  • Due to the structural complexity, the response of a flexible riser under axisymmetric loads is quite difficult to determine. Based on equilibrium conditions, geometrical relations and constitutive equations, an analytical model that can accurately predict the axisymmetric behavior of flexible risers is deduced in this paper. Since the mutual exclusion between the contact pressure and interlayer gap is considered in this model, the influence of the load direction on the structural behavior can be analyzed. Meanwhile, a detailed finite element analysis for unbonded flexible risers is conducted. Based on the analytical and numerical models, the structural response of a typical flexible riser under tension, torsion, internal and outer pressure has been studied in detail. The results are compared with experimental data obtained from the literature, and good agreement is found. Studies have shown that the proposed analytical and numerical models can provide an insightful reference for analysis and design of flexible risers.

  • This paper introduces a BEM/RANS interactive scheme to predict the contra-rotating propeller (CRP) performance. In this scheme, the forward propeller and the aft propeller are handled by two separate BEM models while the interactions between them are achieved by coupling them with a RANS solver. By using the body force field and mass source field to represent the propeller in the RANS model, the number of RANS cells and the number of required RANS iterations reduce significantly. The method provides an efficient way to predict the effective wake, the steady/unsteady propeller forces, etc. The BEM/RANS interactive scheme is first applied to a CRP in both an axisymmetric manner and a non-axisymmetric manner. Results are shown in good agreement with the experimental data in moderate to high advance ratios. It is proved that the difference between the axisymmetric scheme and the non-axisymmetric scheme mainly comes from the non-axisymmetric bodies. It is also found that the error is larger at lower advance ratios. Possible explanations are given. Finally, some additional cases are tested which justifies that the non-axisymmetric BEM/RANS scheme is able to handle a podded CRP working at given inclination angles.

  • In this paper, the algorithm for the static analysis of an axisymmetric cylindrical shell by using the finite element-transfer stiffness coefficient method (FE-TSCM) is suggested. TE-TSCM combining both the modeling procedure of the finite element method (FEM) and the transfer procedure of the transfer stiffness coefficient method (TSCM) has the advantages of FEM and TSCM. After computational programs are made by both FE-TSCM and FEM for the stress analysis of the axisymmetric cylindrical shell, we compare the numerical results by FE-TSCM with those of FEM for two computational models in order to confirm the trust of FE-TSCM.

  • Generalized hydrodynamic (GH) theory for multi-species gas and the computational models are developed for the numerical simulation of hypersonic rarefied gas flow on the basis of Eu's GH theory. The rotational non-equilibrium effect of diatomic molecules is taken into account by introducing excess normal stress associated with the bulk viscosity. The numerical model for the diatomic GH theory is developed and tested. Moreover, with the experience of developing the dia-tomic GH computational model, the GH theory is extended to a multi-species gas including 5 species; O$_2$, N$_2$, NO, O, N. The multi-species GH model includes diffusion relation due to the molecular collision and thermal phenomena. Two kinds of GH models are developed for an axisymmetric flow solver. By compar-ing the computed results of diatomic and multi-species GH theories with those of the Navier-Stokes equations and the DSMC results, the accuracy and physical consistency of the GH computational models are examined.

  • In this study, the performances of various turbulence closure models are evaluated in the calculation of a transonic flow over axisymmetric bump. k-$\varepsilon$, explicit algebraic stress, and two Reynolds stress models, i.e., GL model proposed by Gibson & Launder and SSG model proposed by Speziale, Sarkar and Gatski, are chosen as turbulence closure models. SSG Reynolds stress model gives best predictions for pressure coefficients and the location of shock. The results with GL model also show quite accurate prediction of pressure coefficients down-stream of shock wave. However, in the predictions of mean velocities and turbulent stresses, the results are not so satisfactory as in the prediction of pressure coefficients.

  • The objective of this study is to predict the drag of an axisymmetric underwater vehicle with bluff afterbody using CFD. FLUENT, commercial CFD code, is used to simulate high Reynolds number turbulent flows around the vehicle. The computed drag coefficients are compared to available experimental data at various Reynolds numbers. Four widely used two-equation turbulence models are investigated to evaluate their performance of predicting the anisotropic turbulence in a recirculating flow region, which is caused by flow separation arising from the base of the vehicle. The simulations with Realizable ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and ${\kappa}-{\omega}$ SST turbulence models predict the anisotropic turbulent flows comparatively well and the drag prediction results with those models show good agreements with the experimental data.

  • The present study mainly focuses on the inelastic stress analysis of the 1/4 scale prestressed concrete containment vessel model(PCCV) under internal pressure and evaluates not only failure mode but also ultimate pressure capacity of the PCCV. Inelastic analysis is carried out 2D axisymmertic FE model and 3D FE model using four concrete material models which are Drucker-Prager Model, Chen-Chen Model, Damaged Plasticity Model and Menetrey-Willam Model. The uplift phenomenon of the basemat is considered in the 2D axisymmetric FE models. It is found from the 2D axisymmetric analysis results that both of Drucker-Prager model and Damaged Plasticity Model have a good performance and the uplift of the basemat is too small to influence on the global behavior of the PCCV. The FE analysis results on the ultimate pressure and failure mode have a good agreement with experimental results.

  • An elastic model is developed to predict the average thermal residual stresses in the matrix and fiber of a misoriented short fiber composite. The thermal residual stresses are induced by the mismatch in the coefficient of the thermal expansion of the matrix and fiber when the composite is subjected to a uniform temperature change. The model considers two special cases of fiber misorientation ; two-dimensional in-plane and three-dimensional axisymmetric. The analytical formulation of the model is based on Eshelby's equivalent inclusion method and is nuque in that it is able to account for interactions among fibers. The model is more general than past models and it is able to treat prior analyses of the simpler composite systems as extram cases. The present model is to investigate the effects of fiber volume fraction, distribution type, distribution cut-off angle, and aspect ratio on thermal residual stress for both in-plane and axisymmetric fiber misorientation. Fiber volum fraction, aspect ratio, and disturbution cut-off angle are shown to have more significant effects on the magnitude of the thermal residual stress than fiber distrubution type for both in-plane and axisymmetric misorientation.
