This study was carried out to estimate the runoff loading characteristics of the non-point source pollutions in the Youngsan river basins by the method of land-use types and rainfall. The lysimeter test, rainfall and stream flowmeter measurement were performed to develop the pollutant loading unit discharged from the non-point sources. As the non-point sources, the unit pollutant discharge rates were different from the land-use types such as paddy field, upland, forest, housing site and others. The pollutant loading units classified by land-use types in the Youngsan river basins are as follows: The total BOD loading rate is 15.3 ton/day and the housing site is discharged 50.6%, the total T-N loading rate is 6.0 ton/day and the paddy field and upland is discharged 77.6%, and the total T-P loading rate is 0.39 ton/day and the paddy field and upland is discharged 81.2%. The pollutant loadings by rainfall in the Youngsan river basins are about 7,425 ton/year of BOD, 324 ton/year of T-N and 118 ton/year of T-P, respectively.

This study investigates the change of flow characteristics over 10 Asian river basins in the past 30 years (1976-2005). The variation is estimated from The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model outputs based on reanalysis data which was bias-corrected for Asian monsoon reagion. The model was firstly calibrated and validated using observed data for daily streamflow. Four statistical criteria were applied to evaluate the model performance, including Coefficient of determination (R2), Nash - Sutcliffe model efficiency coeffi cient (NSE), Root mean square error-observations standard deviation ratio (RSR), and Percentage Bias (PBIAS). Then parameters of the model were applied for the historical period 1976-2005. The estimates show a temporal non-considerable increasing rate of daily streamflow in most of the basins over the past 30 years. The difference of monthly discharge becomes more significant during the months in the wet season (June to September) in all basins. The seasonal runoff shows significant difference in Summer and Autumn, when the rainfall intensity is higher. The line showing averaged runoff/rainfall ratio in all basins is sharp, presenting high variation of seasonal runoff/rainfall ratio from season to season.

This paper provides the checklist of statistical methods in the water environmental research of Han and Nakdong river basins in South Korea. There are many errors pointed out in adopting statistical methods for the researches, as an example, basic statistical assumptions are missed for t-tests or regression analyses. Some new ideas are proposed for better researches of the river basins in Korea.
The entire South Korea was divided into several main river basins and drilling data through the South Korea were grouped in accordance with the basins. Thickness of each alluvial formation in each basin was averaged to produce the thickness of the whole alluvium. From studying the alluvial stratigraphy of each basin the condition of the alluvial sedimentation was studied and compared between different basins. Thus the characteristics of the alluvial sedimentation in each basin was clarified.
This paper aims to assessing impact of reduction of non-point source pollution in the Bokha Stream watershed. The BASINS/HSPF model was calibrated and verified for water flow and water qualities using Total Maximum Daily Load 8days data from 2006 to 2007. Accuracy of the BASINS/HSPF models in simulating hydrology and water quality was compared and there were somewhat differences of statistical results, but water flow and water quality were simulated in good conditions over the study period. The applicability of models was tested to evaluate non-point source control scenarios to response hydrology and water quality in the Bokha stream using various measures which include BMPs approach and change of landuse. The evaluation of reduction of non-point source pollution was developed using load-duration curve. Despite strong reduction of non-point source, there are not satiated target quality at low flow season.

For the water quality management of stream and lake, it is important to estimate and control nonpoint source loading to meet the water quality standard. So, integrated watershed management is required. BASINS is a multipurpose environmental analysis system for use by regional, state, and local agencies in performing watershed and water quality based studies. BASINS was developed by the USEPA to facilitate examination of environmental information, to support analysis of environmental systems and to provide a framework for examining management alternatives. BASINS contains HSPF which is one of the watershed runoff model. By using HSPF, nonpoint source loading from upper stream watershed was estimated. As a result, the simulated runoff was in a good agreement with the observed data and indicated reasonable applicability for whole watershed.
Several volcanics are found within the Tertiary sedimentary basins, southeastern part of Korea. The sedimentary basins have been interpreted to have formed in the framework of separation of the East Sea. The volcanics are Eocene or Early and Middle Miocene in ages, showing a distincetve chronological gap, and show mafic and silicic (bimodal) in composotion. The Miocene volcanics were regionally and stratigraphically grouped into two varieties along the Hyeongsan fault; younger volcanics (13.6-15.2 Ma, K) from the north of the fault, erupted after the opening of the East Sea, and older volcanics (16.2-21.1 Ma) from the south of the fault. The purpose of this paper is to present a strategic approach to selecting prior areas of soil erosion to be examined for effective soil conservation planning and management, in conjunction with remote sensing data and GIS skill for surface characteristics. To do this, two basins are selected: Andong and Imha basin. Geographically one is in the vicinity of the other but turbidity in the main reservoir of each basin is quite different. it is important to clarify general behavior of soil erosion driven by rainfall event for both basins for further understanding and effective soil conservation planning and management. Also, Both basins are divided into several sub-basins and the severity of soil loss is intensively investigated to identify areas with high erosion potential for each sub-basin so that the efficiency of soil conservation program may increase. Especially, this study analyzed soil erodibility factor(K), topographic factor(LS), cover management factor(C) and soil erosion; 3 sub-basins for Andong basin (up-, mid-, downstream) and 6 sub-basins for Imha basin (up-, mid-, and downstream for two tributaries) because Imha basin consists of two tributaries (Banyeon and Yongjeon river). The approach suggested herein will provide a guideline for choosing prior areas to be examined and managed for soil conservation planning.

The decision of design flood in river basins is very important in the aspect of flood control. The design flood of rivers was estimated according to the size and importance of basins. As the damage of floods increases more and more and the importance of defense against floods increases further, the presumption of design flood can be very important. Especially, what influences most greatly flood is rainfall. However, in spite of equal rainfall, the estimated flood differ according to the features of basins. The fact that the features of basins influence greatly the estimation of flood was confirmed by the preceding research results and experiences. However, although many rivers have their own basin features, the research on how these basin features are related to the estimation of design flood, is not yet sufficient. The purpose of this study is to identify how the design flood estimated previously by river arrangement basic plan is correlated with topography factors, and so investigate the correlation between basin topography factors and design flood in order to provide the additional information for the unmeasured basins or the middle/small river basins where their river plan is not established.
The development of the method for flood runoff analysis representing Korean mountain basins have been one of big concerns for Korean hydrologists for several decades. Several traditional methods dealing with unit hydrograph have been restricted to be used in Korea basins, because of its drawbacks due to its originality from other countries and the uncertainties of control parameters as well as its linearity assumption between rainfall and runoff relationship. In this paper, several geomorphological similarity relationships for Korean mountain basins was developed by using the experimental data over 40 Korean basins. Then those were applied directly to geomorphological unit hydrograph theory to meet Korean geomorphological unit hydrograph. The developed method was applied to Andong Dam basin. The results show the applicability and simplicity of the developed Korean geomorphological unit hydrograph generally for Korean mountain basins in future. It might be needed for more validations and applications of this method over Korean regions.
