  • In this study, an automated ultrasonic testing system and post signal and image processing techniques are developed in order to construct ultrasonic flaw images in weldments. Image processing algorithms are built into the flaw image processing system for the automated ultrasonic testing system. The developed signal and image analysis algorithms addressed in this study include an A-Scan data compression algorithm, ultrasonic image amplification algorithm and B-scan flaw image correction algorithm(SAFT). This flaw image processing system for the automated ultrasonic testing system can be applied to various inspection fields.

  • If the ambient temperature rises in AC PDP, some of the discharged cells arc turned off because of the addressing failure. Particularly, the addressing failure at the last scan line is more serious than at the first scan line. The failure is accompanied with delay of the address discharge and reduction of total charge involved. In order to compensate this kind of misfiling, the progressively increasing address voltage waveform is used instead of constant one. In this method, we found that the total charge and address time at the last scan line are similar to those of the first line. As a result, we can have stable discharge without misfiring even at the high ambient temperature.

  • If the ambient temperature rises for AC PDP, some of the discharge cells are turned off because of the misfiring during address period. Particularly, the misfiring of the 'last scan line is more serious than that of the first. In order to compensate the misfiring in such that case, different addressing voltage is applied at each cell such as progressively increasing pulse voltage instead of constant one. As a result, the addressing time and discharge charge of the last scan line have become similar to those of the first scan line and the phenomenon of misfiring has disappeared.

  • Compacted graphite iron 340 was carried out the heat treatment from 873 to 1,273 K. Compacted graphite iron 340 was evaluated relationship between the sound velocity, the attenuation coefficient and the tensile strength. The obtained results are as following. The signal strength of C scan images were weak according to increasing of heat treatment temperature and time. The amplitude of A scan and B scan was also low. This can be cause that the graphite was grown into the type of vermicular, and the many of grain boundary with ultrasound scattering were increase. The sound velocity was depend upon the heat treatment temperature and time, the attenuation coefficient had nothing to do with the temperature and time. The higher the heat treatment temperature, the tensile strength and the sound velocity were decreased. However, the tensile strength was proportional to the sound velocity. The higher tensile strength, the faster the sound velocity.

  • Terahertz waves (T-ray) was extensively studied for the NDE (nondestructive evaluation) of characterization of trailing edges for a use of turbines composed with composite materials. The used NDE system were consisted of both CW(Continuous wave) and TDS (Time domain spectroscopy). The FRP composites were utilized for two kinds of both trailing edges of wind energy (non-conducting polymeric composites) and carbon fiber composites with conducting properties. The signals of T-ray in the TDS (Time domain spectroscopy) mode resembles almost that of ultrasound waves; however, a terahertz pulse could not penetrate a material with conductivity unlike ultrasound. Also, a method was suggested to obtain the "n" in the materials, which is called the refractive index (n). The data of refractive index (n) could be solved for the trailing edges. The trailing edges were scanned for characterization and inspection. C-scan and B-scan images were obtained and best optimal NDE techniques were suggested for complicated geometry samples by terahertz radiation. Especially, it is found that the defect image of T-ray corresponded with defect locations for the trailing edges of wind mill.

  • The exhaustion of our water resource due to the leakage of waterworks renders it urgent to detect water leakage effectively. In the paper, the detection of water leakage makes use of a pound-penetrating radar(GPR). The region of water leakage is implemented by an acryl box filled with methanol, and then the scale-down experiments are performed by using the GPR system developed in our laboratory. The validity of GPR experiments is assured by showing that the measured data agree well with those finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) simulated results in the same situation. The feasibility of GPR system for the detection of water leakage is investigated by displaying B-scan images according to the distribution of water leakage.

  • Aspergillosis is an uncommon form of fungal infection of the central nervous system in immunocompetent patient, especially those involving the pituitary gland. Several cases of pituitary aspergillosis have been reported, but most of them are directly invaded from aspergillosis of sphenoid sinus. In the present case, a woman with primary pituitary aspergillosis had neither evidence of infection of the sphenoid sinus nor immunodeficiency. The patient underwent a transsphenoidal surgery for a presumed pituitary tumor. Histopathology demonstrated typical findings of aspergillosis. Postoperatively, amphotericin-B was administered and Gallium-67 scan was performed. We describe a case of primary pituitary aspergillosis mimicking pituitary tumor.

  • A general expression for the beam patterns of various synthetic aperture(SA) techniques was derived based on a unified SA model. This model was used to analyze and compare the performance of existing SA methods. Based on the theoretical studies, we propose a new synthetic aperture technique that is best suitable for the linear-scan imaging. The proposed method enables dynamic tow-way focusing in real imaging so that the B-mode image resolution can be greatly improved. Compared to the conventional focusing technique, the focused beam pattern by the proposed shows the mainlobe width reduced by half and comparable sidelobe levels. Computer simulation results demonstrated the validity of the theoretical analysis and the proposed SA method.

  • Directionally solidified Si films obtained via line-scan SLS can lead to attainment of high-mobility TFTs. The crystallographic texture of the resultant materials can potentially be an important factor because the spatial details thereof may impact the overall device uniformity. Here, we present EBSD analysis of these materials that reveal the existence of relatively large domains with different textures and differing amounts of defects, which in turn, may adversely affect device uniformity.

  • Two types of glycerolipids [monoacylglycerols (MAG) and cyclitols] were isolated by reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography from the methanol extracts of a marine sponge, and analyzed by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS) in positive-ion mode. FAB mass spectra of these compounds yielded protonated molecules $[M + H]^+$ and abundant sodiated molecules $[M + Na]^+$ from a mixture of 3-nitrobenzyl alcohol and NaI. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by FAB-collisional-induced dissociation (CID)-tandem mass spectrometry. We carried out collision-indused dissociation (CID) of these lipids in B/E-linked scan mode. The CID B/E-linked scan of $[M + H]^+$ and $[M + Na]^+$ precursor ions resulted in the formation of numerous characteristic product ions through a series of dissociative processes. The product ions formed by charge-remote fragmentation (CRF) provided important information for the identification of the acyl chain structure substituted at the glycerol backbone. Some of the product the ions were diagnostic for the presence of a glycerol backbone or acyl chain structure.
