  • Present work was carried out to investigate the influence of welded conditions, such as welding current, diameter of welding wire on the microstructural change and mechanical properties of TIG welded joint in AZ31B Mg alloy. It was found that good and sound welded joint was achieved in all welding conditions. The grain size decreased with increasing welding current and decreasing diameter of welding wire. Also, the second phases were homogeneously distributed in the grain and grain boundary as decreasing welding current and diameter of welding wire. The ${\beta}$ discontinuos precipitates were observed in the welded joint, but this microstructure has not been reported by previous researchs in AZ31B Mg alloy. The hardness value is affected by the existence state of the second phase and the hardness of the welded joint region is lower than the other regions in welded AZ31B Mg alloy. The strength of the welded joint region was influenced by the grain size and has more than 90%, compared to that of ASTM standard specification.

  • The present study investigated the adhesion and corrosion resistance of subsequent electrophoretic paint (E-paint) on "electroless" paint coated AZ31 Mg alloy, which was formed by immersion of AZ31 Mg alloy in E-painting solution. It was found that with increasing immersion time of AZ31 in E-painting solution, the amount of paint deposited by electroless process increased but it decreased the electrochemical equivalent of E-painting process and the adhesion of the subsequent E-paint layer. The E-paint on electroless paint coated AZ31 contained pores with the highest pore density and the largest pore size was obtained on the samples with electroless times of 2 and 5 minutes, respectively. Results of the salt-spray test showed an accelerated growth of blisters over the entire surface of the sample immersed for less than 5 minutes whereas blisters were observed only in the vicinity of the scratch in case of samples treated for 15 and 30 minutes. The E-paint on AZ31 with shorter electroless immersion time in E-painting solution was found to have good adhesion and better corrosion resistance.

  • NeQuick G is the ionosphere model utilized by Galileo single-frequency users to estimate the ionospheric delay on each user-satellite link. The model is characterized by the effective ionization level (Az) index, determined by a modified dip latitude (MODIP) and broadcast coefficients derived from daily global space weather observations. However, globally fitted Az coefficients may not accurately represent ionosphere within local area. This study introduces a method for regional ionospheric modeling that searches for locally optimized Az coefficients. This approach involves fitting TEC output from NeQuick G to TEC data collected from GNSS stations around Korea under various ionospheric conditions including different seasons and both low and high solar activity phases. The optimized Az coefficients enable calculation of the Az index at any position within a region of interest, accounting for the spatial variability of the Az index in a polynomial function of MODIP. The results reveal reduced TEC estimation errors, particularly during high solar activity, with a maximum reduction in the RMS error by 85.95%. This indicates that the proposed method for NeQuick G can effectively model various ionospheric conditions in local areas, offering potential applications in GNSS performance analyses for local areas by generating various ionospheric scenarios.

  • A hot forming process is required for Mg alloys to enhance the formability and plastic workability due to the insufficient formability at room temperature. Mg alloy undergoes dynamic recrystallization (DRX) during the hot working process, which is a restoration or softening mechanism that reduces the dislocation density and releases the accumulated energy to facilitate plastic deformation. The flow stress curve shows three stages of complicated strain hardening and softening phenomena. As the strain increases, the stress also increases due to work hardening, and it abruptly decreases work softening by dynamic recrystallization. It then maintains a steady-state region due to the equilibrium between the work hardening and softening. In this paper, an efficient optimization process is proposed for the material model of the dynamic recrystallization to improve the accuracy of the flow curve. A total of 18 variables of the constitutive equation of AZ80 alloy were systematically optimized at an elevated forming temperature($300^{\circ}C$) with various strain rates(0.001, 0.1, 1, 10/sec). The proposed method was validated by applying it to the constitutive equation of AZ61 alloy.

  • With the increasing demand for lightweight materials to reduce fuel consumption, especially in the transportation industry, magnesium alloys are being widely studied. However, there are several limitations to the large-scale application of magnesium alloys in a structure because of their low formability and strong anisotropy. In order to take into account both the strong anisotropy and tension-compression asymmetry of AZ31 sheet alloy, the Cazacu-Plunkett-Barlat yield criterion (Cazacu, 2006) was adopted in material modeling. The variation of the anisotropic coefficients that describe the yield surface evolution of AZ31 is optimized using an interpolation function based on specific calibration results. It generates continuous yield surfaces, which makes it possible to describe different hardening rates in tension and compression as well as the tension-compression asymmetry of magnesium alloys. The performance of the CPB06 yield criterion for simulating an axial crushing test was tested and compared with that of the Hill (1948) yield criterion.

  • In this work, anodic oxidation behavior of AZ31 Mg alloy was studied as a function of $Na_2CO_3$ concentration in electrolyte by voltage-time curves and observation of surface appearances and morphologies after the anodic treatments, using optical microscopy and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM). The voltage-time curves of AZ31 Mg alloy surface and surface appearances after the anodic treatments showed three different regions with $Na_2CO_3$ concentration : region I, below 0.2 M $Na_2CO_3$ where shiny surface with a number of small size pits; region II, between 0.4 M and 0.6 M $Na_2CO_3$ where dark surface with relatively low number of large size burned or dark spots; region III, more than 0.8 M $Na_2CO_3$ where bright surface with or without large size dark spots were obtained. The anodically treated AZ31 Mg alloy surface became significantly brightened with increasing $Na_2CO_3$ concentration from 0.5 M to 0.8 M which was attribute to the formation of denser and smoother surface films. Pits and porous protruding reaction products were found at relatively large size and small size spots, respectively, on the AZ31 Mg alloy surface in low concentration of $Na_2CO_3$ less than 0.2 M. The formation of pits is attributed to the result of repetition of the formation and detachment of porous anodic reaction products. Based on the experimental results obtained in this work, it is concluded that more uniform, denser and smoother surface of AZ31 Mg alloy could be obtained at more than 0.8 M $Na_2CO_3$ concentration if there is no other oxide forming agent.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the weathering durability of waterborne preservative (AAC, ACQ, CCA, CuAz) treated Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora S. et Z.) sapwood samples by accelerated weathering, and to find out the factor of stability. When considered the color changes, weight losses, surface degradation, and microstructure changes due to weathering, ACQ-, CCA-, and CuAz-treated samples were durable against weathering; the weathering durability of AAC-treated samples was poor and similar to untreated controls. The lignin content in aqueous extracts collected from ACQ-, CCA-, and CuAz-treated samples during weathering was lower than that from untreated and AAC-treated ones. From these findings, we might concluded that weathering durability of ACQ-, CCA-, and CuAz-treated samples was enhanced by the fixation of preservative component(s) onto the lignin structure, which is very susceptible to weathering.

  • In this study, the welding characteristics of friction stir welding were investigated in accordance with the tool plunge position and cooling to the base materials for the joining of dissimilar materials (A6005-AZ61). Other different welding conditions, such as the tool rotation speed and welding speed, were fixed to 500rpm-30mm/min, respectively, and welding was then carried out by placing the Mg alloy (AZ61) on the advancing side and Al alloy(A6005) on the retreating side. Welding was conducted under six different conditions. To investigate the welding characteristic, tensile test and microstructure observations using an optical microscope were carried out. As the tensile test result, the maximum strength appeared under the condition in which the tool is moved 1 mm to the Mg alloy direction and cooling to the base materials. Under the same welding conditions, the strength with cooling was approximately two times higher than that without cooling. The tool was located in each direction of 1.7 mm from the weld line. Therefore, in the excessive off-set of tool position, the welding integrity was in an extremely poor condition due to the lack of stirring. This study was confirmed by the A6005-AZ61 dissimilar friction stir welding the welding speed and the tool rotation speed. In addition, the temperature control and tool plunge position are important welding parameters.
