  • Portland cement concrete, which has higher strength and stiffness than asphalt concrete, has been widely applied on pavements. However, the brittle fracture characteristic of cement concrete restricts its application in highway pavement construction. Since the polypropylene fiber can improve the fracture toughness of cement concrete, Polypropylene Fiber-Reinforced Concrete (PFRC) is attracting more and more attention in civil engineering. In order to study the effect of polypropylene fiber on the generation and evolution process of the local deformation band in concrete, a series of three-point bending tests were performed using the new technology of the digital speckle correlation method for FRC notched beams with different volumetric contents of polypropylene fiber. The modified Double-K model was utilized for the first time to calculate the stress intensity factors of instability and crack initiation of fiber-reinforced concrete beams. The results indicate that the polypropylene fiber can enhance the fracture toughness. Based on the modified Double-K fracture theory, the maximum fracture energy of concrete with 3.2% fiber (in volume) is 47 times higher than the plain concrete. No effort of fiber content on the strength of the concrete was found. Meanwhile to balance the strength and resistant fracture toughness, concrete with 1.6% fiber is recommended to be applied in pavement construction.

  • Generally, characteristics of electromechanical actuators are coupled with the mechanical and the electrical properties. Important mechanical parameters of these actuators are the achievable force and displacement in the presence of electric field. These mechanical parameters are related to the stress and strain of the materials and the actuator geometry. This paper presents how to measure the blocked force by using the micro-balance. The blocked force is defined as the force produced by the transducer under an applied voltage when the tip is constrained to zero motion. Also, a theoretical force by using the cantilever beam model is calculated under elastic domain. From the sample of 4 cm $\times$ 1 cm $\times$ 20 $\mu$m, the blocked farce measured from the equipment is 20.3 $\mu$N at 8 V$_{DC}$. By comparing it with the theoretical value, 24.9 $\mu$N, the blocked force measurement is acceptable. The furce measurement is also investigated with different AC electric fields and the frequency.

  • Since the computing environment changes very rapidly, the estimation of software effort is very difficult because it is not easy to collect a sufficient number of relevant cases from the historical data. If we pinpoint the cases, the number of cases becomes too small. However is we adopt too many cases, the relevance declines. So in this paper we attempt to balance the number of cases and relevance. Since many researches on software effort estimation showed that the neural network models perform at least as well as the other approaches, so we selected the neural network model as the basic estimator. We propose a search method that finds the right level of relevant cases for the neural network model. For the selected case set. eliminating the qualitative input factors with the same values can reduce the scale of the neural network model. Since there exists a multitude of combinations of case sets, we need to search for the optimal reduced neural network model and corresponding case, set. To find the quasi-optimal model from the hierarchy of reduced neural network models, we adopted the beam search technique and devised the Case-Set Selection Algorithm. This algorithm can be adopted in the case-adaptive software effort estimation systems.

  • To perform performance-based seismic design of buildings, it is necessary clear goal for usage and stability after an earthquake. To clear this goal, it requires a review of the constituent material of the building and, in particular, a member used as an indicator of the residual strain is useful. There are more usage of prestressed concrete because of prestressing steel witch has characteristics of the origin-oriented. In this study, the goal is estimating of residual strain on the prestressed concrete beam member. The expression for angle of deformed prestressed concrete beam member was obtained from using of curvature on the critical section and the equivalent plastic hinge length based on 'equivalent plastic hinge length method'. Considering the balance of strength and deformation conditions, suitable analysis values were derived from 'split Element Method'. Through various parametric studies, various factors affecting the residual strain were decided. Based on the results of this study, it is expected many researches will be proceed in the future.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) acquisition protocols on reducing the effective radiation dose while maintaining image quality. Materials and Methods: The effective dose emitted by a CBCT device was calculated using thermoluminescent dosimeters placed in a Rando Alderson phantom. Image quality was assessed by 3 experienced evaluators. The relationship between image quality and confidence was evaluated using the Fisher exact test, and the agreement among raters was assessed using the kappa test. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to investigate whether the technical parameters could predict the effective dose. P-values<0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance. Results: The optimized protocol (3 mA, 99 kVp, and 450 projection images) demonstrated good image quality and a lower effective dose for radiation-sensitive organs. Image quality and confidence had consistent values for all structures (P<0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis resulted in a statistically significant model. The milliamperage (b=0.504; t=3.406; P=0.027), kilovoltage peak (b=0.589; t=3.979; P=0.016) and number of projection images (b=0.557; t=3.762; P=0.020) were predictors of the effective dose. Conclusion: Optimized CBCT acquisition protocols can significantly reduce the effective radiation dose while maintaining acceptable image quality by adjusting the milliamperage and projection images.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened by externally bonded reinforcement often fail by debonding. This paper presents an experimental and analytical study aimed at better understanding and modeling the fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) debonding failures in strengthened RC beams under monotonic and cyclic loads. In order to investigate the flexural behavior and failure modes of FRP-strengthened beams under monotonic and cyclic loadings, an experimental program was carried out. An analytical study based on the energy balance of the system was also performed. It considers the dominant mechanisms of energy dissipation during debonding and predicts the failure load of the strengthened beams. Validation of the model was carried out using test data obtained from the own experimental investigation.

  • Semi-greenhouse type solar-dehumidification drying of oak was carried out to investigate the possibility to dry wood using solar energy in Korea. The energy balance equation was set up, considering all the energy requirements, and the solar radiation was calculated to analyze the efficiencies of solar dryer with and without the dehumidifier. The average temperature inside dryer and collector rose up to $52^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$, respectively. The average daily total beam, diffuse, and ground-reflected radiations were 7.27MJ, 8.70MJ, and 0.33MJ on the roof and 2.08MJ, 4.84MJ, and 5.37MJ on the south wall collector, respectively. Heat efficiency of solar dryer was 14.04% with dehumidifier and 13.13% without dehumidifier. The energy required to remove 1g of water from wood was 0.0289MJ/g in solar-dehumidification drying and 0.0310 MJ/g in semi-greenhouse type solar drying.

  • This study examined the effects of different interaction styles, that is, interaction with an object and interaction with an adult, on young children's cognitive level. Subjects were 150 5-year-old children. The task required children to predict the working of a mathematical balance beam. Seven cognitive levels were identified based on the logic of prediction. Data were analyzed by t-test, F-test, Duncan Test and Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Test. Results showed that both interaction styles caused improvement in children's cognitive level, but when interaction with an adult was divided into two categories, i.e., interaction with the higher group and interaction with the lower group, the latter experienced decline in cognitive level. Regardless of sex, interactions within the Zone of Proximal Development and with the object were found to be effective methods for children's cognitive improvement.
