  • The problem of fitting B-spline curves to planar point clouds is studied in this paper. A novel method is proposed to deal with the most challenging case where multiple intersecting curves or curves with self-intersection are necessary for shape representation. A method based on Delauney Triangulation of data points is developed to identify connected components which is also capable of removing outliers. A skeleton representation is utilized to represent the topological structure which is further used to create a weighted graph for deciding the merging of curve segments. Different to existing approaches which utilize local shape information near intersections, our method considers shape characteristics of curve segments in a larger scope and is thus capable of giving more satisfactory results. By fitting each group of data points with a B-spline curve, we solve the problems of curve structure reconstruction from point clouds, as well as the vectorization of simple line drawing images by drawing lines reconstruction.

  • From the viewpoint of general recognition system, B-spline is introduced for the approximation and recognition of human profile contours. Profile contour is approximated to the cublic B-spline curve by least square fitting so that B-Spline nodes nearly correspond with the curvature extrema of the contour. This method is designed for the spline to be good features in recognition, and also showed good approximation compared with the variants of B-spline appraximation.

  • A laser scanner is widely used fur a device fur acquiring point data in reverse engineering. It is more efficient to generate a surface automatically from the line-typed data than scattered data of points clouds. In the case of a compound model, it is hard to represent all the scanned data into one surface maintaining its original line characteristics. In this paper, a method is presented to generate a surface by the segmentation of measured point data. After forming triangular net, the segmentation is done by the user input such as the angle between triangles, the number of facets to be considered as small segment, and the angle for combining small segment. B-spline fitting is implemented to the point data in each segment. The surface generation through segmentation shows a reliable result when it is applied to the models with curvature deviation regions. An useful algorithm for surface reconstruction is developed and verified by applying an practical model and shows a good tools fur reverse engineering in design modification.

  • Ship hullform is usually designed with a curve network, and smooth hullform surfaces are supposed to be generated by filling in (or interpolating) the curve network with appropriate surface patches. Tensor-product surfaces such as B-spline and $B\'{e}zier$ patches are typical representations to this interpolating problem. However, they have difficulties in representing the surfaces of irregular topological type which are frequently appeared in the fore- and after-body of ship hullform curve network. In this paper, we proposed a method that can automatically generate discrete $G^1$ continuous B-spline surfaces interpolating given curve network of ship hullform. This method consists of three steps. In the first step, given curve network is reorganized to be of two types: boundary curves and reference curves of surface patches. Especially, the boundary curves are specified for their surface patches to be rectangular or triangular topological type that can be represented with tensor-product (or degenerate) B-spline surface patches. In the second step, surface fitting points and cross boundary derivatives are estimated by constructing virtual iso-parametric curves at discrete parameters. In the last step, discrete $G^1$ continuous B-spline surfaces are generated by surface fitting algorithm. Finally, several examples of resulting smooth hullform surfaces generated from the curve network data of actual ship hullform are included to demonstrate the quality of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the process generating a SAC(Sectional Area Cure) by using ASMOD(Adaptive Spline Modeling of Observation Data). That is, we define SACs of real ships as B-spline curves by a hybrid cure approximation(which is the combination method of a B-spline fitting method and a genetic algorithm) and accumulate a database of control points. Then we let ASMOD learn from the correlation principal dimensions with control points.

  • Color segmentation takes great attentions since a color is an effective and robust visual cue for characterizing one object from other objects. Color segmentation is, however, suffered from color variation induced from irregular illumination changes. This paper proposes a reliable color modeling approach in HSI (Hue-Saturation-Intensity) rotor space considering intensity information by adopting B-spline curve fitting to make a mathematical model for statistical characteristics of a color with respect to brightness. It is based on the fact that color distribution of a single-colored object is not invariant with respect to brightness variations even in HS (Hue-Saturation) plane. The proposed approach is applied for the segmentation of human skin areas successfully under various illumination conditions.

  • Generation of optimum planar B-spline curve in terms of minimum deviation and required fairness to approximate a target shape defined by a strip-shaped unorganized 2D point cloud is studied. It is proposed to use the location of control points as variables within the geometric optimization framework of point distance minimization. An adaptive simulated annealing heuristic optimization algorithm is developed to iteratively update an initial approximate curve towards the target shape. The new implementation comprises an adaptive cooling procedure in which the temperature change is adaptively dependent on the objective function evolution. It is shown that the proposed method results in an improved convergence speed when compared to the standard simulated annealing method. A couple of examples are included to show the applicability of the proposed method in the surface model reconstruction directly from point cloud data.

  • BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) is critical in realistic simulation of material appearances since it models the directional characteristics of reflection of light. Although many BRDF models have been proposed so far, it is still not easy to find one specific model that could represent all the reflection properties of real materials such as generalized diffusion, off-specular reflection, Fresnel effect, and back scattering. In this paper, we compare three BRDF models including B-spline volume BRDF (BVB), Cook-Torrance, and Lafortune in their ability to represent the measured BRDF data for physically-based rendering. We show that B-spline volume BRDF surpass the others in quality of data fitting and rendering, especially for materials without specular reflections.
