Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a visual feedbackbased balance training, using force platform biofeedback, on the postural balance of elderly faller. Methods: Fifty one community-dwelling older adults (aged 66-88 years) with a recent history of fall participated in the study. Participants were randomized to an experimental group (EG, n=25) and to a control group (CG, n=26). The EG participated in training sessions three times/week for 6 weeks. Visual feedbackbased balance training with the a computerized force platform with visual feedback screen was used in the experimental group. Static balance (center of gravity) and dynamic balance (Functional reach test, Timed "Up & Go" test, Berg balance scale) were assessed before and after end of training. Results: A significant improvement in static balance and dynamic balance were demonstrated within the EG (p<.05), but not in the CG. Conclusion: Visual feedback-based balance training may be an effective intervention to improve postural balance of elderly fallers.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of balance training on different support surface (affected and non-affected sides) on the balance and gait function of chronic stroke patients. METHODS: The patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups. Group 1 received balance training on the stable surface, group 2 received balance training on the unstable surface, group 3 received balance training on different support surface (affected side: stable surface, non-affected side: unstable surface), and group 4 received balance training on different support surface (affected side: unstable, non-affected side: stable). Twelve sessions (30 min/d, 3 times/wk for 4 wk) were applied. There were assessed before and after the intervention with Balancia, functional reach test (FRT), lateral reach test (LRT), timed up-and-go (TUG), and 10-meter walking test (10MWT). RESULTS: After the training, all of the groups improved significantly than before training in Balancia, FRT, LRT, TUG, and 10MWT. There were significantly variable in sway distance, FRT, LRT, TUG, and 10MWT among the 4 groups. Post hoc analysis revealed that the group 3 had significantly higher results than other 3 groups in sway distance, and FRT, LRT, TUG, and 10MWT. CONCLUSION: Balance training on different support surface (affected side: stable surface, non-affected side: unstable surface) could facilitate a stronger beneficial effect on balance and walking ability than other balance trainings on different support surface in patients with stroke.
Appropriate physical position and balance means giving the least stress and the most useful biomechanically to the body. As this fails, one would have functional recovery problem regardless of disability. There reported better effective on Dynamic training rather than Static training for a proper recovery of physical position, and additionally required Sensory Feedback. Those who have disability of balance, especially Central Nervous System lesion should he provided with variety of Sensory Feedback, and also Dynamic Balance training used by is quite effective.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of core muscle training on balance ability. Forty subjects in their 20s participated in a 6 week core muscle training program. Balance ability before and after the intervention were assessed and analyzed using the Romberg test, which was conducted on the floor, pedalo, and balancefit. The differences between the measurement methods of balance ability using varied platforms was also compared and analyzed. After the 6-week core exercise training program, the training group represented statistically significant increases in all 3 methods for static balance ability. In the control group, all 3 methods represented no statistically significant increases. Upon comparing the different methods of the Romberg test, there were no notable differences between conducting the test on varying platforms for both groups. This study suggests that the core muscle exercise training program increased the balance ability.

Purpose : This study was performed to examine the effect of stimulation task-oriented training on the balance ability of the hemiplegic patients caused by stroke. Methods : We made a random sampling of 25 hemiplegic patients caused by stroke. 10 patients(experimental group)were treated by simulation Task-oriented training and Conventional training used by balance pad. The other 10 patients(control group) were only treated by Conventional training used by balance pad. During the training, 3 patients from the experimental group and 2 patients from the control group were excluded by private affairs. The control group has done Conventional training 6 times a week for 6 weeks. And experimental group has done Simulation task-oriented training two times, conventional training four times a week for 6 weeks. Balance ability was assessed by Fuctional Reaching Test (FRT) : unilateral and bilateral reaching. Results : In comparison of FRT before and after training, two groups all was significantly improved(p<.05). But bilateral reaching variation was significantly improved in experimental group. Conclusion : we can use simulation Task-oriented training valuably to increase balance ability of hemiplegic patients.
Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of strength training targeting medial quadriceps/hamstrings and non-targeting strength training on dynamic balance. Method: A total of 51 healthy subjects were randomly assigned to control, targeting strength training, or non-targeting training groups. To measure the dynamic balance, the star excursion balance test (SEBT) was performed before and after training. The SEBT parameters were compared using repeated measures ANOVA, and post-hoc paired t test at a significance level of 0.05. Results: Greater anterior (p= .011), anteromedial (p= .001), medial (p< .001), lateral (p< .001), and anterolateral (p= .001) reach distances were found between pre- and post-training in the strength training targeting medial thigh muscles group. Only greater lateral reach distance was found after non-targeting strength training (p= .029). In addition, no differences were found for any SEBT scores in the control group. Conclusion: Strength training targeting medial quadriceps and hamstrings can improve the dynamic balance, thereby it positively affected in lower extremity injury risk, whereas non-targeting strength training rarely changes the dynamic balance.

Purpose : This study aimed to compare the effect of two conditions (visual and kinesthetic) of motor imagery training on static and dynamic balance. Methods : Fifteen patients with post-stroke hemiparesis volunteered to participate in this study. Two motor imagery training conditions, for 10minute trials, employed with audiotape instructions. Measurements were performed at pretest, posttest and 1-hour follow up in both static and dynamic balance. Results : Measures were significantly different both static and dynamic balance tests between treatment conditions (kinesthetic imagery more than visual imagery) at the pretest, post test, and 1-hour follow-up (p<.05). Measures of both static and dynamic balance tests, for both conditions, improved significantly from pretest to posttest (p<.05), and was maintained at 1-hour follow up. Conclusion : This study showed that both imagery training applications were effective treatment strategies for both static and dynamic balance. When comparing the two treatment conditions, kinesthetic motor imagery training was more effective than the visual motor imagery training in static and dynamic balance.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the balance training on the stable and unstable supporting surfaces for the subjects with functional ankle instability. Methods: Twenty-nine subjects with functional ankle instability were randomly assigned to the stable group (n=14) and the unstable group (n=15). Balance training was conducted twenty minutes a day on the stable surface for the stable group and on the airostep for the unstable group three times a week for four weeks. Balance training program was consisted of ten steps by eye opened or closed and two or one leg standing. X-speed for transverse balance and Y-speed for longitudinal balance were measured with eye opened and closed in affected leg standing position. Results: There were significant improvements of balance ability in eye opened (p<.01) and eye closed standing (p<.01) in stable group. Unstable group also showed significant improvements of balance ability in eye opened (p<.01) and eye closed standing (p<.01). There were no statistical differences in the magnitude of improvement between the groups (p<.05). Conclusions: Based on such results, it can be said that balance training on the stable surface is effective as much as training on the unstable surface for the subjects with functional ankle instability.
