  • B13 analogues are being considered as therapeutic agents for cancer cells, since B13 is a ceramide analogue and inhibits ceramidase to promote apoptosis in cancer cells. B13 sulfonamides are assumed to have biological activity similar to B13, since they are made by bioisosterically substituting the carboxyl moiety of B13 with sulfone group. Twenty B13 sulfonamides were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxicities against human colon cancer HT-29 and lung cancer A549 cell lines using MTT assays. Replacement of the amide group with a sulfonamide group increased cytotoxicity in both cancer cell lines. The sulfonamides with long alkyl chains exhibited activities two to three times more potent than that of B13 and compound (15) had the most potent activity with $IC_{50}$ values of 27 and $28.7{\mu}M$ for HT-29 and A549, respectively. The comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) were used to carry out QSAR molecular modeling of these compounds. The predictive CoMSIA models for HT-29 and A549 gave cross-validated q2 values of 0.703 and 0.830, respectively. From graphical analysis of these models, we suppose that the stereochemistry of 1,3-propandiol is not important for activity and that introduction of a sulfonamide group and long alkyl chains into B13 can increase cytotoxicity.

  • Two different window-structured $CuInGaSe_2$(CIGS) solar cells, i.e., CIGS/thin-CdS/ZnO:B(sample A) and CIGS/very thin-CdS/Zn(S/O)/ZnO:B(sample B), were prepared, and the diffusivity of Zn, Cd, S, and B atoms, respectively, in the CIGS, ZnO or Zn(S/O) layer was estimated by a theoretical fit to experimental secondary ion mass spectrometer data. Diffusivities of Zn, Cd, S, and B atoms in CIGS were $2.0{\times}10^{-13}(1.5{\times}10^{-13})$, $4.6{\times}10^{-13}(4.4{\times}10^{-13})$, $1.6{\times}10^{-13}(1.8{\times}10^{-13})$, and $1.2{\times}10^{-12}cm^2/s$ at 423K, respectively, where the values in parentheses were obtained from sample B and the others from sample A. The diffusivity of the B atom in a Zn(S/O) of sample B was $2.1{\times}10^{-14}cm^2/sec$. Moreover, the diffusivities of Cd and S atoms diffusing back into ZnO(sample A) or Zn(S/O)(sample A) layers were extremely low at 423K, and the estimated diffusion coefficients were $2.2{\times}10^{-15}cm^2/s$ for Cd and $3.0{\times}10^{-15}cm^2/s$ for S.

  • Experiments were performed on mice to investigate the effect of methionine diets (MET) on the immunotoxicity of ethanol. ICR female mice were divided into 5 groups, Met (Basal (B)+0.19% methionine(M), B+1.71% M and B+5.13%W) and ethanol(4%) were administered ad libitum for 21 days. The mice were evaluated for changes in immune status as measured by antibody titer, Arthus reaction, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), rosette forming cell(RFC) and plaque forming cell (PFC) to sheep red blood cells (S-RBC). To investigate the change of the non-specific immune response, the number of leukocytes in peripheral blood and phagocyte activity were measured. The results were summarized as follows: (1) The weight ratios of spleen and thymus to body weight were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M, B+0.57% M and B+1.71% M groups in comparison with control group(B), but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (2) Humoral immune responses were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M and B+0.57% M groups in comparison with control group, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (3) Cellular immune responses were significantly decreased by the B+1.71% M and B+5.13% M groups in comparison with control group. (4) Phagocyte activities were significantly increased by the B+0.19% M, B+0.57% M and B+1.71% M groups in comparison with control groups, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased. (5) The number of circulating leukocyte was significantly increased in the B+0.19% M and B+0.57% M groups in comparison with control group, but B+5.13% M group was significantly decreased.

  • In order to synthesize a new antibacterial and antitumor agents, we have prepared new analogues pteroic acid(13a, 13b), which means C-9 position of pteroic acid has been replaced by norfloxacin(8) or ciprofloxacin(9) and amino group of C-2 position by $CH_3$. These derivatives were synthesized coupling at N-4 piperazine of norfloxacin and ciprofloxacin with 2-amino-3-cyano-5-chloromethylpyrazine(20) provided 1-alkyl(ethyl, cyclopropyl)-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-4-oxo-7-[[4-N-(2-amino-3-cyanopyrazin-5-yl)methyl]piperazin-1-yl]-3-quinoline-carboxylic acid(12a, 12b). It was then cyclized with acetamidine. HCI to obtain new analogues of C-2 desaminomethylpteroic acid(13a, 13b) in yield of 76.2% and 82.8 % respectively. These compounds were tested in vitro on antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC9027. In general, these synthesized compounds(13a, 13b) showed less potent activities than those of norfloxacin.

  • The magnetoelectric characteristics on layered $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT$ and $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT/Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9$($t_m=0.017$, 0.034mm) composites by epoxy bonding for magnetic field sensor were investigated in the low-frequency range and resonance frequency range. The optimal bias magnetic field $H_{dc}$ of these samples was about 23~63 Oe range. The Me coefficient of $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9/PZT/Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_9(t_m=0.034mm)$ composites reaches a maximum of $186mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=63Oe$, f=50 Hz and a maximum of $1280mV/cm{\cdot}Oe$ at $H_{dc}=63Oe$, resonance frequency $f_r=95.5KHz$. The output voltage shows linearity proportional to ac fields $H_{ac}$ and is about U=0~130.6 mV at $H_{ac}=0{\sim}7Oe$, f=50 Hz, U=0~12.4 V at $H_{ac}=0{\sim}10Oe$, $f_r=95.5KHz$(resonance frequency). The optimal frequency(f=50 Hz) of this sample is around the utility ac frequency(f=60 Hz). Therefore, this sample will allow for ac magnetic field sensor at utility frequency and low bias magnetic fields $H_{dc}$.

  • Crystallization and embrittlement of $Fe_{78}B_{13}Si_{9}$ amorphous alloy was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The crystallization comprizes two exothermic processes. In the first crystallization stage, $\alpha$-(Fe, Si) dendrites are formed from the amorphous state, and in the second crystallization, $Fe_2B$ compounds are formed. An abrupt decrease of the fracture strain of the ribbon started from amorphous started annealed at about $340^{\circ}C$
