC, and Malmquist index approaches. The main results are as follows. first, scale efficiency shows a 50% similar [5(94/95, 95/96, 97/98, 2001/2002, 2003/2004) out of 10] pattern to technical efficiency change. Second, total factor productivity increased at 48.57% rate of growth on average in 6 out of 10 periods except 96/97, 97/98, 99/2000, and 2000/2001. 2003/2004 period is the one period experiencing rapid total factor productivity changes, mainly due to technical progress. Third, the ranking order of accumulative indices is scale efficiency change, TFP change, efficiency change, technical change, and pure efficiency change. The main policy implication of this paper is that according to the CCR, BCC, and Malmquist results, the Port of Gwangyang should develop the plan for enhancing the 5 Malmquist indices with following the management way of benchmarking ports.

A Study on the Economic Efficiency of Tourism Industry in China's Bohai Rim Region Using DEA Model (DEA 모델을 이용한 중국 환 발해만 지역 관광산업의 경제효율성에 관한 연구)

  • Based on the tourism input-output data of five provinces and cities in China's Bohai Rim region from 2015~2021, this study analyzes the efficiency of regional tourism using DEA-BCC and DEA-Malmquist index, as well as its contribution to regional economic efficiency, and identifies factors influencing the comprehensive efficiency. The research results indicate that the comprehensive efficiency of the tourism industry in the China Bohai Sea region has reached an optimal level of 88.9%, but there is still room for improvement, with overall fluctuations. The overall productivity of the tourism industry exhibits a "U"-shaped fluctuating pattern, with growth mainly driven by technological advancements. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the region experienced a nearly 50% decrease in total factor productivity in 2019~2020. However, in 2021, with the implementation of various government stimulus policies, the tourism efficiency rapidly recovered to 80% of pre-pandemic levels. In terms of the impact of the tourism industry on the regional economy in the China Bohai Sea region, Hebei Province stands out as a significant contributor. Based on the aforementioned research findings, the following recommendations are proposed in three aspects: optimizing the supply structure, increasing innovation investment, and strengthening internal collaboration. These recommendations provide valuable insights for enhancing regional tourism efficiency and promoting regional synergy.
